As a Greek, I'd say that I tolerate our Athenian sun much easier than I tolerate the summer in, say Bulgaria or Romania. 35 C in Bulgaria is like 45 in Athens with added 90% humidity. So basically you are in Florida. Mosquitos are as big as toddlers.

I’m Greek and the thing with the food always annoys me. So many ignorant tourists always ordering greek salad and musaka everyday during their holidays refusing to explore local cuisine. Plus many of them seem to choose the worst places to eat especially in the islands (maybe because they’re cheaper). As for coffee, Americans seem to be addicted to Starbucks crap, they can’t comprehend how real coffee tastes, I always love their looks when they taste coffee here, it’s like they’re having a revelation! I always like to show people how we do things here. Thank you for choosing our country to live in, you are a very kind gentleman.

But tourists are not obliged to know all the variety of food we have here in Greece, same as for us when we go abroad. You try something and then if you like it you stick to it. Besides everyone does what he likes with his money. Nothing wrong with that !

Actually it is the Greeks themselves that are the most narrow-minded people in the world when it comes to food. For the average Greek, ALL foreign dishes are crap and trusts only his mother's food (awful in most of the cases, bad techniques and the ingredients are swimming in oil...). And even when they go to a Greek taverna, they will always order the same boring dishes, i.e. fries (as if sth will happen to Greeks if they do not order fries every day), spaghetti, souvlaki, chicken, and that terrible dish called Pastitsio! So it is funny to call the tourists ignorant, at least they travel to other countries and taste different recipes, Greeks do not even travel outside Greece, they only know their souvlaki and gyros.

What's funny is that freddo is an Italian word meaning cold. However there is no freddo espresso in Italy, it's a Greek invention. The way to make freddo espresso is this: - Use your espresso machine to make a double shot espresso. - If you want to add sugar add now because once the coffee is cold the sugar will not disolve. - Using a very sturdy mixer, mix the coffee together with a couple of ice cubes. Some people don't use ice cubes at this point as cheaper mixers may break but the coffee shops do because it makes the coffee get cold much faster. - Fill a tall glass with ice cubes and pour the coffee. - If you want to make freddo cappuchino instead, add wipped cream at the top.

You're very very informative and as a British person I am so glad that you talk of being mindful and experiencing the culture of the people there....and I find it of utmost importance especially if British to ALWAYS learn some words and sentences of the countries we visit....I always find it extremely rude to expect everyone to speak English. Whenever we have travelled abroad we always practice manners as a family because I really don't want anyone to think that all British are the same, drinking, causing havoc and being rude, we must respect the people of that country who are welcoming us into their homeland and I have always found Greek people to be so friendly and welcoming.

Small businesses keep the afternoon break, but big shops work all day, because today there's air-conditioning and they have rotating shifts. For example a small shop for clothes works 09:00-03:00 Monday Wednesday Saturday, and 09:00-02:00, 17:00-20:00 Tuesday Thursday. A supermarket works 08:00-21:00 weekdays and 08:00-20:00 Saturday. The tap water can be either very good or very bad depending on the region, so ask the locals whether to drink or not. Athens water comes from rivers on the mountains so it's even better than bottled water, but water in the islands comes with water container ships from the mainland, so it's filthy and only good for washing.

About the water, that depends on the island. Here on Rhodes according to where on the island you are you can have clean drinking water, like e.g. in Rhodes town, because it's from the mountains. Smaller islands here get their water from a ship with a desalination equipment.

Please don't go to a rural greek Hotel and ask for a "flat white " coffee and then not be able to tell the person serving you what it is! Definitely agree about sensible shoes. The greeks are the loveliest people and so friendly. Relax, enjoy and go with the flow. If you order something and they get it wrong just try it and it may be better than what you actually ordered. Great tips. Thank you xx

Another great Video! Now, you have to excuse me for this but...when you say "number 5" you have to talk about what gestures are considered rude/inapropriate in greece(maybe a topic for another video?), and you did one right there...Common misconception for foreigners when showing the number 5, we always show with the palm facing ourselves, and the back of the hand towards the other person, otherwise the open palm of five fingers towards the other person is called a mountza (μούντζα/φάσκελο). This was a great video with good advice. A couple of years ago, I took the whole family (ex-spouse and 4 young adult kids) on an epic 2 week trip to Greece. Best ever. We visited Athens, Santorini, Rhodes. All wonderful. But our favorite was Nafplio. That walk from Nafplio to Karathona beach is an adventure in itself. It was early in the season; nonetheless we enjoyed the sun loungers at Outopia, and the beautiful cristal clear waters. Looking at the online reviews, Outopia is not universally appreciated, but we thought it was very good and enjoyed good service and good food (and free loungers :-) Just go, you won't regret it.

Very very spot on. Your advice is perfect. That with throwing toilet paper it really depends. Constructions built after the 1970s have no issues. But really old constructions 1960s and earlier may have issues. And because you never know, be careful, look around for signs, if you see no little basket, then you can throw the toilet paper in the toilet. Never in boats. If you visit a breakfast place in the islands you will find delicious pancakes. But there are other more interesting things to try. Sometimes local sausages or pies. And even eggs you will taste in Greece they are actually so delicious you won't believe the difference in quality and flavor.

You should also wear light colours, keep the dark ones for the night. Not even a dark hat is appropriate, you risk a sunstroke. Prefer wide-brimmed hats because they offer better protection. Don't walk around shirtless. It's better to wear even long sleeves or trousers because that's cooler than getting the sun straight on your skin. Prefer linen or cotton. Avoid tight clothes, it's so uncomfortable. As for water, the moment you arrive at a place, ask. There are several places where tap water is perfectly safe. As you mentioned in the video, respect the siesta and enjoy it yourself. It's so hot and you need it. Don't spend it on the beach, it's dangerous. Get some shady place, enjoy a light snack, no alcohol, get an icecream, some juice and relax. As for the food, you're so right. The variety of dishes is so interesting, don't stick to the usual stuff.

The quiet hours apply in many countries, not just Greece. Source: been there, done that. (although, here in Athens, even a fart can trigger a Karen across the balcony with the 2 most common words you'd hear from them: Ησυχία παρακαλώ!!!)

Greece is very expensive. I am from the USA. I found Athens and Paros surprisingly very expensive. Gyro is $14 like in NYC. That being said I absolutely loved Athens and Paros. Athens is one of my favorite cities ever.

@@Mongoose-ct6us I dont Know what you ate but it was not a gyros. Gyros is $ 3,8 in most cases , $5 is considered to be too expensive for us Greeks we would never eat at that restaurant. If you go to Mykonos or Santorini or a super expencive restaurant , maybe . But not in an every day restaurant.

Fredo Espresso is not just cold Espresso where I buy it from, and I've been buying it from the same spot since I was allowed to drink coffee. It's so much more than that. It has normal milk being whisked with ice to produce foam, which is nothing like whipped cream. I top it with cinnamon and lots of ice. Very few places make good freddo espresso, sadly. Most places treat it just like a frappe but with espresso, and that's wrong.

I’ve been traveling all over since 1970, have been to Greece a couple of times, but was last there 20 years ago. I understand and practice all of what you say, BUT you mean to tell me that in Napflio one can’t find a “caffè Americano”…coffee and water, and maybe a little milk/cream? I’m going to be staying there this fall for a month during Oct/Nov.
@ourlifeinnafplio
@ourlifeinnafplio 7 ай бұрын
Of course, you can find coffee with water, but it is called 'filtered coffee' and you can also ask to put milk in your coffee, too. The best thing is to look at the menu of the coffee place you visit and order accordingly. If you are not sure, then ask and I am sure they'll be happy to help you choose.

Regarding coffee, which for coffee drinkers like myself is essential, you should look into how we Greeks refer to " imported" types of coffees. So americano means nothing to Greeks, it is filtered coffee (from a pot or individual pot they bring to your table and you pour it after two three minutes when it sets) or "french" coffee. If you prefer expresso it is single or double shot not "lougo" (if I m spelling it correctly)like Italians say it. Macchiato in the italian sense does not exist (only the starbucks type). Freddo cappucino is iced expresso coffee (that has been brewed and put ice into to cool it down with milk foam and if you ask for it ground cinnamon sprinked on it. Frappe is very strong if you have heart issues probably avoid it. And everything,except Greek coffee, have a decaf version. Just do a little research you ll find good coffee in Greece.

@Montragon29

They are. I am originally from Volos but grew up in Thessaloniki and i;ve visited Nafplio many times. Basically any city that is built around a sea harbor has a more summer vibe. Also access to seafronts offer serene afternoon walks and some real nice sunset views....Some others equally beautiful are Kavala, Preveza, Kalamata, Galaxidi and many more. Also Lefkada which although it may seem like an island is actually connected by a land mass with the continental Greece. (my work involves a lot of travelling and i've been in most parts of greece)

No 8! When watching a vlog where young Americans go to a Lebanese place as a part of an Athens food tour, or they refer to gyros' pitta as "falafel" or to pastitsio as "Greek lasagna" I immediately stop watching. At least have respect! You paid a small fortune to visit Greece, why don't you learn the basics! Once I saw a girl buying a croissant as part of a food tour of Greek food. Lord have mercy 😂 Watching from Cyprus. Love your attitude and point of view in all your videos ❤👍
