Hi guys, welcome back to another episode.
Today let's talk about fines. Driving fines, that is.
Driving in Italy has been one of the things we have enjoyed the most during our time here.
Being able to just decide in the spare of the moment where to go, knowing that almost any choice is the right choice has been a dream come true for Aden and I.
Since we have been here, we have had rental cars for many months which was a very expensive exercise (I made a video about it and I will link it on the description), but for the last 4 to 5 months we have had our own car.
Having our own car has given us so much freedom, as we purchased precisely the type of car that fits our needs, since we live on a hilltop town, and considering that we have a large dog, and a cat that needs to travel in a crate.
It has been a blessing, and in a way a luxury to be able to look at the weather, check accommodation online, book it, pack and drive to discover a new place.
But having our car hasn't all been fun and games...
I hope you enjoy today's video.

I love watching your content, keeps me dreaming to move to Italy. About the fines, i've gotten my share of fines in Italy, one in Positano Italy and one in Maiori Italy, I paid one via the post office in Amalfi and one at the commune of Positano since we where staying there anyways. When you are a tourist and you dont' have much time, you just do what needs to be done ASAP and just let it be part of your expense. I am sure I will be looking back to this video at one point if I get to move to Italy, to check out the website your recommended for parking. Again, thank you for sharing, I love your content.

Thanks Christine. As they only give you 5 days at the discounted rate, that kind of puts tourists and residents on the some boat and I feel that it pushes us to just pay without even knowing. In Australia, if I remember correctly, they give you 20 or 30 days, so that at least if you feel like contesting you can do something about it. PS. I just bought some Fior Di Latte cheese yesterday from the man with the van 😋

Thank you very much for this info. I will visit Rome and Florence this spring and my family and I we were thinking to rent a car in Florence to drive around the hill towns in Tuscany and continuo to Venice. After I watch this video, I think it’s not such a good idea.

Hi Claudia, please don't be discouraged. Having a car will give you guys so much freedom, but if you're going to very touristy areas, be sure you look at the website I showed in advance so that you know whether it's worth it. Thanks for watching and hope you have lots of fun on your trip ☀️🛵

Was it by camera that they saw you enter the restricted zone in Galatina? It would explain the hard stance since it would just be black or white by automation.

A big tip I can give you is: don't trust google maps in Italy 😂 you could get into a 'corsia preferenziale' (only for buses and taxi) or ZTL zone (traffic restricted area) without even knowing it! Cheers from Abruzzo 👋

Ciao Luca. That's scary. It makes me feel so nervous about going places. Google maps had made us stuff up so many times. Some people say Waze is better but we still can't fully trust it! Whereabouts in Abruzzo are you? 🛵☀️ Thanks for watching 😉

Ok! Where do I start? Galatina: I went to Puglia last week in September, first week in October of last year…. Visited many towns . Galatina was my very favorite place actually. Did not stay there just visited. But, I “had” to go back on a different occasion since there was a restaurant ( Il Fienile Ristorante ) I really enjoyed 2 days before. Anyhow, lovely city with great basilica with phenomenal frescos and amazing restaurant right in front of it. Highly recommend! The second time we had gone was on September 30th. We were going to find parking at the same place we did before ( coincidentally, I could actually see the parking spot in your video..under the trees right outside the centro storico) HOWEVER, this time all of the parking meters were covered with plastic bags😱😱😱 We were so puzzled by this to say at least! No signs. No explanation. No one to turn to for an explanation. And as we were looking around for a place to buy a ticket, there was another couple (American tourists in a rental car) asking us for help or as they did not want to get another parking fine. They had gotten one in Lecce the day before….So, we all left our cars there and prayed 🙏🙏🙏. Prayers worked. No ticket! 😅😅😅 Lastly, I would recommend getting in touch with Davide Mengoli from Salento With Love. He is based out of Galatina and has a decent following here on YB and Instagram. He maybe helpful as he seems to have a pull in Galatina. I don’t know him personally, but I had communicated with him briefly few times.

Hi Barbara. Thanks for your insights. We have also seen the parking meters covered in a few places without understanding and hoping for the best! We know of Davide and have watched quite a few of his videos. The Salento region of Puglia is becoming very popular these days ☀️🛵

What lovely countryside and beautiful towns and architecture! I enjoyed this vlog so much. As far as the fines…..YIKES! So, I assume there are cameras taking photos that catch your license plate and then they mail the fine to your home? I’ve never heard of that because where I live they have “meter maids” walking around placing fines right on the windshield of the car under the windshield wiper or the police pull you over and write a ticket. The tickets are $25. I used to love watching a t.v. show from Philadelphia and other Eastern United States cities where they would drive up and down streets aiming a gadget at license plates to catch cars with past due fines. They would then place a “boot” on the wheel of the car so that no one could drive it and a tow truck would come and drag it away. Funniest show on t.v. My thoughts for your situation: if a town wants tourists then they should make the fines much less. I received a fine from a cop in Reno, Nevada in 1986. I did EXACTLY what local drivers were doing but the cop only stopped me with an out-of-state license plate. That is called a tourist trap. I refuse to ever go to Reno again and have not. The same thing happened to me coming back over the border with Canada. It was another tourist trap according to the American Border Patrol and I have boycotted Canada ever since. I’ve probably been to Europe 15 times since then but I will never set foot in Canada even though it is only three hours away. The people I came across in Canada hated Americans and they were not shy about letting me know.

Hi VintageLPs. Tourist trap is a great way of explaining what some of these things are. These fines seem Soo expensive to me, considering the seriousness of the 'offense'. Quite frustrating! 😶

You don't make it clear whether you were detected by camera or traffic warden/vigile etc. If the camera caught your car then one would assume that they'd have sent you an image of the infraction.

These extortion tickets are the worst! I know - it’s Italy - but it has soured me on ever going back there - got a ticket for a no car zone on a Sunday in a town where our hotel was in that zone and i knew of no tiger option but to park. Italy sent me the ticket over and over to my house in the USA and then sold it to a collection agency - LOL - still never paid and will not go back so in the end the extortion racquet backfires

I cannot believe that they send you a ticket after the fact and months afterwards rather than at the time of the infraction . Is it too much trouble to put a ticket on or under your wind shield so at the least you know what you did wrong. My god that is ridiculous. They are definitely using this as a revenue source for the town and are intentionally discouraging people from owning a car.

Hi Peter, that's what we have thought. Months later, you can't even remember the circumstances clearly, so it feels very unfair! How about having to appeal by physically going to the Comune in question! We have heard about people that have received fines even a year later! Shocking

LOL ... not laughing at your experience, laughing because every year a few month after returning from Italy we receive notice from our rental car company that the government of Italy will be sending us a fine!!! We've had up to 3 fines each year!!! It's a complete rip off, as though the camera's are targeting tourists as a means of revenue. I laugh because it's so typical of the chaotic Italian government.
