Moving to and living in the Netherlands, there are so many things to love and do here! I can tell you that life in the Netherlands is great! Coming from Southern California and moving to Rotterdam, the quality of life here by far exceeds the quality life we were living in Southern California. Don't get me wrong, there are good thing to be said about So Cal... but none of them came with the peace of mind and the quality of life you get from living in the Netherlands. As you are about ready to see Dogs, Ducks and Family are just a few of them! When Tammy and I became expats in the Netherlands we never dreamed that a life in the Netherlands could be so simple and satisfying.

The hand on back is primarily so that the child feels safe and protected and for safety reasons, so they can keep their balance better, also so that the children can be pushed a little, and also so that they can be grabbed immediately in an emergency situation, because many cyclists around them are often a bit reckless, it can sometimes be busy, so that the child remains focused, and is not easily distracted by other cyclists, but learns to continue cycling calmly and not to pay attention to the chaos around them

I thought it was because on those little kid bikes they have to peddle a lot quicker to keep pace with the parent. So parents push a little when the kids get tired or the parent gets impatient.

Yes, a little help for the little legs, so they’re not exhausted when they arrive at their destination. A few months back my not little boy (16 now) pushed me up a hill 🤣. There comes a moment in time where the tables are turned!

And for safety. You help them along to keep up with the pace, because the wheels are smaller and they have less strength and to make sure they don't wonder of and end up under your bike or bump into the side curb or .... What I found amazing is the amount of stuff Dutch people can transport on their bikes. Kids, groceries, diy stuff. Everything! And they still end up in one piece at their destination. I have never got the hang of that. After a few ER visits I quit trying :-)

The bird is called a "kauw" (pronounced cow) It's indeed a member of the crow family. Btw the birds on the pictures you showed are geese. To be fair, it is incredibly heartwarming to see you enjoying these things, which at times are easily taken for granted. Speaking for myself, I thoroughly appreciate it so much more because of you and others for whom it is somewhat unusual at first. I think a lot of Dutch people do see our freedom, safety and actual luxury as normal, and on the other hand, we do live in times where we can expand our horizons digitally as well, so I hope we all learn to appreciate living here as much as you do. I've started following your videos for all your advises, and this one was really heart warming acknowledging that other person feel the same way that i do . I do think a lot of us aren't really aware how good we have it here. It is plainly hard to see things as special if you grew up with it thinking it is normal. Of course there is plenty that can/needs to improve here as well and even if I think part of why we have it as good as we have is because we are willing to complain without much "respect for authority". We should probably stand still and appreciate what we have more often. This video did that for me, so thank you.

Thanks for the reminder of how grateful we should be living in the Netherlands. After a while you start taking the blessings for granted if if you know better. I moved here around my 17th from Kenya. I had a Dutch pasport since my birth so that step was a logical move in order to study. 2 of my 3 brothers couldn’t earth here and finally they found their way to the USA. Honestly, they have both made a good living for them selves and their family in the USA but they have kept their Dutch values.

We have seen many parts of the world, and it makes us all the more aware of the good life here. We are also very happy to know you feel really at home in Rotterdam and how you appreciate all the little things we take for granted. We hope you will stay with us for many years to come. Kauw in English is Jackdaw.. Never knew that.. They are plenty in the Netherlands. It's the little nephew of the crow. Another nephew that you will see in winter is the Rook (roek in Dutch) a crow-family member larger than a crow (but smaller than a Raven - extinct in the Netherlands) with a bare base of the beak. The most colourful crow-family member is de Jay (Vlaamse gaai in Dutch) and the black-and-white noisy bird Magpie ( Ekster). In some other European countries you can spot the Hooded Crow (Bonte kraai) which has a black head and grey body and black wings. OK I will now stop being the bird nerd.

I´ve been living in the US for almost 10 years. I´ve lived in Texas and Indiana, and travelled around a lot. My fondness for the US is linked to its people (Americans--many of them-- are just lovely, curious, chatty, friendly, helpful, and...aaah, I just love them), and to its landscapes (just so much variety, from beaches to mountains, deserts to forests, and everything in between). HOWEVER, there are some foundational problems in governance and policy that I don´t think the US will overcome (or survive) any time soon. It feels like it´s people like you that could make this country better, but of course (I totally get it) you choose to live elsewhere. I hope that, if you return to the US, you will influence your communities to grow in the right direction. I love your channel.

The simple things of life, i totally agree. When i moved from Rotterdam to the Hoeksche Waard, my children grew up her, one born in the 'Erasmus medical centre and the other at home in Oud Beijerland.. Countryside living, about 20 min. from Rotterdam.. for me used to living in the city always feeling misplaced. When i came to the Hoeksche Waard It felt like living the good life, taking a deep breath and be free. Nice people saying hello ( at first i looked behind me, expecting somebody they new walking behind me but no so you greeted them back. When i went back from a visit in Rotterdam, driving to the Heinenoord tunnel i felt a relief and i was feeling so happy because it really felt like crossing a border, back in my own country, ( never felt that in my life). Seeing birds of prey, deer, and other beatifull animals Things are changing, so time will tell but i hope the Hoeksche Waard will stay a country side. Love your channel, bye.

The singing birds in the morning (they start at sunset) are merels or lijsters. If you listen closely, you will notice that they are communicating with each other. One bird sings a tune and you will hear another bird from a distance repeating that tune. It starts very simple, with one note, but the tunes get more and more complicated. It's like they're dualling.

Hahaha I love the little Kauw'en (jackdaws). They're super smart and a bit cheeky sometimes. My cat loves to watch them in the morning when they start yipping and yapping to each other.

Maybe part of that bird experience has to do with noise pollution. What amazed me both in California (Vallejo and SF) was the constant road noise. Be that sirens, cars, people.

About having their hand on their child's shoulder when cycling: probably just pushing them along. Adults tend to peddle faster, meaning children have to peddle insanely fast on their small bikes with tiny wheels in order to keep up. You can see teenagers doing the same when their friend has a scooter or eletric bike, but this time they hold onto the shoulder of the faster person pulling themselves along.

Or safety. Until me and my brother had a certain age, my parents did that as well in certain areas in town. There where a lot of roads with narrow cycling paths, that you also had to share with cars. So that can get dangerous if it’s busy and you’re too young the oversee the traffic situation.

Speaking about living a life! I love it when people are able to notice these little things that really make life worth living. It's a gift ... it really is! Putting your hand on the back of a small child while biking is I believe a safety measure. It ensures staying together while keeping enough distance between the bikes to avoid side collisions. It also helps the child to keep a save steady speed. Recently I wrote the comment below in reaction on "Dear Dutch People, DON'T Take This For Granted" by 'Exploring the foreign'. I think it fits your story too. Quote: "One of the reasons to follow expat channels and those of immigrants is that I'm learning a lot about my home country as well as about a lot of other nations and cultures elsewhere. Pride is not something we're used to showing to obviously. But we do have reason to be proud. You made some excellent points. Our 'normal' isn't very normal in a lot of countries, including the U.S." Thanks for this one ... Looking forward to more!

The things you’re mentioning, are things I as a Dutch person really love about my country as well. It’s something you notice even more, if you leave the country for a bit and get back home. I in particular love the birds and greenery everywhere (well, nearly everywhere). But I’ve noticed “we” try to put plants anywhere it’s possible. Most roundabout in my area are like mini gardens.

Almost everything you mention (including hearing the birds) has to do with the reduction of car traffic and your ability to safely walk about. My husband and I agree we want to live somewhere where we don't have to own a car. I really think that should be what the future looks like. Thank you for the great videos. p.s. I agree I don't get the flooring thing, but it is why click together floors were invented and I love click together flooring ;)

Hi Eric and Tammy, it's because of people like you that make me realise that NL is a comfortable place to be. I'm sort of like a fish noticing the water. I think a difference is, that what we call "being social", would in the US be called "socialism". Kindness is not a weakness.

Thanks for the great video (again!). I really appreciate those small things too. Enjoying the environment and everyone's happiness. Especially since I went into a burn out. Makes me happy to observe those little things. What I was thinking that it would be great if you could do a video where you talk about/show what you eat during the week and in weekends (meals and snacks inbetween). I am curious if you incorporate Dutch food/habits in it now you live in the Netherlands for a while. Love you guys!
