Living longer isn't always about genetics. You have more control over your ability to live well into your golden years than you think.
The secret to hitting the genetic jackpot is explored with Drs. Alona Pulde and Matthew Lederman.
The authors of Wellness to Wonderful share what they've discovered to be the biggest keys to not just living longer, but also healthier and with greater joy. It's a recipe that extends beyond simply eating healthier and into what it means to live a full existence in all areas of life.
For example, they discuss why a man was still able to hand wash his car well after turning 100 years old.
Drs. Pulde and Lederman join "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room Podcast with fascinating insight into living the long and rewarding life you're striving for.

After the two men exchanged their attempts at greater connection, the moderator actually looked more relaxed, with better color on his face. Beautiful to see--yes, open, vulnerable men do have greater depth, and are therefore more attractive on many levels!

Rich S 72 year old Bodybuilder… I was talking yesterday to Dr. Scharffenberg. He’s going to be 100 in December. He drove to the event I was at. Great example of someone who is plant base and also knows how to be 100 and be as active as he is. He was talking to Chef AJ. I asked him about how important it is to have exercise in your life in your uptake of calcium into your bones. This man is very sharp, not just for someone 100, but for anybody. He has no decline at all in his Cognition. Because I always say about me I am the test, to see if things work, well he certainly is the test for what you want to be as you get older. This man doesn’t just exist, he lives .💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

Maybe all he really did was study the special meal plan from Richard Arvin Overton who was still driving his truck at age 109, he called it the Overton diet and if you didn't take his advice he would say it's your own back luck. Did Scharffenberger tell you about the recall notice he just got for his car, something about the nut behind the wheel?

I absolutely love the concepts they call nonviolent communication. Unfortunately I have a really negative emotional reaction to the phrase nonviolence communication. Even woefully abusive communication is still nonvilotent. The word violance has a very important definition, we do not want to water it down with misuse. Maybe they are just a product of their generation, and I'm just old. Ok, that was my vent. Now I want to praise their ideas. I love that they teach a third way to voice our needs without unnecessarily hurting others (they explained it much better than this paraphrase). I also love how they teach us to recognize our feelings. (And, when he said knowing is half the battle, I got to add "yo Joe" which was fun, lol)

I really appreciated your comment, as I also don't particularly like the term nonviolent communication (NVC). But that is what the originator, Marshall Rosenberg, termed it when he developed it in the 1960s or 1970s. I believe it was a product of practices by Gandhi, Martin Luther King, et al. I think nonviolence is a translation of the Sanskrit term ahimsa, or non-harming, which perhaps might be more relatable. If I were naming this approach from scratch, I would call it Connected Conversations. Whatever you call it, I think it's transformational when I practice it.

Utter BS. I eat keto and oftentimes carnivore. It works for me. But I accept that because of differences in DNA, the right diet for individuals may vary. That being said, I agree that vegan, real Mediterranean, keto, or carnivore are all vastly better than the standard American diet by orders of magnitude. Avoiding "seed Oils" refined sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and starchy vegetables seems to work well for me. I am currently keto tending toward carnivore. Robert Lustig MD who advocate generally for consumption of soluble and insoluble fiber admits that on keto, fiber may not be needed for good bowel health. Avoiding constipation for me involves drinking enough water and consuming enough fat. Too much fat yields diarrhea while to little yields constipation. I believe one's bowel flora tends to adjust to diet. It is likely that one's microbiome reflects a bacterial population that works to digest the food with which it is supplied.

@@white-rabbit93 I am 80. I was inspired years ago by Robert Atkins MD to do keto. It worked but I was persuaded by MSM that it was dangerous. I returned to it about 6 months ago. Diet consists of meat (primarily beef), but also bacon, eggs, sardines, salmon, some pork, eggs, butter extra virgin olive oil, butter plain full fat yogurt, heavy cream, some cheeses. I was Influenced by Ben Bikman, phD, Shawn Baker MD, Jeff Volek, MD, Chris Palmer MD Robert Cywes, MD, David Ludwig, MD, and Chris Palmer MD.(Sometimes I do eat some non-starchy vegetables!) When I was young I could eat 60 gms of carbs per day and stay in ketosis. It is now only 20 grams.
