Living on a Tug boat is in one of the coolest things I’ve done so far in my Merchant Seamen career. From working on cruise ships in Hawaii, to sailing around Korean and making stops in Japan. Working & living on a tug boat is completely different and cool in its own right. My Grandfather disappeared for a little while back during the Great Depression and nobody knew what happened to him. He went to Norfolk Virginia and got a job on a tugboat. He didn't even know what his job would be till they got out to sea. The captain told him he had better learn to cook or learn to swim. So he learned to cook pretty good. When he got older and was retired 30 plus years later every now and then, I got to go spend the night at my Grandparent's house. My Grandfather always cooked breakfast after he retired. He cooked the best damned breakfast! You didn't need no alarm clock in that house. Your nose and your belly would wake you up bright and early. The smell of that coffee brewing, that bacon and those eggs sizzling and those pancakes cooking up would wake you up faster than any alarm clock could. Those were the good old days, long gone. I miss those times.

Normally, unless its a very small boat, you share a room, but youre not in there at the same time, you stand opposite watches. Captain, mate and engineer usually have a private stateroom, again, depends on the size of the boat.
