Just to be clear to those reading the comments: The GrapheneOS Updater automatically downloads and installs updates (to the second install slot of the device). You have to manually press 'Reboot now' for the update to finish installing. This means that the Updater isn't going to automatically reboot and so doesn't disrupt your usage. You can manually enable the Updater to auto-reboot if you want.

There has been some trouble indeed, but the project is very solid, which alone is enough to consider if you want to use it. The community is very helpful, you don't have to just rely on the devs. I personally find solutions to my problems in community forums, where I get tons of useful information and ideas.

When and whether you try to switch to these open-source, non-proprietary like Graphene or Linux and open-source apps and programs for both, I want you to think of it this way: We have doors and gates with locks to them in our houses and cars and whatnot right? Are they convenient? No. I would rather do away with locks on everything altogether. But, they serve a purpose that is security and privacy. We are willing to trade our convenience for privacy/security here, and sooner or later with all the data hoarding/selling companies and them getting breached ever so often, we will need to make the same trade with our computers and online accounts one day. And I would rather switch myself slowly but steadily now than being forced to in the future.

The multi-tasking button is probably not working because of the physical damage to your phone or screen protector. Could be a coincidence, but I had the same problem happen at about the same time mine got damaged. (I am not using GraphineOS)

On a brand new Pixel 9 Pro XL using the regular OS but I am using a different launcher. I've always experienced the same issues using 3 button navigation including on my pixel 7. Not broken screen. It's a bug with the 3 button navigation. Either a restart or changing the navigation fixes it until it acts up again

There is a way to schedule system updates (kind of). Change your permitted networks to unmetered only and it will only update when you are on a home or office wifi network.

I had an iPhone 11 pro max as my last iPhone when it first came out. But I am a die hard Linux user and I really wanted to give Android a try. So I switched to LineageOS Google Pixel 3, Lineage OS Google Pixel 4 XL, and now I am running Graphene OS with Google Pixel 8 Pro. But I intend on keeping the Google Pixel 8 Pro for the entire 7 years. Graphene OS is _AWESOME_ I like the control it gives me. I run no Google Play Store crap either F-droid or from the Aurora Store. The best part about Google Pixel 8 Pro is I can plug it into a USB C dock and use it as a Linux Desktop.

Just in case no one said it, from what ive seen, the multitasking button breaking is an Android 14 & any custom launcher issue. On my P8P i have to disable/stop the Pixel Launcher for the multitasking button to start working again if I'm using Nova Launcher or Niagara Launcher. No issues if I'm using the default Pixel Launcher, though It's a known issue for custom launchers on Android and has been confirmed by Nova support that its an Android issue. I just gave up on 3 button nav and switched to gestures because it was a hassle and I want the custom launchers. Its been around for a while and I guess Google doesnt care enough to fix it

Haven't experienced that "multitasking button stops working" bug on my Pixel 7a. However if I add more than one fingerptint for unlocking the phone, it will stop working after the profile switch. It has been reported to be AOSP bug, rather than GOS bug, but still it is annoying.

The hard part is commiting yourself to the app profiles. Originally I made one for both Discord, and Revanced both of which now sit on my default profile.

@GodOfChaos_HeXa Technically yes, but Graphene does a great job of sandboxing each app to begin with to prevent data collection. Each profile acts like a more secure sandbox. They can't interact with each other, fully separated so even if you got some super new form of malware which could bypass all the security features of graphene os it would only compromise the apps in that profile at most. All other profiles are completely safe, its just security to the max degree, but you have to switch profiles to use the apps in those profiles. The default profile is recommended to be left alone, but if one must their most common of apps like discord or something. Save the other apps for other profiles, I like to keep all my banking apps in their own profile.

Devices in extended support should get all the latest Graphene changes compared to the releases for fully supported devices. Only exception to that is device specific functionality like the USB Port control feature being exclusive to 6th gen Pixels and newer. The Updater interface and functionality looks the same on my Pixel 8 compared to your Pixel 5 shown in video.

You can, in LineageOS 21, limit the battery to your preffered state, for me 80% works well, but you can set it between 70-100 limit. I am running it on a Moto G32 so your mileage may vary but for those who don't have a Pixel, Lineage is a solid choice. Been running Cyanogenmod before, now lineage, for years, no problems

graphene os is open source and its code is trusted by the developers. Also you can relock the bootloader of your phone which enhance the security. This is a good rom if you consider to get pixel smartphone. The calyx os is also a good stock rom and supports some low end moto phones but it is not as secure as graphene os

Basically, from the software side, if you get a Samsung oem phone, you will deal with a bunch of bloatware which cannot be uninstalled. Also, this OS can let you control all the permission an app can use. This thing doesn't come with the pre-installed google crap and you can set multiple users for like social media and another user for making phone calls and stuff. Safer than apple i can guarantee

This has been broadcast in a few places, but most legacy media will not broadcast it. From research I’ve done and videos here on KZbin, there’s only one or two out all of the worlds car brands don’t upload your phone data and sell it, let alone listen in on car conversations. Depending on the brand, some cars as old as twenty-fifteen have been shown to suck the data from your phone. My suggestion is also to don’t connect to your car sound system if it’s a late model.

Apps shouldn't be using Play Integrity if they want to check for device tampering anyway. Instead they should use the native Hardware Attestation API, and ideally whitelist GrapheneOS as well.

Keep in mind this in all voluntary of google to collaborate. They can blacklist your OS anytime. They made it so 3rd party app Authy cant work on any rom citing integrity checks (this is the kind of stuff their current monopoly/antitrust lawsuit is about). Though there are much better software to use other than Authy if you are privacy minded. GrapheneOS users and advocates were discussing this behavior recently and the timing of the lawsuit was perfect, they would have a case they met all the requirements are more secure than the oem rom and are still selectively kicked out.

When you type in your password after a reboot it stores the decryption key in memory, so you can see the names of people you have saved calling you instead of the phone number and whatever. That means a cool entity with cool gadgets can unlock your phone pretty easily, a reboot basically doesn't allow any of that so the only option is to bruteforce which is impossible if you use a good password.

it puts the phone in lockdown and all the data stored in ram gets washed out. It is very similar to the lockdown option and also the biometrics are disabled. Also about brute forcing, if you lock the bootloader, then there is no tool to make the brute force to happen. It will get locked permanently or factory reset after bunch of times

Also once reboot is triggered you need the full pin/password to unlock it, and your fingerprint will no longer work, so if you are detained, arrested, and your phone is confiscated you cant be forced to unlock it with face or fingerprint. All data is encrypted at rest and the combination of googles secure chip and graphenes immutable os, means it cant be read, nor can it be altered, etc,. its basically unhackable. if they try to alter the OS to get access to your data it fails integrity check, and won't work, it uses a signed and locked bootloader.
