I have been to Cairo over 25 times and I can attest that it is like a beautiful diamond, with many beautiful facets. The "old " city is just one facet. Indeed it is old and gray but just as beautiful! I would encourage everyone to see Egypt before they leave this planet. Enjoy every part of Cairo even the old Cairo!

Heather Harder if you get a chance...could you share, in regards to Cairo...the best “unheard of” beautiful feature? (a building with a most enigmatic design/the best neighborhood speaker array to be near during the call to prayer/a certain cafe that hosts an authentic atmosphere/a city street that’s best to hear the melodic rhythm of society....) whatever your personal favorite “token” place/person/subtle sensory detail/experience was? It would be much appreciated for my upcoming trip to Cairo. I would love the opinion of a woman of your experience and positivity.

Beautiful, beautiful, brought tears to my eyes, many times, very well done. Our family has beautiful memories of our visit to Egypt in Ramadan of 2000. We were in Cairo, Alexandria and Luxor. But I fell in love with Cairo. I miss a lot that city, and especially Zamalek. Thank you very much for this happy time.

Historic places should be vibrant of people’s lives, that's how it should be. You can turn the whole city to be a museum but it will be soulless

Not their culture to accomodate but at least proudly show the world that you love your country and not let it go to literally ruins. Sad but whether they like it or not, they really need help.

Cairo may be rather scruffy in places but in my experience the people of Cairo are some of the nicest in the world; for me that is a much more important measure of civilisation than a few glittery skyscrapers.
