I went to Sydney Australia in the summer of 1995 and they were already preparing for the 2000 Olympics. I remember there was signs everywhere and they were working on some of the locations events would take place. One of my souvenir shirts was the logo for it saying 2000 Olympics Sydney. It felt like it was so far off in the future! Loved every bit of my trip to Australia and New Zealand. Your video brought back some memories and I’d love to go back!

Lovely to see your video. Just a small note, adding to what others have mentioned: Sydney has many bridges, so no one calls it the Sydney Bridge, it's the Harbour Bridge for short, or Sydney Harbour Bridge - one of the few things we don't usually shorten, but if Sydneysiders do, it's just The Bridge. In older times, some people affectionately called it The Coathanger. I don't know who told you that story about embarrassment over convict history, it's hard to believe. Anyone I know is very proud, and some boastful, of any convict heritage. It's part of the rebellious heritage/psyche of the country - many of the convicts were actually political dissidents and religious prisoners. Some Australian (Aussie=Ozzie) pronunciation: Macquarie=Mack-wuhh-ree. Bondi=Bond-eye / Bon-die Beach. Centennial=Cen-ten-ee-al Park.
@livingphase28 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for all your clarifications. We truly appreciate it.
@coraliemoller38968 ай бұрын
@@livingphase2 The convict cringe is very true. It may be unknown for young Australians but I am almost 69 and it was known as the cultural cringe. A lot of British people would throw our convict heritage in our faces. Botany Bay was synonymous with convicts, penal settlements, even in American shows of the 1950s and 1960s. I remember wishing they would focus on the good things about my hometown. Then as Australia progressed as a decent society and gained a positive reputation, more people became interested in their family history. With the discovery of lost convict ancestors, whose genes had been resilient enough to endure the privations of this open land and to last to the current generation, it became a matter of pride amongst those who could claim First or Second Fleet whether as a convict or as a free settler.

I live in Sydney and I love how much you loved our city. My husband has to go to Bondi beach (pronounced Bond eye 🙂) a couple of times a week as part of his job, lucky him, it’s certainly an iconic beach but when you come back again hop on a ferry and head to Manly, it’s a beautiful beach fringed with gorgeous Norfolk Island pine trees, there’s lots of great restaurants over there too. We have dozens of beautiful beaches in Sydney. Try and get up to the Blue Mountains too, spectacular views and plenty of walking tracks. You’re right about the convict heritage, it’s pretty much a badge of honour in Australia to be a convict descendent nowadays. Well done climbing the bridge, it’s a goal of ours. Really enjoy your videos and the enthusiasm and joy you have for all of your adventures. Oh and bin chickens (ibis), yuck, they’re everywhere 😏 but I understand the novelty of seeing different animals, we were mesmerised the first time we saw squirrels in Central Park, pretty sure the New Yorkers thought we were crazy 😁

I’m so glad you loved my home town of Sydney Australia. It made me feel proud. No criticism here but some Ozzie language for you … our bridge is called “Sydney Harbour Bridge” and we say “Mrs MacQuarie said McQw o re” the ‘o’ is said like it’s sound. Hope that makes sense. Our beach is Bondi said Bond and the “I” is said as an 👁️. I love you guys and your accent is great. What you said about Bondi is exactly right. I’m in Canada at the moment and I keep getting there words mixed up 🤦🏼♀️😂. The bats are like pests in some places. Yes we have so many things that can kill you 😂 you both look so happy on the bridge. If you go back to Sydney you must do the Bondi to Coogie coastal walk. It is just incredible! My sister and I were just in Australia in March (from Canada) and we wished we had more time in Sydney too.

Wow can't believe how much of Sydney you covered. Your guide knew his stuff. I love how Americans say Bondi, it makes me laugh. It's pronounced Bon Die. Love Doyles, fun fact Mike the next bay around called Camp Cove is a nice easy night dive location. Have had a few Doyles fish and chips before a dive. To top it off with the bridge, no wonder you were both smiling so much. Thank you for sharing your journey.

My husband used to work at Doyle’s in the 80s.

One of my favourite books, which was subsequently made into a film in the ‘80s is Ruth Park’s ‘Playing Beatie Bow’. It’s a fantasy story about a girl who time-travels back to the Rocks in the 1800s. It gives you a glimpse of what life may have been like there back then. I named my daughter after the actress who played ‘Abigail’ - Imogen Annesley.
