Great piece. I grew up idolizing baker and piss drunks. Drinking and skating went hand in hand. It was once my super power and made me “better” at skating. Then the drinking became more important. Not only did I NEED alcohol to skate, I needed it to live. I am so grateful for stories like Erik’s , Andrew’s and skateboarders alike who have shared their struggles with alcoholism. I am 38 years old and have been sober for 7 months. The longest sobriety time I’ve had since I tried to get it in 2019.

Such an awesome conversation! Being a 13 y/o skateboarder in 2000 was like a dream. As far as my nostalgia goes, BEST era in skateboarding 💯

A lot of skateboarders came from broken homes and unfortunately went down the same path of self destruction. A lot of us did not make it. It’s great that these guys are talking about how dark it can really get and that there is hope to get your shit together.

It’s really common in board sports. That focus on our craft can shut out our demons, or we channel our demons into our art/skateboarding. I always encourage people to get help if they need it. I’m so glad Ellington has come out the other side.

it's very interesting what the relationship between art and expression does to a person's evolution. skateboarding has opened a lot of people's minds to that side of themself and this is LIVING PROOF

I have a few months sober and it's so sick to hear Erik's story. I watched so much of this guy when I was a kid, I learned bigspins because of him. The dudes in the 12 step rooms I'm in are great but a lot of them are real old and tough to relate to and shit but this is great. Thanks for doing this man

Congratulations on your sobriety! Andrew Reynolds also has some mature perspectives on his past addictions, if you haven’t checked out his interviews also. Keep up the hard work 🤙🏻🛹

❤the 2000-2006 era of skating was the best. I literally thought I was Andrew Reynolds and Ellington. Lol I did everything they did I was so influenced by them it’s crazy. Dopest times ever I wish I could go back and pause it forever and live here . I would do anything for a pair of the Reynolds ones and twos.

I wish that there was some kind of authority or support within professional skateboarding that was able to help navigate skaters through the inevitable perils of addictions that come with the kind of freedom provided at that young age so that fewer guys lose their lives and careers to it.
@ALLTRENDSCOMETOANEND11 күн бұрын
I honestly think the baker guys did create a lot of up and coming addicts. I am glad they made it out I just wonder about the fans that followed suite partying right along with them because that's what they were seeing them do.

Now lets talk about the sheer number of lives he participated in ruining for being a horrendous role modle for kids. Countless kids i know in tiny georgia skate scene ran the whole piss drunk thing and ruined their lives. Sitting upvhere gloating about hhis success while thousands of lives were ruined all to be cool
@Ry_SLАй бұрын
Did Erik make them drink? Did he make them try drugs for the first time? Movies and TV also had this impact but are you going to point fault at those outlets? Erik had a camera around him when he was younger whether he liked it or not because his talent on the board was beyond amazing-his choices and lifestyle weren’t meant to be replicated.
