We're elderly, so you can help us out. 👵🏼😊 Were usually forced to cook at least twice a week whether we feel like it or not. 😂 We also cook big batches which we eat 3-4 days in a row. Otherwise it's sandwiches. It's not the most exciting menu but it works for us since we were both raised to be thankful and not picky. Believe me, meals had much more variety when we were young! I love all your videos and you are my favorite homesteaders. It's fun to watch your beautiful daughters grow up and your exciting, busy farm life. I wish we were 50 years younger but God has given us His best through 47 years of marriage. May He bless and protect you all! Much love from a Granny in Texas.

Thank you for explaining freeze drying and giving your review of the Harvest Right! I’m the Executive Chef of my region’s food bank, and I’ve been looking for ways to expand food storage, reduce waste, and provide meals for our unhoused population. This is my answer! (Side benefits are that my food pantries can keep meals on the shelf instead of taking up precious freezer space, and as most of the pantry volunteers are elderly, the reduced weight is an added bonus!). I am fortunate to have found a donor who has purchased FOUR of the large units for my kitchen! I cannot wait for them to arrive and to get started experimenting with recipes! I’ve always found your channel to be informative and a fun escape during my week, but this is going to be absolutely life changing for so many of my clients! Thank you!

As a non-elderly food pantry volunteer, I say YES! Anything we can do to increase nutrition, decrease weight, save space in our facilities, help clients save space in their homes, all the while offering great taste is fabulous! Many clients have limited kitchens, too. What’s easier than adding water? Even hotel rooms come with coffee (hot water) makers. If you’ve been successful, please let me know. Are the clients receptive to freeze-dried food?

My Flight Attendant daughter and her boys all have food allergy issues so have a very customized diet. She bought a dryer and can take her "safe foods" on her trips. Sometimes they are 9-10 days long so previously it was very difficult to take enough food with her. Now the dryer has made things so easy for her. Light weight, flat and still tasty. Just some hot water from the galley and she's able to eat well. Highly recommend this method.

If the product is weighed before and after freeze drying, the difference in weight will be the amount of water needed to rehydrate. If you write that amount on the bag or on the label of the jar, getting back to where you started will be a little easier.

I've kinda done the same thing with dehydrated potatoes. I used to use a lot of the sliced casserole box potatoes like cheesy bacon au'gratin or scalloped potatoes. By using their water amounts and the weight of the dried potatoes to put together my own "box kits" of potatoes it works rather well. I just make my own cheese sauces instead of the powdered ones. The liquid ratios still seem to work well, despite having different liquids. Only occasionally do I have to add a splash of milk or cook a tad longer due to too much liquid. I do think its because I use all types of potatoes in my mix and not just one. I bet this will get Kevin to do a bit of "nerdy farm math" for us 🥰

💡- Keeping a diary of fresh weight Vs dried weight after reconstitution them will make it easier for future meals. Also, you can easily add your boiling water straight into the mylar bag, fold the top over, and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. It will help keep the heat in and can be served straight out of the bag. For those curious as to why mylar : Mountain House is a top tier company and has been using it for their freeze dried foods for decades. They have done testing on samples and advertise their food tastes as fresh as it did when processed up to 25 years later. They have even tested it after 30 years and have said it won't be long before they feel comfortable updating the 25 year mark to 30.

If you like lamb, you'll LOVE this one... Take the broth and freeze dry that. Instant broth or gravy fixins. Same with chicken....and beef...

I am so drawn to your channel. I wish this type of information was around 40 years ago when I was big into gardening, canning and freezing. Now it's old age and just me I'm feeding me. I enjoy seeing all your reasons to do things, and also what things didn't work and why. You guys are an amazing couple. Keep sharing, and we will keep watching! God Bless~!

Kevin makes a really good crusty bread in their dutch oven. I know this bread is good and tasty as I have made it myself a few times now and it would absolutely go great with these soups. :) I think if you scroll through past videos you can find the recipe and method for the bread.

I would love one of these just for the fun of it, but my garden is not large enough to justify it. I’ll just have to keep enjoying your adventures in freeze-drying. I’d love to try those freeze-dried ice cream sandwiches!

When I went to the website for the freeze dryer there was a choice of pumps, which you all have not mentioned, a discussion about those would be very helpful. Thank you.
