Yes definitely take the camera to the car show please. My P6 had a stainless steel full exhaust system fitted back in 1995 with a lifetime warranty 🤣and is still valid apparently, and it is still in perfect working order some 28 years later!.. (Phil)

Full stainless steel exhaust is the way to go, costly pain now but miles of smiles later on.

I had a 1980 Triumph TR8 convertible with the same 3.5 liter Rover derived V8 engine. These engines sound fantastic with dual exhausts. You might want to consider doing a custom dual exhaust conversion on your car in the future to really awaken the Rover's V8.

I bought exhaust tube for my V12 Jag and basically cut out the catalytic convertors, rotten exhaust and the mid section mufflers so just have the rear mufflers. It was a tedious job with lots of cutting and welding but very satisfying when done. The car sounds mean without being loud and goes so much better.

Yes please, take us to the car show. We are having our British Car Show this Saturday. The featured model this year is the MG, should be lots of cars there.

Adam, that rear silencer could be from either a 4 cylinder 2000/2200, or even a V8 3500S manual car. It's difficult to tell unless you have them side by side, the section lengths, and pipe bore vary by model. The exhaust sytstems are almost completely different between manual and automatics too. The exhaust manifolds on the 3500S V8 manual cars have a bigger bore output and flange than an automatic car too, so not interchangeable When the rear silencer blew out on one of my P6 V8 auto's, I cut off the splt box and tailpipe. I welded on a triangle pipe flange where I'd cut off the old rear silencer box. Then I welded a longer tailpipe and hanger to a new bolt on big bore resonator from the V section of the front of a 3500S system. The 3500S has a bigger bore up front than the automatic, so it didn't reduce the rear end bore. You could easily do the same thing by using an aftermarket "cherry bomb" silencer. I bolted my made up silencer on with a new metal olive and It really did make that V8 sound richer than the standard rear silencer, without being as loud as a straight through pipe.
@nigelsears7191 Жыл бұрын
the back box with the smaller diameter pipe is the 2000/2200 , from experience the pattern exhaust systems were often different in exact positions of coplers , best option there is the local exhaust shop and pick a replacement silencer and just chop the old one out and weld in the new one using your original pipe or invest in a new system

Could you not weld a patch on to the old exhaust? Very cute dog 🐕 btw 😊

I mentioned in the video that when the hole is covered the internals rattle. Hence leaving it open is the better solution for now

I'll add a vote for the car show. For a quick fix, could you weld a plate of scrap steel (or a split food can) over the hole? Just weld onto the outside, no need for sophistication on the underside of the car.

If at first you don't succeed, well, try again and you will prevail! Thanks for a great video, Adam.

@@LivingWithAClassic you may want to use the existing tail pipe assembly and install a good muffler on it, problem solved! Thanks!

Clearly there are differences between the 2 systems, the fitted one looks much smaller, as if it was for a 2000 / 2200 or maybe and earlier 3500 ? Check further along to see if there is some adaptation to fit the manifold connections ? I’d maybe try to weld / wrap a patch over the hole but your box-only transplant idea also seems like a good solution to use an otherwise-unusable spare part.
@mrcogginsgarage7062 Жыл бұрын
It's a Rover Adam they all do that !... Seriously weld a plate on to the old back box and secure that loose baffle pipe and when time / money allows fit a stainless system then it's job done. One thing about Stainless systems is that they can and do change the exhaust note,cheep one will make it ring and sound tinny,good luck with it.

Frustrating when you're sure it's going to work and that small inexpected thing makes it goes wrong. Unfortunately, I'm used to that, hahaha. I'm constantly learning from you (simpler things I must add).

happens a lot with classics with mild steel exhausts, condensation sat in the silencer doesn't become apparent until you start it and it blows a hole in the box.....wouldn't be the first classic i've heard that has done that.
@dhdove Жыл бұрын
Looking at the position of that hole I’d say it was corroded due to water lying inside the box due to condensation. Maybe it did a lot of short journeys in an earlier life?
@jabirucru6970 Жыл бұрын
That is a pain when it happens. If it were me as it is off I would clean it up and wrap it in exhaust bandage and whack it back on. That should last a while. Time to get back to my s type and fit a new window regulator and then a drivers door module. There’s no end of fun with an older car!!!
@LivingWithAClassic Жыл бұрын
The problem with wrapping it is that it then rattles. If I leave the hole it at least doesn’t rattle
@mikedx2706 Жыл бұрын
You have the skills and tools to do welding. Why not just cut off the leaking box and replace it with a small glass pack or weld in the muffler from your friend to the original tail pipe which fits your car? That will be an inexpensive way to do a repair and make the exhaust system safe. It's not really safe to keep driving it with a hole in the rear muffler. You can't smell carbon monoxide, but it is being sucked into the car's interior because it is a low pressure area aerodynamically.
