I've been watching these vids lately and have a few questions for anyone that knows the answers. 1) Why are the waves so rough? 2) I see people who are going fast. Is there a logic to that? Is it better than going slow? 3) How far out does one have to go before things calm down? I'm assuming it does calm down at some point. 4) Are people trying to time the waves? Like throttling, then laying off, then hit the throttle hard again? Never been on the ocean, thanks in advance.
@PETERJOHN1012 жыл бұрын
Wind is the only thing that moves water, so if it's choppy in the inlet, it's choppy farther out, however the inlet does amplify the waves due to the approaching shoreline. On your other question, the physics of a boat hull means that forward motion elevates the boat a few feet above the water, so it's a bad idea to stall in choppy water. I still don't know why boats aren't constructed round, since you can't capsize a donut, but I guess they wouldn't move quickly either.

Use to go through the cut in our little 15' 10" citation with a 35 hp chrysler engine - sometimes comming in you would be riding between a wall of water that seemed like it was 6 ft higher than the bow. The current on the outgoing tide can really make some waves and the swirls can point you right at the rocks if not careful - this is a very dangerous inlet - you need to see it when the outgoing tide is at its peak. I have seen 25 ft boats stand on their tails and have to turn around and come back in when its rough.

About 90% of the outboard boaters on these videos have their engines trimmed all the way down, resulting in the cavitation tabs forcing the bow down. I used to go fishing down the Hull near Boston which was a 2 hr. drive from my home, and there was no way that I would put in my boat if the water was rough, especially since I had to go through a gut which was the roughest part of the water. I noticed some boats handled the waves much better than others, even some of the smaller boats due to the configuration of their hulls. Of course you have to use your head if you are going to challenge the waves in the video, which means take it slow.

Justin, think of a wave as a circle, in Deep water the waves aren't pushed up at all, but come into any inlet and there is shoaling which causes that wheel to make a higher wave. Now add in the Standing waves, those are waves which don't go straight into the and you get a very confused sea. When coming home in any inlet, it is best to not overpower Mother Nature and try surfing the waves. The last thing you want to do is bury the bow in the wave in front.
