Hi LivKenya, I think the reason most people from Africa expect Soweto to be a slum is due to the fact that in their countries, the concept of a township is non-existent. They either have a city or town and then the villages. At the periphery of their towns would be poor slums which are the poverty areas of their towns. Hence, the townships confuse them, and they expect them to be slums. Only RSA and Namibia have townships. Unless there are other countries I am not aware of. Because most people other countries through the lens of their own lived experience. Enjoy RSA.

Every city or town has a township. Townships are not slums. Township is an area where there are low cost housing. Township has everything a person would need to live, clean running water, electricity, toilets in the house and tarred roads. And then there are surbabs where rich or middle/class people live.

@LIVKENYA SOWETO is actually ALL-IN-ONE Residential area. It is a combo of different townships and slums. There are SUPER RICH people living in Soweto and it just depends on what area are you. There are also the SUPER POOR in Soweto who live in slums but majority are foreigners from neighbouring Zimbabwe and Lesotho. Thise people cannot afford rent and rather they grabbed the land and build informal settlements to settle. You will simply lie to yourself when you look at Soweto as a low income neighbourhood because you will still get some areas where the super rich live Thanks my sister and enjoy your stay in South Africa Mzansi.

But guys, Soweto is a low income community. Sure you do get people who are doing well for themselves and you get people who are not doing so well. When it comes to income, we look at the total average household income with all things considered. If we say Soweto is a middle class/upper middle class community then what do we call a Mondeo or a Norkem Ham in kempon park? Because they're definitely not upper class. Soweto is like a Vosloorus or a Dayveton. What Soweto is not is a slum, I think we're all clear on that.
