Soweto stands for;South Western Townships... Its not one Township but diffirent townships of the South Western, hence diffirent places, demographics, conditions. Its a vibrant urban area under Johannesburg, famously known for its anti-apartheid struggle as you can tell, Mandela House. It spans approximately 200 square kilometers and is home to over 1.3 million people, making it one of the largest townships in the country. Its just a mix of bustling areas like Vilakazi Street, where Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu once lived, and informal settlements marked by poverty. The hospital, Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto its not just only the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere but the largest hospital in Africa, and 4th largest in the world. Wish you could revisit Soweto with a local well informed about the place.. As you have said, it's not just slumps.😅😅

That military base was use by the solders during apartheid to guard the power station that is now turned into Bungee jump... The very same iconic soweto bungee jump that you see down the road. That power station was decommissioned around 1998... It never use to supply electricity to soweto at the time most of soweto had no electricity. So to protect the power station from being vandalized and destroyed, they came up with that military base next to Bara hospital.😅

I once heard one Kenyan blogger telling European tourists while touring a large slum in Kenya that the largest slum is in South Africa called Soweto. I just laughed. Soweto have such a rich history some of which I also don't know... The Mall that is just after the university of Johannesburg in Pimville_ Maponya mall. That mall is the biggest mall in Soweto... It was owned by the late Dr Maponya. Maponya is the same man that is seen in that 1990 footage of Nelson Mandela as he was released from prison , walking with Winnie Mandela with their 👊 fist up... The Toyota Cressida that Mandela and Winnie gets into on that footage, belonged to Dr Maponya...and he is seen there driving them away. Mandela stayed with the Maponyas for a while after his release... The road that you guys were driving on passing next to Bara hospital.. is only +-10 km long... And there is a military base, the biggest hospital in the continent, two clinics, a taxi rank, 3 malls, a university, about ten petrol stations _ so it's like a petrol station in every kilometers, SARS,sassa,DHA, Eskom... A high school, a primary school, a police station... All this on one 10 km road That's one of the busiest street in soweto... I know Liv Kenya loves churches... Right opposite Baragwanath hospital, there is a church as big as a shopping center ( universal church)... Right down the road towards Rockville, there is Reginah mondi... That one has a lot of history which I'm not aware of but I always see tourists going there... Than again in Chiawelo there is another small but old church still on the same street and this church in Chiawelo is like 5 min away from the primary school where Cyril Ramaphosa went to as a child.
