Her own Dad is a left of centre academic, she started off representing the Lib Dems. What the hell has happened to her to arrive at the state she's in?She's a total laughing stock. Sometimes I wonder if she actually realises this, but maybe her refusal to do the 'celeb' circuit is an indication that maybe someone has told her she'll be even more of a laughing stock. It's not just her- Kwarteng is doing the circuit, very prominent on election night, He too has no shame and doesn't seem to have any moral compass whatsoever.

I reckon people like Truss are surrounded by people who tell her she's great. It seems to be a common culture, especially within Tory ranks. Cameron and Johnson are surely perfect examples of folk who only hear praise up close in their lives, regardless of how incompetent they may be. I don't think Sunak is that far behind. He was probably the swotty geek, with everyone bigging him up around him...but not realising he is wrapped in cotton wool and and has no real life wisdom to draw on.

In Truss's time, I think it was the legendary Eddie Mair's almost cruel dismantling of her during 'interviews' that I remember the most fondly. She regularly made herself available for the slaughter. Eddie's quiet, sardonic, surgically precise ways with her were a total joy. She seemed unaware of what was happening.

Liz Truss's reaction to Ros Atkins (one of the few decent BBC journalists left) on election night summed her up perfectly. When asked a challenging question, she freezes and goes into a bizarre slow-mo robot mode, her speech, gestures and reactions all really unnatural as if she's desperately trying to remember what some ghoul has tried to teach her to do. She then walked like a ghost (flanked by her equally feckless mob), ignoring Ros's persistent invitation to say something by way of an apology. She has no humility, no natural intelligence- it's utterly embarassing. And she probably doesn't even realise that.

@@starmersbarber YT has a few under 'Ray Alan & Lord Charles'. She just strikes me as a puppet, incapable of independent action, needing to be constantly worked and having others speak through her. Which is a description that fits well with what we know about her having the hots for the Tufton St crew and their pronouncements. Thankfully she cut her strings herself, with a bit of help from Kwarteng.

Now you've got it. Thatcher would never have been elected in Scotland or Rees Mogg. You corrected yourself just in time. If you made the distinction between England and 'the UK' consistently it would be enlightening for your discourses and less alienating for people who otherwise enjoy your stuff. We think we are included until it becomes obvious through these UK means England gaffs that we are an appendage. You would suppose we'd just get used to it but we don't. It jars every time

I think the country does itself a disservice sometimes, we expect so much from our political leaders that we discount many people that may of been good leaders because they have an obvious flaw. This is no endorsement of Truss or anyone else but an observation. Discounting policies and manifestos, we expect our political leaders to be statesmen/women, good orator’s, comfortable on the political and global stage. It’s like charisma matters more than character and that can mean people who want the best for the country but lack charisma will fall short in the eyes of the electorate, over a charismatic person. But we want our leaders to have it all and few have it all and even fewer want to be leaders.

I think this is a good general point - but what's the solution? Human beings have a tendency to be swayed by a plausible person who can project an impressive image - the charm didn't work for me, but is something Johnson has, and I guess Farage's schtick works on the same people who fell for Johnson in a similar way.

One thing affecting bond market is the decision by the US and EU to freeze 300bn in Russian assets. This is affecting bond buying from China who have an agreement with the Japanese who are also selling bonds, and then there is Saudi Arabia who recently announced a warning regarding this in that they are unhappy with the G7's position on the Ukraine conflict. Fortunately the UK is out of the EU now so can make its own policy, but it must be very careful not to mix politics up with finance. If an international investor invests in our markets they must have cast iron certainty that their money is safe. It was why the City rose to such size due to it having a reputation of being disconnected from Westminster. Politicians introduce instability and risk and risk is calculated in every investment decision.

You obviously know nothing about politics and finance anywhere, neither now or in the past. Perhaps if certain people had watched Britain's Second Empire, they might be better informed. We know why certain interests chose London, and I suggest that if you truly understood the emergence of the Eurocurrency Market in the 20th century, the turning away of everyone's eyes was politically and financially convenient. That is no longer the case as greed and corruption has led to turf wars between the greedy and corrupt, involving innocent people. You see it in the failure of certain interests to resist the need for discretion, and succumb to their own paranoid and fragile delusions of grandeur and grandiosity. And ultimately, they control nothing but a growing pile of bones. They're only human after all. They only live once, and truly own nothing but their bones, until nature takes her course, and they too are forgotten. The History of Finance tells us money and power are intimately connected. And authentic history is honest and open about that. To imagine that isn't the case is disingenuous or less informed than they think. But what maintains the functioning political state cannot be so easily bought from so few, when it impacts so many. Not everything is for sale.

No. Kwazi lined his own pockets by sharing the contents of his prodigious package at a dinner with his banker pals the evening before his public presentation enabling his buddies to short the pound and place massive options bets. It wasn't the bankers that brought Truss down it was the international markets' reaction. If she'd survived as PM, UK wouldn't be able to place new debt at rates we could service.
