Liz Truss on Labour 'lies', the Bank of England and the Tory leadership race | The Daily T podcast

Her premiership was the briefest - and one of the most memorable - in British history. Then she was ousted as an MP by the people of South West Norfolk. Now Liz Truss has come out all guns blazing, telling The Daily T she was "not responsible" for mortgages going up after her infamous mini-budget and slamming the "unaccountable" Bank of England.
In an exclusive interview with Camilla and Associate Editor Gordon Rayner, the former PM also reveals why she nearly missed the moment she lost her seat in King’s Lynn and talks about visiting Balmoral just two days before the death of Queen Elizabeth.

She is completely deluded. In the 2022 leadership election, Sunak predicted what would happen if she pursued her economic policy, yet she seems to think that it was everyone's fault but her own. Take some responsibility for your actions! It is also nonsense that candidates who come second don't give a concession speech. Try Michael Portillo or Ed Balls to name just two. Thank goodness she lost her seat.

It's not deluded at all. The only sound economics comes from the libertarians, socialism doesn't have economics. So if she was trying to get the UK off socialism then she is correct. The Bank of England raised interest rates to get rid of her. The Bank of England doesn't want to lose it's power clearly and we are having to pay the price.

CT is perhaps the most lightweight associate editor the DT have ever employed. No sense of impartiality - a simple stooge of the Tory Party. Her abilities can be summed up by her article in early June 2024 "Whisper it, but Rishi Sunak is staging the most remarkable comeback." Right.

If she had got her budget checked by the OBR before announcing it, the markets wouldn't have reacted so badly. She was too arrogant to get it checked by the OBR and decided to rush it through. She should take some responsibility for her actions. Shame on her, deluded beyond belief...also Rishi warned her during the leadership debates, but she didn't listen.

Pay in the public sector firstly has not risen in line with inflation since 2010, which is why recruitment in sectors like nursing or the army is falling or a very big reason. Giving a pay rise to around 2 million people out of a work force of 32 million, is hardly inflationary.

I guess I'll be the only commentor to say I agree with Liz Truss completely. What she tried to do was laudable, and whilst perhaps with greater political and presentational skill her premiership might have survived, there's no doubt that the forces ranged against her were formidable. Thanks for a very good interview.

Agree Simon but i think we'll never know whether her efforts or vision were indeed the best at that time given all the information at that time. I am still unsure whether her radical policies were what this country needed at that particular time and I am sure her decisions will probably come under closer scrutiny a few decades time once ALL the information is disclosed. We all forget however, only months prior to her elevation to PM, sne was negotiating excellent post-brexit deals with the world and was widely praised for her efforts.

Lets be honest none of the Truss budget aims were introduced into any manifesto therefore no market tested reaction, therefore to believe any change within the governments fiscal policies without testing market conditions, or testing attitudes to a minor change instead the Truss policy massively changed fiscal direction without this test and is why the market spiked, sure she knew nothing of LDI’s which caused a bigger effect but it’s irrelevant if she had acted differently the leverage positions on the LDI’s would never have been triggered, which is why it is her fault and she is completely responsible. This is not my view it’s the market’s view which is why the market run was initiated.

I have some sympathy with her views (surprising perhaps from a Labour Party member!) on the Bank of England , the Treasury and Civil Service - they echo ideas that, from a very different political direction obviously, Tony Benn was putting forward in the late 1970s and 1980s. Those institutions would have tried to block genuine socialist policies if we had a Corbyn/McDonnell government - as very nearly happened in 2017.

I had to scroll through the first 3.5mins due to these 3 burks discussing tea ffs....... Once I got past that, I'm even more convinced than ever that this woman was never PM material. How the hell she convinced other so called clever people in her party that she was the man (no pun intended) for the job boggles the mind. UPDATE: I watched up until around 17m but gave up after hearing her completely avoiding questions relating to her taking responsibility. It's all everyone else's fault. And had the cheek to plug her book..... Highly unprofessional and she forgot that she was once a PM, she talked and acted like a low grade office worker with ideas well above her station.
