Shopping for an ebike? Don't make these mistakes. Paul and Liz share ten tips for buying an ebike. Half of the people we meet in campgrounds bought the wrong bike!
Especially now, if you are shopping for an ebike, you will likely have to buy your electric bicycle online. It would be difficult to say the least to return a bike ordered online-- especially if you decide you don't like it after you assemble it. There are some very important things to look out for when buying an ebike including range, watts, and more.

1. Decide road or trail/mountain (where do you want to ride?)
2. Get pedal assist if you want exercise
3. Get throttle-only if you DON'T want exercise
4. Best option: pedal assist AND throttle
5. Know that some places ban ebikes
6. Avoid twist throttle
7. Get enough range
8. If you want to do hills, get 500 watt or more
9. Get a mid-drive motor if you plan to do hills
10. Decide how much you'll use an ebike
11. Weight of an electric bicycle is an important factor
12. Plan on getting a new bike rack, especially for ebikes

To figure out range, multiply volts times amp hours, which will give you watt hours. Then compare watt hours to the size of the motor. That will give you an idea of how far you can go.

Hi John! Fulltime life is not for everyone but it IS the right life for me. Ask yourself how much alone time you need or want, how comfortable are you with uncertainty, how good are you at fixing things? Does life on the road call you? Is it something you think about often? If there is a way you could test out this lifestyle first, then I would recommend that. Or start small and cheap. I started with a camper van. After five months I couldn't take the small space but I knew I loved the RV life so I upsized. There are many many ways to do this life including less travel or even wintering in one place.

Thanks for this video, this was one of the best short videos for potential ebike purchasers to guide them to buy a bike that works for them. I purchased an ebike for my wife 5 years ago, and purchased the wrong bike for her so this video will be very helpful for those that are contemplating a purchase. Even though we are looking for the right bike for my wife she has still enjoyed her bike tremendously. Ebikes are fantastic for people that are not interesting in training all winter so they can enjoy long ride during the biking season.

Great video guys, a lot of great information here. One thing worth noting is the importance of researching an Ebike that will match your height. The multiple frame, wheel, and tire sizes should be a determining factor on which bike you should get, especially if that model is not available in different frame sizes. Seat post adjustment is one thing that helps, but that doesn’t remedy the situation completely since E bikes are using larger wheels and the popular fat tires. Love your videos, have fun out there!

As a noob considering my first E bike I found this very informative. I've also been a serious road cyclist and I originally questioned the validity of Ebikes. Yet there were times--many times--I found myself thinking, "I wish this thing had a motor"! So what it comes down to for me is that Bikes seem like a lot more fun than a regular pedal bike. E-bikes are great! I used mine to travel to work for 5 years where each day was a 25 miles round trip. Over the 5 years I travelled the equivalent of around the world! It kept me fitter and saved a ton of money in petrol and car costs. My e-bike had a twist throttle, as well as pedal assist, which was great for quick getaways from junctions and traffic lights, etc, I never had a problem with twisting it by accident. My e-bike was a relatively cheap generic chinese bike with a rear wheel hub motor. The quality was not up to german standards but then maintenance and parts were cheaper! Love my Ebike. We bought the right ones the first time fortunately. We have the electric Veego folding Fat Tire bikes from Ridescoozy - 500w 13ah is plenty of power for us. Paid only about $1500 ea. Has pedal assist on and off so we can just pedal if we want to. We have the twist throttle and have had no problems and no issues regarding the bike taking off if touched. Probably a general warning given on the video on the off chance it could happen, but I find I would really have to twist that throttle on purpose for any movement but then again I don't turn my assist on until I'm seated on the bike. Maybe mine has some safety feature I'm not aware of. Anyway, I love everything about our bikes. We've used them everywhere, love the welded racks on the frames and the fun colors. Came fully assembled and Jason and Ronda gave excellent customer service. Jason tests out all the bikes before the white glove delivery. All we had to do was to put on the pedals. It's been 100% fun for us with zero problems. That was 9 months ago. Great so far!

Hi Sue! That's an awesome review! And what a great deal you got. I started shopping in October and I noticed prices inching upward. And glad to hear that you've had no problem with the twist throttle. I think they must have a safety feature or a better designed throttle. I test rode a $4000 Pedago with the twist throttle. Besides being so heavy that I couldn't keep it upright, that twist throttle seemed out to get me. And then I broke my hand during the test ride! Could NOT wait to get that thing back to the bike shop! Happy riding! I hope you've been able to get outside and enjoy that during all this time. Thanks for the great video! Started cycling many decades ago. My first race (which I won) was in the Spring of 1971. Back then I was all about speed. Now it's all about speed and range. I live high in the mountains and its a long distance to civilization. Your video was a wonderful assist for me to get the proper bike. Good comment on getting a certified rack. No, you can't "slide-by" with a non-certified rack. I saw a guy dump his bikes at 70 mph. If you plan to only move the bikes once and not see a need for the expense of a certified rack, then only plan to dump your bike once. Don't be cheap. Great information without a bias toward any particular bike. I've been Jonesing for an e-bike (I have a teardrop trailer and belong to a couple of camping groups) for more than a year, and I keep learning more and more about what to look for. You confirmed what I had decided about wattage. I live in Colorado, and had decided I really need to have 500 or more watts. I also knew early on to get the lightest bike I can get that still has the features I want. My limitation is money, so I'll have to find a compromise that I can live with! That battery thing is tricky and needs some study. Can be dangerous but is do able. I would suggest doing some math first. It might be better to just buy an e-bike. I own a Trek Verve e-bike (love it!) and two major consideration before purchasing are repairs and warranty. When your motor, display or battery need repairing or replaced where are you going to take it? What’s covered under the warranty? The batteries alone can cost up to $500. Trek has an excellent warranty and ubiquitous stores. Buying an e-bikes on-line from a company with no physical store was a sticking point for me. And I can almost guarantee many of these companies won’t be around a few years from now. Ask before you buy.

Those are excellent points! If you are going to buy an ebike online, we recommend calling your local bike shop to see if they will service it. It's true that it is much better to test ride a bike in person versus buying online. However, the savings online can be pretty tempting! Enjoy your Verve!

Thanks, Very informative and entertaining even to an 80 year old that's on his 3rd e-bike. My wife and I got rid of one car and I now use my e-bike to do all sorts of local shopping as well as ride every Sunday 30 mile round trip with friends with whom I'e been riding with for 40 years, I'm the only one in a group of 7 or so with an e-bike, oldest rider is 85. One point of contention with your assessment of 250 watt motor is, that for me, whose, terrain is mostly flat, with some hills thrown in, a 250 watt front hub kit with a 36V, 9 amph battery is more than adequate to give me all the assistance and mileage i need. I converted a Specialized Sirrus carbon fiber hybrid bike with a Swytch kit and I love it, most of the time I'm in level 1 or 2 assistance mode and can outpace my friends, all in great shape, all riding hi-tech bikes. I chose a 250 watt kit after doing a lot of research and found it to be cost effective and light. Thanks again for a great video but don't knock a 250 watt motor.

Hi Peter. You are right! If you don't need assist up hills (or don't have hills near you) then a 250W is just fine. In fact, 250W is all that's legal in Europe. All it means is you'll be doing more of the work going uphill. Glad to hear you are enjoying your ebike. After my experience with ebikes, the first question I would ask is how expensive is a replacement battery. I bought an inexpensive ebike from Walmart about 10 years ago and was very happy. The bike did everything I wanted and was a joy to ride. It cost somewhere around 800-900 dollars. However after about 100-200 miles of use the battery kept dying sooner and sooner until it wouldn't last one ride. I rode it 10 miles a day, 2 days a week to work and back and charged it after each use. It turned out that when I bought the bike I should have drained the battery down all the way and recharged it a few times so the battery wouldn't develop a memory. This was not in the instructions in the owner's manual; it was a reply to a customer question and I didn't see it until the problem had already occurred. When it happened I thought no big deal, just buy a new battery. Then I found out the battery cost $500.00. That's more than half the cost of the bike! That was a little too much for me. So buyers beware.

I live in the Midwest and I think what I'd call a hill is what others would call an incline, so it makes it tough for me to know how well a bike will work in my neighborhood.

Yes, that's a good point, thank you. Since I'm from Kentucky I totally get it. That's I mentioned the "Rice-a-Roni hill" that the 250W motor ebike could not climb. Great video guys! I’ve thought about getting into an ebike for a while now but have not made the jump yet since it seems a little overwhelming with all different styles, power, configurations, etc. You video is amazing and has helped me a bunch. Just curious though if you have a ebike company preference? Liz, it looks like you do. Paul...?

Hi Maarten, great question and yes it is a little overwhelming. I'm thinking it might require a second video to really answer it thoroughly but I'll tell you about our bikes. Liz's Luna X1 Enduro has a ton of power and a lot of high end components, and even though it wasn't cheap I think it's a lot of bike for the money. My Juiced Cross Current X is a mid priced touring/commuter bike that at time of purchase had the biggest battery (longest range) available on a production bike (52v 19.2AH). I think this might still be the case but I'm not 100% sure. I know there are larger batteries available but I don't think they're available on any of the mid-priced bikes out there. In a perfect situation I'd have at least two bikes for each of us but since we're full-timer's and have a limited amount of space (and money 🥴) we had to compromise and go with bikes that fit 70% of our individual needs. Hi Maarten! I'd have to say neither of of is overjoyed with Luna or Juiced. The Luna readout is just about impossible to read for battery percentage and distance. Also, Paul had to make modifications to mine (switching out to a bigger sprocket, and adjusting the derailleur) for it to be rideable. On the Juiced, Paul changed the battery connection as it wasn't robust enough to handle repeated use.

My partner and I just bought our first e-bikes. I was hesitant to get an e-bike because I wanted to not rely on the throttle...didn’t know about pedal assist. Thank you for the video, definitely helped in making the purchase!

Thank you so much! I've been riding bikes for over 60 years, and it has always been one of the great joys of my life (at the age of 45 I rode 200 miles from Albany, N.Y. to The Bronx in 23 hours!). However, at 69 time is finally catching up with me. A good E-Bike would be the answer to a prayer. Now that I've watched this video I feel that I can make an intelligent selection. I can't wait to get back on the road! Keep up the good work!

I have a Specialized 2019 COMO & just love it . ! I looked for a long time and road lot's of E-bikes , Specialized makes the best E-bike IMO . They are worth the money IMO !!

I second the Specialized e-bike, I have a 2019 Turbo Vado 3.0 and love it, Specialized is closest of all e-bikes to the feel of riding a pedal bike with the quietest/smoothest motor available. Just be a lot more diligent about chain maintenance with any mid-drive e-bike and try to keep your battery between 20% and 80% charge for longest battery life (applies to all makes and models of e-bike).

Totally disagree! On my 2nd Turbo Vado 4.0 after the frame on the 1st one cracked. Has happened to loads of them. Lots of other build quality issues too including the wheels falling apart both on my original one and the brand new replacement. There are plenty of stunning eBikes available without needing to go near Specialized.

A lot of them now have both. You can use the throttle from a stop and keep the assist on low.
