Naw that was the dad. Father kestrels will catch food and try to feed their babies, but they don’t really know how to do it. If something ever happens to the mother, more often then not the babies will starve while being surrounded by food. The prey needs to be small or torn apart for the babies to eat. There was only one recorded instant (that I know of) when a single father figured out how to feed his chicks. (You can see this on Robert E Fuller’s KZbin.)
