Origin of the Name - Lizard Skins: "There were two original founders, myself and Lance Larson. Lance sold out to me in 2001. Lance's brother was working on a project for a college class that involved creating a name and a logo for a company. He came up with the name Lizard Skins and the original yin and yang style logo. He didn't have any actual company in mind when he created the name and logo he just thought it would be a cool name and catchy logo. Not sure how well he did on the assignment but I would give him an "A" if I were the teacher. After about one year, Lance asked if he could use the name and logo for a company. Lance's brother said 'sure'."
Company Beginnings: "It was extremely small. When we started, we could fit the entire business on one table. Our first ad was a twelfth page for Mountain Bike Action magazine. We had to race to FedEx to get it sent out and barely met the deadline for it. We immediately started receiving calls from the ad before we were even really ready to take them. If we had missed that ad deadline, Lizard Skins might have never taken off."

I did it WITHOUT stretching it, and it started to come up and separate in the curves after a while. I unwrapped it, and re-wrapped it tight stretching slightly, and never had a problem after. I always stretch it just slightly in the curves around the drops. I love the feel if this on my bars.

See Calvin Jones's (from Park) method for taping. It results in the preferred rotation of tape on the top section and less bulky overlap around the levers than the figure 8 method. And BTW, DSP tape really is THE BEST! --Bicycle Bob

Why would you do a figure 8 if you already have the covering strip????
@jamesy1955
@jamesy1955 6 жыл бұрын
bakerfly305 I don't do a figure of eight when wrapping my bars, and I don't use the clamp covering strip either. I just take my time until I get it right, even if that means unwrapping back a few turns occasionally and going over again. Tension keeps the tape in place and electrical tape at the finish. Admittedly, the finishing strips do give a nice cover at the end. 👍

I was always told to wrap away or towards the outside of the bars as your hands naturally want to grip and twist to the outside as you are riding. If you wrap to the inside that would tend to want to unravel the tape ( with the modern sticky tape this is probably not going to happen either way ). Also it seems unnecessary to use the clamp strip and the figure 8 both at the same time, just creates a lot of bulk at the levers. Have you ever had a tape that was so sticky that when came time to remove it came off in chunks and pieces.

Because sometimes when you use a product you want to see how to correctly mount it and its subtilities and there is always a chance of learning something new. this video is not good because you will think this is the correct way of doing it. This is NOT. Wrong technique and bad execution. Go watch park tool video, you will see how it looks like when correctly done and lots of tips to do it better and easier. As a bike mech the tape posing is the first thing i watch to know if someone is conscientious at his job because you dont need to be a pro to do it well but if you are patient you can do it beautifully.

Thanks for the DSP application.I heard that you have to be a bit more careful; not the usual stretching in the wrap w of other synthetic tapes. Do use the small piece to cover the lever clamp (cut so covering just the clamp, none of the body -to prevent bumps under the hood. Finally, by using the extra piece, you avoid the "figure eight" around the lever, it is far too thick as you can clearly see. There is no reason to ultimately misshapen the lever hood over such bulging & a mass of wrap.

IDK about the 2.5 but the 3.2 was not long enough to cover 44cm bars without a tad bit of stretching. I also want to know how to keep the end caps from popping out of the bars. Finished my build took a break for about 10mins and the caps were on the floor, they will not stay for nothing. Looks like I will have to buy some screw on caps. If you buy this tape go ahead and get some. Expensive tape that feels great but the 2 minor problems makes you think WTF was I thinking.

Hey buddy. I have been a bike mech for almost 16 years in australia. When i wrap tape, i dont overhang the tape at the bottom for the plug.. i actually wrap it flush with the end of the bar, carefully overlapping underneath. I use double sided tape and wrap it around the end of the bar so that the tape sits there nice n tight whilst i finish off wrapping to the top of the bars. All my customers are "wrapped" with my method. It never comes undone and you dont get the bulging end cap. I usually wrap the bar plug with electrical tape to buffer it out so it sits nice n securely in the hbar. Hope this helps. If i knew how to upload a vid and could make a decent tutorial, i would make a video.. mayb i could look into that.

It went together easily in less than an hour. kzbin.infoUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Make sure the front fork is forward or the pedals will hit the front tire. Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.

i found it helps a lot with slippery non-adhesive tape, to have a layer of thin adhesive fabric tape or cut open inner tube underneath. or what ever you can find. :D (i like adding a bit of thickness and bulge to the grip-positions at the top and on the drops, with cheap fabric grip tape underneath the outer wrap)

Why shouldn't you stretch the tape? Are you just worried about people breaking it? I've generally found the tighter you stretch the tape - without breaking it - the longer it will hold its place and last. And to compensate for thinning the padding by stretching it, just wrap the tape spacing closer together to make it thicker.

Scott Lum - I agree. I'm sure the production cost of a pair of wraps is mere cents on the dollar. Is the market that competitive for bar wrap they need to try and save a few cents? I think it should be common place for manufacturers to actually list the tape length on the packaging. It's funny, because the wrap a lot of pro WorldTour cycling teams get from sponsors (comes bulk packaged) tends to be longer than the stuff consumers can buy.
