Ive come back and watched this video 3 times just to reinforce what you are saying and keep myself motivated while raising my 10 month old GSD. My favorite is when people first came over when I got my pup they would “advise” me to keep the dog out of the crate so he would “learn” how to behave in the house. I stuck strong and kept doing as you say which has always made the most sense to me and now those same people are talk about how impressive my puppy is at 10 months and almost 90lbs. Never an accident, no chewed shoes, no damaged furniture. I’ve raised this puppy side by side with my 3 year old Who can give commands and throw a ball with a puppy more then double his weight because the dog was never given the option to think anything other then what is. It’s been a joy raising this puppy which is a stark contrast to the experience of pretty much every person I know.

I have an 11 yo not spayed and never bred. She's very healthy. She is slim and has good muscle tone. Never an illness or injury and she runs a lot. I think risk of pyo is minimal compared to other illness and loss of muscle induced by loosing hormones being spayed.
@Rietto4 жыл бұрын
If Pyo was a major health risk, dogs would be extinct. If intact bitches are getting pyo left and right, then the real problem isn't the existence of a reproductive tract, it's something genetic. Just preemptively cutting out healthy organs 'in case' is people being in denial. S/N is nowhere near normal in Europe, for instance, and are they losing dogs all over the place? No. S/N every dog was originally put forth as population control, not for health. Now that shelter overpopulation has tanked since the 1980s, AR-types are grasping at straws to keep pushing it.

I first listened to Larry Krohn in his conversation with Ivan B. I noticed he did not explain well regarding his theory of "conditioning" for e-collar. Ivan was like a lawyer. The answer should have been simple; that "conditioning" is simply teaching the dog how to turn off stim using gentle stim. Now I'm listening to Larry Krohn playlists any time I'm at home.

I absolutely love your principles about training a dog-We just got a Lab puppy, watch him like a hawk, invest my time completely with him. No couch, no bed, will crate him till he is atleast a year old. My question is , although we all watch him every minute when has the freedom, it does happen that he gets hold of the paper roll in the sink cabinet and tries to pull this, same with shoes/socks. It happens in a fraction of a second. Otherwise he is a pretty chill dude, no biting, no nipping, no furniture chewing, and understands all basic commands. What do i do?- do i just redirect him and then praise him? do i give him a verbal reprimand?- I believe is balanced training- Very grateful for your channel

while i am thankful for the amount of useful information, i think it's unfair to tell people they are abusing their dogs with their selfishness when exchanging too much affection. not everyone is lucky enough to have a loving family. for some people their pet is their only loving relationship, and it would be nice if you considered that when speaking in broad general terms. thank you for all the good notes.

I’m depressed..my puppy is 9-10 weeks and acts like a crotchety old man! (And that’s my job…) No affection, could care less about fetching anything other than a stick or leaf he plans to try to eat, if I let him out of the kennel in the living room he instantly tries to destroy. Using food I can train sit, he follows my hand for down, and I can get eye contact if I remind him, we worked on place today but I don’t think he gets it. My problem is biting..I tried twice today to hold him down by the scruff and his body, he screams and screams, then gets up like nothing happened and sulks. I’ve really busted my behind for this little guy, and I feel like he just thinks I’m his captor. He came from a litter of 11, I felt bad for his separation, so I slept by his kennel the first three nights, after that he could hear me in my bedroom from the living room and slept through the nights, except the occasional 3am pee break, and fairly consistent 5am wake up has me physically and mentally exhausted. I tried to get him to play in my backyard after what little training I’m doing for some sort of bonding, I just don’t understand why this puppy acts the way he does..I’m signed up for all star or star puppy course in a few days, maybe I’ll get some insight. If he’s distracted he likes a belly rub, but when he realizes you’re petting or touching him, the biting starts up again. I guess my expectations are not matching reality, and now I’m afraid I’ll never have a good relationship..

So true about cities over burbs. I had so many rescue organizations practically run the other way when I told them I lived in an apt. Right, so physically taking my dog out every few hours to go potty, almost daily car rides to go hiking in the forest or walking 5 blocks to the beach...EVERY day was beyond their comprehension.

By the way when I walk my dog out in public or I'm out in the park with him I carry a can of dog mace clipped on my belt just for the reason that you're talking about one time I was in my garage and there was a loose pitbull in the neighborhood and he shot in my garage and the next thing there was a dogfight in my garage we broke it up and I told the guy you need to get control of your dog I'm not going to lie but my dog got into that Pitbull pretty good but that's besides the point I recommend people keep a small can of dog mace on their belt clip cuz I guarantee a one day you will need it when a dog comes charging at you and your dog

Do any of the treats, wet food, or dry food have rosemary in it? A friend of mine has a Springer with epilepsy. She never thought to check the ingredients of the shampoo. Had rosemary in it and sent the dog into a grand mal seizure. She can't even bring white pizza into the house because of the rosemary. There are other ingredients, but just a thought. Thank you for sharing your thoughts! Very informative as always. One question: We have a 4 months old pug and she recently started barking. She barks in her pen when she wants to come out. This is after walk and play time when I actually want her to calm down and spend some time alone. From the pen she has access to the balcony. We live in an apartment so I can’t ignore her and let her bark forever. What’s the best way to stop the barking and get her to understand that is not an acceptable behaviour? Thank you
@tyrander16524 жыл бұрын
It is sometimes suggested to train the dog to bark on command and use that to then train a command to stop barking. Also, there is a You Tube Leerburg video on calming a dog that loves to bark titled Teach Your Dog to Be QUIET!

if a 9 week old puppy is out of crate on a house line and does something for a moment that is undesirable (brief chew), what is an acceptable correction? do you just say "no" or "uh uh?" Thank you! I love your content so much!
@cazzooo6qss3 жыл бұрын
Well It's a 9 week old puppy it's going to chew things with that being said you should just redirect your puppy in most cases. To answer the no/uhuh, "no" is a negative marker always followed up with a correction just like your positive marker is always followed up with a reward! "uh - uh" is simply a way of telling your dog not the right choice and to try again witch is really important that they learn to try again and again until they get it right then it's marked and rewarded, there's alot more to it then that but I hope that helps a bit..

When I got my doberman puppy he was about 3 months old from day one I would constantly take him out when he woke up after play time I would praise him whenever he peed and pooped and I swear to God this dog got house trained so fast I could not believe it I think he may have had one or two two accidents in the house but other than that that was about it I would say by the time he was 5 months old he was completely house-trained I did keep him in the crate for about a week and then I started to leave the crate open and to my surprise he did not get into anything he did not pee or poop in the house I was totally amazed my dog is 4 and 1/2 years old I have probably took him to this outside mall hundreds of times around all types of noises people walking you name it he behaves very well around people I do not let people pet him because he is not pet friendly but other than that he does not bother anybody when nobody is home my dog has free roam of the house and I'm okay with that because I know he will not get into anything and if somebody should break into house I guarantee you he will do his job I have an e-collar train he knows the leave it command he's a very good dog he's a little bit aggressive against strangers other than that I really don't have a complaint recently he was in the park where I take him every day running and he stepped on some glass and got 40 stitches I cannot believe the dog did not even Yelp after he got cut he acted like nothing happened I picked him up and rushed him to the vet which was less than a half a mile away. I'm not bragging Larry but this dog probably has a much better life than most dogs he is always with me when I'm home he's always in the car with me he goes everywhere Home Depot we going to the beach everywhere we do everything together this is the problem with most people they don't spend enough time with their dogs in my opinion my dog is intact I do not believe in spay or neuter if you're responsible with your pet I don't see the need for this also I have heard it spin shorten a dog's life and cause more problems so I rather leave a dog in Tack just my opinion

Omg. We’re the people that got two male GS pups from a lady off FB who had an 11 litter. No we didn’t think to do research and went to vet yesterday to find out the back legs have hocks inward so to expect trouble. We’ve taken them to board and train for two weeks each and they did ok. They put them in prong. Now they want to ECollar them since they just don’t listen. I try but it’s me. I watch all these videos and I need help. I want to keep these pups but do what I need to but it’s overwhelming to know. I also have to keep them separated due to Littermate syndrome which we didn’t know about. I guess we’re just some of those stupid people but we’re trying as we truly want what’s best for the pups. It’s so hard!! They will be 5 months on Christmas. If we could do it again we’d not do this to us or the pups. The FB lady should not breed and we should have known to do research but it’s too late. Thanks for the videos. We’ll get ecollars and see what we can do now. Ugh

Another great discussion as always, good topics! Thanks for mentioning GSDs ...Ive dedicated my life to the breed and seeing them being surrendered and euthanized in shelters across the USA is absolutely heartbreaking.Most immediately get tagged Rescue Only ,and get put down, for behavoural issues caused by the owners, Its so sad to see .Hopefully more people will start watching your videos..I've told many people on the GSD sites about you !! Putting out these videos is very much appreciated by all us people in rescue....THANK YOU!! When will you know which pup??..... if youre not sick of D names ,.... here's a few more !. I was a breeder in the 80s and 90s and even tho we called the litters by letters, It was just for their CKC or AKC Registered names,...call names could be different and start with whatever letter the owners ,but maybe youre breeders different, ''Ditto'' ''Doc'' ''Dawson'' ''Dakota'' '''Dagger'' '' Dude '' ''Dylan''

@leonorf27304 жыл бұрын
The LAT(Look at That) - technique never failed me. Other methods would work too, I'm no FF fanatic, but LAT can be a very elegant fix, and clickers are such fun tools to use.
@avrilbaker33434 жыл бұрын
Leonor F thank you for the reply, I have been working with her and has improved so much, especially in one of Larry’s recent videos he said he popped the collar when the dog started stressing and about to bark and that has calmed her down so much. Thanks again
@avrilbaker33434 жыл бұрын
Leonor F how would you use the lat technique
@leonorf27304 жыл бұрын
@@avrilbaker3343 I would use a clicker and treats (I know, I know, swearing in church...) and make sure to keep a distance from the trigger that the dog was still somewhat comfortable with. The first thing to do is to "load the clicker". I like to train a simple behaviour like a hand touch, they get the "click sound=that thing I did right then was correct and earned me food" concept very very fast. Then to use the clicker for LAT: Whenever the dog looks at the trigger(other dog), I click and treat. Just for looking. After enough successful repetitions you get to the turning point: your dog spots another dog and automatically looks at you like "Hey, where is my treat?". The mindset has changed. Now you begin clicking/rewarding for looking at YOU when they spot another dog. After that behaviour is established, you begin waiting a second between looking and clicking/rewarding. Then two seconds. Then three. Then you can begin decreasing the distance to the trigger. Eventually you will have a dog who sees other dogs and takes it as a cue to make eye contact with you and heel as you pass them. At this point you start slowly and randomly fading the rewards. (If the dog is better motivated by other types of reward, experiment accordingly) E-collars and prongs are super illegal where I live. If they weren't, would I swear by LAT? Who knows. But I have used it many many times and it does work perfectly well. Also, I know some people don't like clickers and make a big deal out of exclusively use a marker word, but personally I find that putting a clicker in someone's hand really sharpens them up and makes them think more about what they are doing. The winning move, of course, is just to condition both. You always have your voice with you, but it is easier to do get the finicky timing-dependent stuff right with a clicker. It is a neat little tool, and a lot of balanced trainers are missing out by turning their noses up at it. Lastly, remember: slow is smooth, and smooth is fast. If you take your time and minimise your chances of massive setbacks, this process can move quite quickly. Is this what Larry would do? Probably not. But he has the benefit of being an excellent dog trainer, unlike us. So until he gives you the better answer, give LAT a try. What this method has going for it is that it is near idiot proof. Take it from this idiot.

I feel like half of that discussion is missing and it's not in the best interest to label it as abuse and passively imply who people do this are animal abusers. Some honestly don't know better and we're all here trying to help them and not insult them. I know you like to be honest and keep it real, and that's why I do like listening to you, but I feel like the word abuse was just misused.
