This podcast was absolutely genius, just genius. I am novice dog owner and have a Bernedoodle and my breeder who is also a trainer recommended your videos. She also cautioned against focusing solely on training classes that teach the dog obediene and how to do certain tasks. She said the most important element is how the dog behaves with you and in your home. It took me a minute to understand this but I think many in like me in the novice category confuse obediencde for "good behavior." My breeders caution and your vidoes have put me on the right path. Thank you for this video - it is amazing.

I listened to this entire video while cooking supper tonight. I’ve listened to you many, many times. I can honestly say that between your comments in the beginning of the video to your answers to questions asked, I came away with some serious “gold nuggets”. I have a Pitbull/Great Pyrenees mix (2 years old) and I have to keep him in check constantly although I enjoy the heck outta working (blood trailing wounded game) with him. I always think I’m too hard on him but I realize that that is just not possible with him. About a month ago he started chewing up his bed (he sleeps beside me on a leash attached to the foot of my bed since he was a puppy. He never runs loose in my house) and I reprimanded him a couple of times and he flipped me off so I calmly got up, took his bed away and put it just out of his reach for 3 weeks. I gave it back a week ago....no more chewing on his bed. He HAS to have structure! He ain’t no dummy. Thank you for putting this info out there! It could save countless dogs AND owners a lot of misery!

What you said at 1:12:00 about GSD and Border Collies self mutilating is on point in my opinion. I have a well bred working B.C. and I train him and play with him A LOT as I got him on purpose to do dog sport. If my dog wants to work & play in the evening he will chase his tail and rip mouth fulls of fur off his tail and lick his legs. Some comands and put him in the crate helps him switch off and relax and get out of that mindset. In my opinion even the highest drive dogs can be satisfied with a 20 min play/obedience session twice per day, chase and catch or possession games, if not there will be little things like you said start to happen. Walks are NEVER enough for a high drive dog, these dogs are faster and fitter than any human we cannot fulfill them by just walking them.

We’ve owned a few GSD’s and currently a 6 month old. I can tell you these dogs are NOT for everyone. At the 6 month age you’ll swear they’re possessed. These dogs are super smart and will manipulate their owners without you even knowing it. They need a lot of work, all the time. A loose leash walk every day. We do give him the freedom of a dog door when away, it’s closed when we’re home. Everything our dog gets is from us and he has to give us full attention to get it. We’ve had really good luck and turned out some awesome dogs. I still learn things every day and only listen to a handful of people. The honest passion I get here is just what I need sometimes.

This is great information/insight sir absolutely true. I've said this to my managers at Sit Means Sit and caused a lot of friction with them and the owner. These people were training for years and I came in with my personal experience and research with my own dogs, able to train, lay down with, touch sensitive areas on "aggressive dogs" that these people wouldn't touch without a muzzle or catch pole. They were amazed that my dogs could sit on a damn place cot all day without actual training, like that was really proving something. My dogs are pack members that have rules to follow like "don't walk around like you own the house and go lay on your bed". It was ridiculous but thanks to dog people like you and Cesar Milan teaching about relationships with dogs and the dumb shit average people do that makes there dogs worse, I am able to be the dog trainer that I consider myself. Keep at it man, you're helping somebody.

This video really hit me. I've followed a lot of your advice and actually think I have a great dog. The comments on love being a drug, and I'm excessively loving her for my benefit not hers... really made me step back. Glad I came to my senses. Knowing we can get better with these changes is a welcome surprise.

@Larry, I've been following you over a year and I truly appreciate and respect you. I have seen other trainer's and instantly said no way. You have a very special love for what you do and for each dog. I had a friend asking questions on how I did certain things like potty training. I'm sending her your link to your YT & FB. She has a love for pits and being I am so leary of pits I know she's going to be able to find everything she needs going back to all of the videos you have put out for us. I do still want, need to get with you one on one with my girls. I really just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate you and the work you do and the work you do putting these videos out for all of us. But seriously you are the only person I watch, I fully trust 100% and you never used abusive manners to teach our fur babies. Just know how much you really are appreciate you. Thank you.

So right Larry in the pet dog world it is a disaster. Everything MUST come from the owner/handler. People need to listen to this. I always put a lead/leash on pups to go toilet. I think people see highly trained dogs on the Web and for some crazy reason that these dogs come ready made. They do not understand it takes work in the house with boundaries, behaviour then training. Things must be structured. I've seen it , a dog peeing on its owners leg ...sigh. I said I would help but I got " I don't want to change his personality"... errr what??? The dog also charges the Tele when animals are on a show. It barks non stop in the car. It would be so easy to fix, if only the owner wanted to . Great chat Larry. Thank you . What I love is that , like me you are still prepared to keep learning . No arrogance : ) Agree there are 4 types. Well said. Border Collies are well known of self mutilation. They need to work, lots of structure, physical and mental stimulus every day come rain or shine. I agree the intelligent breeds can really suffer when not fulfilled with work. My dog comes first . She works 24 hours ads my Service dog, least I can do is give her what she needs . Thanks again Larry. Wish you did more of these : )

I grow up with labs and as adult I got my own dog. I now realize that I didn’t know anything about dogs at that time more than food and walks. 3 years ago I got a totally new breed, a Cane Corso and I started to absorb all I could about dogs. I love this new world with dogs and to keep on learning from you Larry.

Same. I owned several dogs and got my fist cane corso. It kinda of hits youbwhen you bring it home what a huge responsibility you have to the dog and you start learning everything you can and work harder with that dog than you've ever worked. You dont want to see your corso become another statistic

I wish I had seen this 2 years ago when it first came out, but I'm very appreciative regardless. I'm one of those people who has taken my dog to numerous obedience classes just so he could see and experience other dogs as he is leash aggressive toward dogs he doesn't know. After watching this video I realize there are many things that I probably did to make him leash aggressive. But thanks to videos like this I have improved over the years, as has he. Thank you for being honest and telling me things that no other trainer has bothered to explain.

@Jen D. It is amazing how many people with dogs don't understand basic body language. Even without learning formally if you watch how can you not understand the basics? Dogs tell you everything they feel and thus what is likely to happen. We are now even lucky enough to be able to avoid problems and find solutions here too. I have lived dog all my life and always learn more from here. A big thanks to the balanced trainers who share their experience!

I fixed my puppies car fear/chasing reactions to other dogs and people by getting ihm on a heel (not focused) which is very very strong now and correcting him on the e collar not for lunging or being reactive but by correcting him for breaking his heel. I could see it on his face when a car drives by and he starts getting nervous but held his heel and the car goes past he looked all confused, like 'What? nothing bad happened here' from that point on he became less nervous/reactive and now he is blady perfect.

Hi Larry, thank you so much for this informative video, today a huge fight broke out between my dogs regarding food. Luckily there no blood drawn but it was pretty scary breaking up their fight. And after listening to your videos I’ve realized that I’ve been encouraging the new 8 month old dog some behaviors with my older dog which I had for 2 years. So now from today I’m trying to control the younger dog movement like putting her on a leash in the house, I’ll try it out for 4 days cage abc leash and to see a positive change her behavior.

I just bought your book last week and found you on KZbin because of reading your book. The e-collars arrived yesterday. I have two Border Collies. One is 4.5 and a half brother who is 10 months. The 10 month old is having issues with other dogs. He is fine with us, but he starts dogs fights with his brother a couple times a day. I need to nip this. He is a sweet dog, but we do take out dogs out and this needs to be nipped. However, in the car he is an angel and the other one goes crazy!

I am a novice dog owner with a boxer. I don't fully understand how to build a foundation of respect and communication. My 15 month old boxer is so easily distracted and then gets hyper focused on cats, dogs, vehicles, etc. When it is a structured walk ( just him and me) he is well behaved and enjoyable for both of us. But if we have another person or another dog. It gets to be a mess. No focus. I know I'm doing something wrong (probably a lot of things). You say work on the foundation but I'm unclear on what that means.

Need to proof the commands he knows on structured walk. Add other person for 2 minutes, 10 ft apart. Next time 10 min, 10 feet apart. If gets messy go back to the 2 min interaction at 10 feet. Gradually increase the contact time keeping the distance the same. Then, keep the time the same & start decreasing the space between you & other person.

Love what you said about there is no one style of training! Balance is static, positive only is unrealistic in this world. Every method has to be about the individual. That is Wholistic... be flexible, aware, present and able to adapt to the needs of the dog and the individual who lives with that dog.

Not just pet dog world! I was visiting a schutzhund club for the first time. These people had titled many dogs. The one lady had a mal inside the ring and we 6 or so were on the outside. She asked us to talk to her mal and help her get acquainted with ‘crowds’. As I bent over the tall fence just enough to see her, she LAUNCHED herself at my face. Think Shamu coming up out of the water. All teeth and growl. This was NOT a friendly dog-in that moment at least. I was SOOO glad the fence was between us. I was shaking. I was mauled by a shepherd when I was 6. Grabbed and drug 40 feet down a steep hill. But I own shepherds now! I am not projecting fear. I asked the other trainers if I did something to trigger her. They said absolutely not and the dog lost working privileges for that day. Lucky I still had a face. I can’t help but think this was not the first time this mal went nuts with aggression. But she’s still working it in public.

We assume that this is what happened with the dutchie that we just adopted. He came to us not knowing a down command at the age of 1. Taught him all his basics in just 2 weeks (not to a perfect or high level), and he absolutely loves to work and they didn't do a damn thing. Now, we are having to deal with reactivity and frustration tolerance that could have easily been prevented if they did the right work with him. I find myself pissed off every single day at them for doing this to him. Thank you for educating people on this matter.

I knew I was lack compared to competition dogs.... but I realized there are way worst people out there that are just unbelievable. Even the family wolf dog was no where near as bad as these dogs. live with people now the say how bad and how aggressive the ecollars are but they have fed 2 dogs to their deaths with human food, 3rd dog has diabetes and still they feed him human food. 3 dogs have ran away and been hit by a car. Yet trained dogs are the ones abused.

Mr. Krohn I wish you offered your services here in Mexico. People see how well my dogs behave and the pet owners want me to help them with theirs. I can't. I've never dealt with their kind of problems. Dog brutality here with top level competition trainers and their outrageously expensive dogs is sickening. The common approach is; "if the dog isn't doing it, it's because he's being defiant, let's beat the crap out of him". That is so rarely the case. Usually they did a lousy job teaching the exercise and the dog doesn't really understand what's being asked of him. Here machismo makes things even worse. They watch my dogs do perfect retrieves, perfect stays but no Way will they ask my advice. One has a nice dog but he is a non stop whiner on his down stays. For 2 years now he's tried to correct the problem by frying him with e-collar. No way will they ask me because I'm a woman, I'm American, and I'm a good bit older than they are. Not to brag but I had some very nice multiple Hi in Trial obedience awards, placements at National Championships. Not number one by any means, but you know I secretly took his wife aside. She has a beautiful working shepherd and she was headed down the same road. I asked her if she would mind if I helped her. I gave her step by step instructions and explained what we would do and why. I doubt any of your listeners go as far back as I do. One of my heroes was Ann Marie Silverton. One of her great philosophies was: "teach the dog each exercise so he does not know there is any other way to do it than the right way then you never have to correct. There's an IGP test on 8/3. If she listened to me and does everything else well, she should get a great score.

Any owner of a true Pitbull knows that when you keep multiple intact high drive dogs together even the best owners deal with this! I'm a normal house wife/mom with 4 intact pitbulls and I've had to break up more fights than I'd like to admit too! The worst is female on female because my girls are 🔥! I keep bull horns to gain control of their attention. You cannot judgethis man by a short clip in the huge realm of life with his dogs. It's an unfortunate product of owning these dogs and being off your game with them even a little bit! Our commands mean nothing when the are leaning on instincts. Even when you have good obedience, accidents can happen.

Obedience is stupid? Whoa. I specialize in rehabbing reactive and unsocialized dogs and everything I train leads to the dog learning to focus on me and do what I say. I can resolve seriously bad behavior by teaching tricks or obedience or agility or sled pulling. Anything. The relationship is what matters, not the sport. It doesn't matter at all whether I told him to run a tunnel, lie down and stay, or roll over. Whatever activity suits that particular dog, that will be the vehicle for getting him mentally balanced, calm and confident. Obedience is a perfectly good vehicle for learning that.

Its not cute when you let one dog steal the others ones toy or let one sit on your feet and chase off the other dog. You are a resource to the dog. I have 3 dogs two intact male corsos and a female Caucasian Sheppard also intact. I dont have dog fights. Im not a big person. Or a dog trainer. But ive taken alot of dog that other people couldn't keep anymore and i made a lot of mistakes and wasn't always the leader i should have been. But i started watching mother dogs with there puppies and really paying attention to how and why they gave affection or corrections. The didn't get to eat till they were calm the didn't get to go past the invisible line mom set for them they didn't get to be to aggressive with the other puppies or bite. How the mom protected her pups when there was a threat. But i learn everyday with my dog and understand something i didn't understand the day before. I try and keep my dogs both physically and mentally tired. Before they come i to the house. And i often feed them from my hand before I put down the bowl. You can get away with alot more with one dog then you can with 2 or 3 or 100. And they will always show you where your weak as a leader. There issues are usually your problems magnified. I love that larry is always open to saying well shit that didn't work what eles we got😂🤣 as for the poop dog, that dog dont have respect for you as a leader. If it did it wouldn't dare to attack you. Thats my opinion anyways. My one dog out weighs me by 50 lbs and is an independent and stubborn breed. Is she thought for one second she could push me around she absolutely would. In her mind im the most powerful being in the universe. And im the reason shes survives. She could put me in the ground or hospital in 60secs. But she doesn't know that.🤣🤣 its a lot of small steps that dont seem like a big deal. that lead to a big one that cant be ignored. But that's just my experience.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong with my 6 month old puppy. I got him 2 months ago and I've tried to watch every training video and read every training book I can but each day I feel like I'm messing everything up. Maybe it's me and my wife showing to much affection or giving too many treats. I just want the best for him. And he's good for the most part but then it's like a switch is flipped sometimes. He's very reactive towards people and other dogs especially. He's terrible on a leash. For every 10 minutes he's good on the leash, there's 30 minutes He's not. And the list goes on. I just feel like I'm messing him up and it's starting to get to me

Structure man, we want to treat dogs sometimes as if they are a child but they aren't, you are giving them too much freedom and they don't deserve it. I am having an issue with one of my dogs, the other 2 are great but this one has always been a drama guarding stuff. I have made a lot of progress.

@primalcritters 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Corrie how are you? I'm just curious, I'm a pretty experienced dog owner and so I'm wondering if he burned the dog or you just did not like the trainer using the ecollar at all? The reason I ask is because e-collars can be very useful at times but they are VERY controversial. I believe they are controversial because most people use them incorrectly. In order to use them properly you need the proper equipment, meaning a good quality e collar that costs a couple hundred bucks. The cheap ones that you can buy on Amazon can burn your dog's neck. The expensive and well-made ones have various settings and can issue a minor correction that I have used on my own neck and really was not hurt by. Most dogs are very smart and get it immediately and know that as long as that e-collar is on their neck, they don't want the little shock or vibration. Also, and most importantly, you're not supposed to only shock the dog, but also to train a behavior or stop a behavior in tandem with the ecollar so the dog understands and learns something rather than just being punished. It's kind of equivalent to a static shock. This is just my personal take. I am not a dog trainer, just an experienced owner. The last thing I will say is that ecollars should be a last resort but if it's coming down to saving a dog's life then absolutely use the damn collar. I do a lot of rescue work and I cannot tell you how many dogs are returned to shelters for poor Behavior. Behavior that I believe could have been redirected with the proper equipment. The pinch collar is also something that some people find controversial but when used properly is not harmful at all. I'm talking about the Herm sprenger pinch collar. If you have a large dog, powerful dog, Shepherds, Mastiffs, etc you need them you absolutely need them and it's a training tool. For the assholes that leave the pinch collar on a dog 24/7 then yes that is cruel. For the dog owners that use it while walking the dog and training the dog and take it off there after, they're doing it properly turn right now one of my dog's is a Dutch Shepherd and we use the pinch collar when he's walking and training and he does not mind it or Flinch at all. He is very intelligent and understands the quick for a correction Just wanted to put this out there. Have a wonderful day

@@primalcritters I love the ecollar as a tool. He didn't burn him but it was used to force him to do the commands, it was just a horror. Not the 1st dog this trainer has done it too which I later learned. Smh.

Imo digging is a natural dog behavior that is fun for them, so I have a special area where my dog is allowed to dig. If he was ever digging somewhere I would say NO and move him to the area he was allowed to dig in. Sometimes i bury bones and toys in it to encourage his continued interest in that spot. If you don't have the ability to have a digging area for your dog or you don't want him to dig just keep interrupting the behavior and they'll give up on doing it... Probably. Some breeds are really really hard wired to dig in which case I would definitely try to give them an outlet for that behavior.

When I first got Marley I was hesitant to shape her personality. I wanted her to develop one on her own, within my boundaries. I failed to see that I shaped it regardless, by doing nothing (sometimes). She turned out great, because I wasn't a total idiot. But there are definitely things I'd do differently with the next dog.

It's me that's going to have to get used to not cuddling and petting.

I have an aggressive dog that attacts me when I let him off lease.?? ( with no dogs or people around) I have started taking a ball out with me, it works and keeps him working. Is this a right thing to do? He does not like men? He goes crazy when he sees other dogs and jumps out at them in aggressive attack mode. Sometimes if people get to close to him he does the same. especially if they are running free!? He was like this when I got him at 5-6 months....I’ve asked for help, but he still does this at 18 months. I ve worked hard to help this dog, that was almost put down. In house he is different !?

I’m just starting the “no freedom” method with my husky puppy 7 m/o and I just don’t know how to shake the feeling that I’m hurting her :( I know it’s probably for the best on the long run but it just hurts so much for me as an owner:( I been trying to train her first with positive reinforcement and then with balance training but she just doesn’t care about my as an owner neither for my husband that is also her owner. She bites the leash like crazy and doesn’t listen at all. I want what’s best for her and even tho she has been a pain in the ass I can’t see my life without her and makes my cry just to think about it. Thanks for all your help. I’ll be trying the two leash method as well :(

Well, I may sound silly but, dogs , just like kids, are the reflection of the family/household they are living in/with; stupid people have "stupid dogs", and stupid parents have stupid kids. Some shouldn't EVER, "have" any. While you are right on many issues, we, never, ever, crated our dogs. Never told them where they can sleep, pee, have access to water etc. All of our dogs we were privileged to share our home/lives with, were obedient, social, funny and most of all, being dogs. Never had to take obedience classes/training etc. All we did/are doing, is WANTING to learn what particular dog's needs are and fulfill them. The affection/quirks from them, is just an added bonus. Interesting content by the way, but we never had to deal with any of those "dangerous situations" Thank you :-)
