It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive KZbin experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong (and frequently does)...
This time, as we test a 1999 Hyundai Lantra J2 1.6 Remo, we make unsubstantiated claims about its rarity, complain about its gearbox, get excited about its condition, moan about the lack of air conditioning (several times) and drone on about very little of any importance at all. Nothing untoward, then...

My favourite era of Hyundai, mainly because my Grandad had a Accent of this era and the controls, switchgear, and the colour of the interior are all so familiar. A excellent review of a great looking Hyundai.

Lovely Lantra. The Hyundai TV adverts from the 1990s called these "the curvy car". Hyundais are for winners! 😉

Yes, a curvy car, but sadly a very generic one when looked upon in its historic context.

Again a new exiting korean surprise! I also always thought that the sizes of Hyundai in the 90 wasn’t comparable with other brands. The 90s B-segment pony/Excel/accent wasn't anything like a Polo or fiesta or corsa. It was just bigger and a totally different vehicle . And the same with the Lantra it was the story in the C-segment. It wasn’t anything like a focus golf or astra. So maybe for allot of people it was hard to understand what class they drove. The Lantra you drove didn’t had a/c and the reason is ( i think) it’s. Because it had a sunroof.. my fathers 1995 mk1 facelift lantra glx also didn’t had a/c but it had a electric sunroof. But he had to choose between a electric sunroof or a/c. To stay under a sort of price range he couldn’t get them both. Maybe it was the same case with this one? I still can’t understand my father that he choose a sunroof instead of a/c in that time.. I can remember that we had this mk2 model but the pre-facelift as a loaner car when our 1995 mk1 facelift was to the garage for service . It had a 1.6 engine and my father thought it drove much better and faster than the 1.5 he had. And yes I thought that 2 but strangely i liked our mk1 more. Maybe because it was our car. Or maybe it was because my dad had a very nice special blue/green paint in it that changed color from different angles and a spoiler with a 3th braking light in it. Still the Hyundai was weird with it’s sizes compared with others brands. It was hard to see what segment it was. They changed that when the Lantra and the accent range stopped for the i10 i20 i30 models. Nowadays it’s no different anymore compared to others and now you can see the segment/class ver good. But i have more love for the early days of Hyundai

Thank you, sir! Yes, Hyundai tried to straddle two market segments with many of their models in the 1990s. Having driven both J1 and J2 Lantras (actually two J1s), I know exactly what you mean about the J1s being more appealing although the J2 is technically a bit more advanced.
@jdnrotterdam2150
@jdnrotterdam2150 2 жыл бұрын
@@lloydvehicleconsulting indeed the j2 had airbags.. and maybe more other luxury things and hearing my dad’s experiences with the lantra’s it also drove better than the j1 . But what i have with the lantra i also have with the excel. I like the 1993 pony/excel more than the next more curvy model excel. Here in the Netherlands i never saw a J1 lantra with a/c but i do saw j2 lantra’s with a/c plus i still van find j2 lantra’s on the internet the j1 is disappeared

@@jdnrotterdam2150 , the J1 Lantras, are very, very rare over here. The very late ones did have a driver's airbag, as I have driven one with one! The J2 had more safety equipment from the start, but is a bit more common (still very rare, however). The J1s I have filmed never had air conditioning, but they were all GLS or GLSi models.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting the only j1 i saw on the internet with a/c was in america. The j2 i saw allot with a/c. There is an internet side where you can look at a cars history by the license plate. Most cars from the 90s. Are exported to eastern europe or africa. Specially Korean and japnese cars. We still saw allot of 80s and 90s and beginning 00’s european cars over here. But the asian cars from that time are almost all exported. You can look back until 2000. If a car was still on the Dutch road in 2000 you can look it back . Our j1 lantra was exported in 2003. And our 1998 mazda 626 exported in 2007 “. Sadly i can’t find anything about our 1991 mazda 626’s history. Than means that it is or totaled or exported before 2000

The facelift made this car hideous looking. All I remember is the thin grey plastic, horrible gear change, lack of front head room and an underlining feeling that the R&D budget was tight. The launch version is much nicer. But for what it is in a moment of time it’s nice to see this and a reflection of how far modern Hyundai has came today.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 жыл бұрын
It's a bit of a museum piece, really. I wouldn't call it hideous, but I do remember the pre-facelift ones, and I understand what you mean. The bigger problem was the really notchy gearbox, which despite its low mileage, really was not very nice at all.

That does look good, liked both of mine, first was a 96 1.6 GLSi auto estate had late 90s, sold due to fuel usage, few years later got a low mileage 1.6 GLSi saloon. Neither had aircon but were good reliable cars. Been long time since I last saw one on the road, suspect not many left now, very few good as that one is.

The Korean goes from strength to strength. Like the Peugeot 306 of the time the Lantra is a very good car. Peugeot Pros; ride, handling, long distance comfort. XS and GTI class leading hot hatches. Attractive and practical estates. Peugeot Cons; noisy engines. Doors sound tinny on closing, some very flimsy interior fittings and lack of equipment on all but top models. Bland styling. Hyundai Pros; reliability, great warranty. Value for money. Great fit and finish with solid build quality. Very smooth and quiet engines, nice gearchange. Colour coded bumpers and mirrors and Power steering standard across the range. Attractive and practical estates. Hyundai Cons; Steering, handling and comfort adequate. Indicator and wiper stalks odd but only at first. Depreciation above average. Bland styling.

Sir, that gearchange in the Lantra was pretty bad, to be honest, despite having about 20,000 miles on the clock. Both the owner and I agree about that. The fit and finish doesn't really feel that good... The equipment levels, however, were quite high for the price. The driving position isn't the best, either, with very limited headroom for some reason. I was left feeling strangely disconnected from this car, I admire it far more as a piece of automotive history than as something enjoyable to drive, as does the owner, I think.
