I have an 04.5 that has 400,000 miles on factor head gaskets. Put an aftermarket turbo mouthpiece on it with a s&b air intake and never gets over 210 on the temp. I pull a 32ft cattle trailer and will gross around 32,000 pounds when fully loaded and will run 75 down the highway in 100 degree temps. Great truck. Out lived our Cummins and powerstroke we ran also.

I'm at 250k miles on original HG's on my 2005. Runs great, did have to get the FICM repaired and do #2 and #7 injector pigtails otherwise its been great. Been in the family since new. Tuned to +100hp and no overheating. I tow on +80hp. Water pump went at 225k.

I want to get mine tuned. Just changed out factory injection pump. Sold my 2021 ram Cummins last month and driving my lly again. Can’t beat it.

Bought my 2004.5 - 2005, somewhat recently. Looks to have made to 308,000 completely stock with no problems. Idles great, drives fine, no blow by, nothing weird coming out of the tail pipe, coolant is normal, no bubbles in reservoir, etc Did upgrade the turbo inlet, deleted the EGR. Just waiting on a upgrade turbo down pipe, and passenger side up pipe. Think that should do it for now. Don't plan to sink a whole lot of money into upgrades yet (full HSP kit, lift, tires, etc). Need a 2nd job for that. And the truck should help me commute to a 2nd job long enough to make enough for that. Don't plan to upgrade the power, I believe it has enough.

Two of my dads work trucks are a 2005 and a 2006 LLY duramax both have had no problems and have over 450,000 kilometres

04.5. Bought it with 110k, its got 180k now. Issues, headliner, cracked dash, headlight controls, window and heated seat controls, climate controler, steering column shaft, cylinder 2 and 7 injector harnesses, fuel pressure regulator, worn wire insulation rubbing on fender, front wheel bearings, water pump, and yes, when towing over a pass in 100F its gets very warm even with the new turbo inlet. I will be adding after market oil cooler to help the over heating. With that said, it has never left me stranded, and most the issues i named can be done if your handy.

Bought my 2005 recently and thanking about getting a cts 3 tuner so I can get some better fuel mileage and a 5” exhaust the truck has 177000 miles and been taken care of

Aside from water pumps and wiring harness... 757,000 miles now, original internals including CP3 pump.

Went and looked at tons of these before I bought the biggest fail point I saw was the head gasket which is serious. Check the radiator reservoir it needs to absolutely be clean no black gunk. Next delete the egr and do pcv reroute. Then air dog or fass lift pump. Check the transfer case seems to also be another fail point. Remember maintenance is everything to these trucks. The cs2 tuner it’s what I like I don’t want crazy horse power so 500 is plenty and more than most that’s out on the road. Next check the turbo up pipe on the pass side it break at the billet. Then 4 in not 5 straight pipe. I love my truck and to tell you the truth if im going to try to start pushing 750 plus I tear shit apart anyway and build the trans so I wouldn’t be worrying about the rods. Also the injector wires on 1 and 8 seem to chaff and through you into limp mod. If it does not already have the s&b inlet on it I wouldn’t but it. It means it’s had to of over heated before which mean that head gaskets at least on its way out.

You might want to add FICM failures with no replacement parts. Also can add no stock replacement glow/quality plug modules.

I have a 2005 Chevy c5500 with the lly 345k starts strong once it warms up its losing power. I brought a engine out a wrecked 2500 hd . Should the exchange be simple.

Having a 6.0 power stroke that’s been “bulletproofed” but still having to deal with typical hpop problems I’ve been looking at getting another truck and found a 2005 Silverado lly with only 85k miles I’m interested in but I’m worried about how common head gasket failures are on them because looking through forums the general consensus is that they will go out no matter what. Do you think it’s pretty common and something I should watch out for with buying an lly with that low of miles.

n3wb - It is definitely common, but not at those mileage levels, so long as it has been maintained well up to that point. If it's been modded heavily or has towed a lot, i'd say no. However, if not, take it to a mechanic to have the head gaskets looked at. Keep us updated on this.

@@8020Media yeah so I bailed on the truck it took some prying to get information from the guy about it and he got really offended when I asked if it was a clean title because he wants almost 30k for it but it has a rebuilt title and he didn’t want to tell me what happened to it that caused it to get a rebuilt title and said if it was a clean title he’d want at least 40k for it. It looks really clean has a lift kit egr delete and exhaust. But I’m not buying a rebuilt truck for that much especially if the seller is being sketchy about the details. Im still looking around for an lly or lbz I’ll update you again if I get something.

I ran in to a problem going down the highway when she in last gear all most like she's jumping or hoping had the transmission rebuild though it was that but it's still doing it can any one help here please

Not necessarily, just depends on what you are looking to do with it. I would certainly recommend the 2006 models with the updated engine. But the older models are still solid reliability wise unless you are looking to mod it. Toss an upgraded inlet on it to help with heat issues and it'll be a solid engine. Now if you are talking a 200k+ mile engine and you are trying to tune it and push some decent power then I would say avoid the LLY. Maintenance history will play a big role in reliability too.
