Honestly, of all uses of AI, Grok might GENUINELY be one of the best use cases possible. Psychologists sometimes uses characters in ways to make kids more open to talk about difficult topics, and if you can have a reliable (key word is reliable) stuffed animal friend your kids can trust, this can help with dealing with a lot of really hard things kids face, specially if for one reason or another the kid may find hard to open up with their parents. It's important that Grok and similar toys shouldn't be a substitute for parents, brothers and sisters, teachers, and so on, but in a case where the child is not comfortable with anyone else, Grok is better than nothing and could be a positive influence.

7:47 - To be fair, I think it's not fair to demand toys like that to be so chained down. Some heavier filters to avoid non kid friendly content to come out is good, but I think there are only two situations where bypassing basic filters could occur: 1. Your kid is being a smart ass and is trying really hard to make it say "poop", and I'd say let them. The toy became a puzzle and they are probably learning a bunch of skills doing that; 2. Your kid is genuinely trying to get content not meant for their age behind your back, and considering the age Grok is meant for this is probably a good signal you should have a talk with your kid and maybe take them to a psychologist to see what is going on.

I'd say it's actually one of the best implementations of AI. I don't think it would be good for Groks to substitute parenting, familial bonds, friends, teachers and so on, but if they manage to unlock more capabilities, Grok can be a really positive force. I'm sure a lot of kids would benefit from having a stuffed animal friend they can talk to about their problems and get actual good advice. At extreme cases, you could even have Grok contact 911 or CPS if the kid asks for it. Grok can advice the kid to talk with parents, teachers, deal with bullying, and help the kid voice their problems in a healthier way. Psychologists today already use characters to help kids open up, and toys like Grok can do just that.

Eg towards a mental health support line if they seem depressed, CPS if it suspects abuse, or, y'know, calling for an ambulance if a kid tells it their mother has fallen down! To be fair, I think their first priority with this initial batch was making it safe for kids, since a scandal of the new AI toy telling kids how to make napalm or masturbate would kill it forever. But yes, this would be an amazing product if it reaches that potential (I wouldn't go so far as to allow the toy to do things without confirmation, but give it at least the option to call 911 if the kid requests it under certain contexts or even CPS after a talk).

That kind of computing still takes some serious beef and manual work (the fully automated ones are barely tolerable, but the properly edited ones can be really good). The source are curated creations I found on youtube. And that type of toy is already on the market under various names. Teddy Ruxpin would come to mind, that is even way more sophisticated due to the animatronics. I am less concerned about Type moon and more about the recording industry, their lawyers are VERY active over here.

They are profit and if lying about your privacy is going to increase profit, they will absolutely do it.
