The house is a cruel beast. First it took the mom then used her to try to draw the kids back to itself starting with the youngest and most vulnerable. Then it showed Nell everything she was missing in her life. Her siblings all together and happy again and then her husband . this episode and the next are some of the best TV I think I have ever seen. This show in general is so much more than scares. The family grief and the way they deal with it, put in story form , is so well done.

SPOILER . . . You find out by the end of the series that the house isn't evil at all. It's all Poppy, who was an insane person, so she's an insane ghost. She's the one that drives Olivia insane. All of the other ghosts are either helpful or just living their best ghost lives and trying not to bother the Crane family. The tall ghost just wants his hat back. The ghost in the basement is the one that presses the dumbwaiter button to send Luke back up to the kitchen. The old lady ghost (Hazel) tries to warn Olivia that Poppy is a liar. The Bent Neck Lady is trying warn Nell of her eventual fate.

This show is a masterpiece. When I don't know what to watch, I just rewatch either this or Dark. The cinematography, the storytelling, the acting... top tier. I was messed up for a few days after this episode. I feel Lola on this one. I have a different thinking on why it was always Nellie as the bent neck lady. The mom said the girls got special feelings passed down from their grandma. The mom had headaches, Shirley had dreams. Theo had a special touch and Nellie saw the future. Unfortunately the future Nellie saw most often was her own death. That’s a true horror.

Yeah, its happened with my family. Someone who is very sick to a point where they suck up more than just the energy of those around them. Yet you can't abandon them completely, not really, because regardless if their in your life they're always in mind. It gets to a point where it is very toxic. That's why I understand Steve's attitude as it's very accurate.
@drlee24 жыл бұрын
I think it's a lost cause. There has been like ONE reaction channel out of the many for this series where the reactors actually like Steve and understand where he's coming from. It's almost like characters aren't allowed to be complex or be harsh and blunt like real people can be. Every character can't be a goody two shoes hero. Someone has to be the "bad guy." And I don't believe for a second that some reactors wouldn't behave exactly the way that Steve given his POV. It's easy to say a character is a jerk or dickish and then go onto say "I could never do that or be like that." Yeah, right! lol
@cormyat074 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think a lot of people don't realize how totally unreliable and trustworthy addicts often become, and you can give them chance after chance and they will squander them, until it just becomes a drain on your own happiness. The episodes just get increasingly painful and devastating as they go along. The tragedy and the pain isn’t evil, the ghosts are the trauma, the regrets, the suffering of a family haunted by their life-altering experience in that house. Such incredible writing. You aren’t scared of tbr ghosts, you’re scared about the ones suffering having a bad ending. Seeing Nellie happy is so bittersweet and aching because she WAS happy once, and it feels so hard earnt, but we know it was fleeting

I hope you continue watching this series. The first 5 episodes have all been background/set up for the rest. The jewel of this show is the emotional involvement with the characters, that's what makes this series worth the investment. In this episode Nell stops taking her meds so that Luke can get clean (Twin Thing). When Steve and Luke saw ghost Nell she was wearing the same clothes as the last time they saw her. Her psychiatrist, Dr. Montague, is played by Russ Tamblyn who played Luke in the original movie. His name is a reference to the original book. Nell is the main character in the book and so this episode holds the most references to the it. Come Home, cup of stars and collecting buttons. Her last name is Vance in the book which she becomes when she marries Arthur. Arthur is also a minor character in the book.

I had sleep paralysis tons of times in my life, some of them with visual hallucinations. Most of the time it's more like a dream where I'm at my bed, unable to move. There are occasions where I can scream, but it is more like a dream scream. No one can hear me, because it's not a "real scream". When I finally wake up, sometimes I see weird, even funny, imagery. Usually some small things, like little heads spinning in front of me. Not that scary, to be honest, because they are not normal heads, they are cartoonish. My older brother, on the other hand, would wake up and see and hear terrifying stuff. Like, for an example, an old man sitting on his bed. There were a few times, when we were teenagers, that he woke up in the middle of the night, screaming. It was scary AF. My mother also had these things. She saw her dead grandma on her bed a couple of times. Once, she woke up and saw an Angel standing by her side (It's weird because she says that she could move that time). She saw a bright, luminous, Angel, staring at her with his wings open.

Its the House, maybe its the family.. all of them have some kind of connection with each other, the house or the supernatural. Time works weird in their world or rather the house as you can see, without spoiling much, so the writings on the wall, Nellie seeing herself even when she was a child.. Its like she haunted herself, and the most crucial moments wich led her to the events that shaped Nel as a person and character to become Bent Neck lady.. Dont stop, you cant stop the story is just getting better, and the next episode is probably one of the best done in a tv show.. It’s not a sequel. If they had a new house with mysterious ghosts and a broken family you would be complaining that they just copied the first season. In fact, they did have broken people and mysterious ghosts and you’re still complaining. It’s two completely different stories. Yes it’s way slower, but the storyline depends on the slow narrative and it totally pays off. It’s more like a game of Clue than a horror story. I liked Hill House better but I also liked Bly. You don’t have to crap all over Bly and discourage people from watching it just because you were bored. Some people appreciate a well told story. And it was.
