For many steam enthusiasts, the highlight of the rail tour calendar is the Railway Touring Company’s “Great Britain” tour. Now in its twelfth year, the tour takes in all four corners of Great Britain (should that be three corners?) and sees steam travelling along many unusual routes, and with lots of interesting and varied traction.
Today sees the Grand Finale, and they have arguably saved the best til last, with the National Railway Museum’s world-famous LNER pacific ‘Flying Scotsman’ taking the tour from Scarborough to Paddington.
Not only is the my first catch up with ‘Scotsman’ this year, but it’s also my first trip to York. With its beautifully preserved Victorian decor, and variety of traction, not to mention frequent steam haulage, it really is a railway Mecca. As it’s an early Sunday morning, it’s reassuringly quiet, leaving plenty spots to choose from.
First up, two regular workings-
185121 1P 68 Middlesbrough to Manchester Oxford Road.
91112 pushing a InterCity 225 set on 1Y20 Newcastle to King’s Cross.
Then ‘Flying Scotsman’ arrives, her exhaust visible as she crosses the Scarborough Bridge, before steaming into the station. A brief interlude before she gets underway with the minimum of fuss.
I am told that thanks to a combination of a broken rail and some fairly egregious line-side trespassing, the tour got held up by over 90 mins later in the day. This is very sad to hear, and of course risks the future of steam haulage in the mainline. I hope anyone on the tour reading this didn’t have their day spoiled too much.
Enjoy
