Great video by the way! I have a Marshall 1960BX with 25 Watt Greenbacks. The Suhr Reactive Load with IR's got me very close to my beloved Marshall cabinet using the 1.2 setting (4 x 12 with Greenbacks, HiGain, with a 57 and 121). I was sold on the Suhr when I could get real close to the cranked tone of my favorite cabinet.

Really like the Suhr Reactive Load IR. Had the OX, but I felt it was a little sterile and I didn't want to do the tweaking. The Suhr gives you the flexibility to load other IR's and it's easy to use. Makes recording Marshalls at home very convenient!!

Well done comparison - I have a similar setup including the KHE and the OX. FYI: In the OX software you can choose DIRECT as Mics to disable speaker simulation - so you can bypass the IR section.

This is my understanding as well. I run the guitar> amp> OX with mics set to direct> Archetype Nolly with only the cab section enabled to allow for different cab options. Sounds great!

I have the Suhr RL…Fryette PS2…Boss TAE..and the Fractal X-Load…they all sound different,as every speaker and cab will have a different impedance curve….The Fryette and Fractal are my favorites…The TAE with its adjustable reactance curves is good too…and no,the TAE won’t blow up your amp…The Fryette is handy because of the switches where you can change the reactance from resistive,to some reactance,to full out reactance….These are all great,and really great tools to have …..

If you’re handy with a soldering iron buying bulk cable is much more cost effective. I bought 100ft of instrument cable and 100ft of speaker cable and made my own cables. It’s much cleaner and cheaper than individual cables. Plus you can get high quality cable like mogami cheaper in bulk.

fantastic vid Bea ! Anyway i dont think that using same ir setting in order to compare loadbox is so usefull at the end. I think could be more usefull compare “the best sound i can get from” as different loadbox reacts different with different IR. I have captor x and after a couple of month i have found very good ir combination. im really satisfied by now. i just bought TAE cos i own an amp and a couple of speaker v30 that require 16ohm and captor x does not serve that impedance. i could have gone for torpedo 16ohm much cheaper but i decided to explore also all the new feature of tae as attunuator , fx loop, dual spk output, continuos volume attenuation, power amp etc. the very alternative to TAE is fryette that is great but i ve got enough tubes valve in my house. thank you again…
@RandyWillcox2 жыл бұрын
Bea! In the OX app, you can bypass the mics and just take the direct amp sound. I used to do that to use Wall Of Sound when the Victory Cab Packs came out and UA hadn't put the V30s in the OX yet. So it's not a blanket on/off, but you can do it easily and then save them as DI presets to recall later. 🤘🏻

I enjoyed this shootout having a great routing box! What I'd love is next touch on this concept that you used the same cab ir for all the units if possible, so that way the only change would be the units rather than the change in tone from the cab. As the transducers in the signal are what make any tone sound the way it does frequency wise. This way you can clearly see if there is any change in tone frequencies from unit to unit.
@josuastangl71402 жыл бұрын
I thought that's exactly what he did
@fateunleashed96802 жыл бұрын
@@josuastangl7140 @ 8:24 he mentions specifically how each load box emulates different speaker cabs, so you'd have to bypass this and manually run 1 IR with all of them to truly know the difference of the boxes themselves. This is more of a comparison of the sound of the load boxes as they come with the same signal path running through each. Assuming you use the same guitar the only other factor contributing to your tone is the real or recorded real speaker and the mic on said speaker, so this makes all the difference.
@josuastangl71402 жыл бұрын
@@fateunleashed9680 now I get what you're saying, but I think you actually got this wrong. Pretty sure he's bypassing all the internal IRs and using GGD Cali OS, but as these still are reactive loadboxes, the reactive part has to emulate some kind of a response of a cabinet and that part is still different for each of the loadboxes, if I understand this correctly.
@mrcoatsworth4292 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same. It was a bit confusing. But I went back and he clearly says that for 3 of the units he's using the same IR. For the Universal thing he can't turn off the cab sim.

You should try the RedSeven Amp Central reactive box, it seems to sound very homogeneous and close to the sound of a real speaker, I would like to see a video trying it out and testing it with the ones you have. Great review and great Soldano tone, very killer!
@Johnsormani8 ай бұрын
Didn’t watch the video but here is my opinion on load boxes. A passive loadbox will have a major influence on your sound because it is only a resistance .if this doesn’t fit your wanted sound it’s not for you. any reactive load at best can mimic a speaker impedance/reactance curve in one specific setup . If you don’t have that exact speaker in the same setup it will not be the same as the real speaker and can some completely different from the original with other speakers , depending on how different the curve is. The doesn’t mean it sounds bad but it’s different . You could try to compensate for the differences with eq and using IR’s but that’s not the same since the amp sees a different impedance/reactance.

It’s only really an issue if you’re sending signal to the amp (playing) while not having a load hooked up. Having no load for a few seconds to switch load boxes while not playing doesn’t pose an issue.

How do you run a stereo pedalboard through a switcher that doesn’t support FX loops? If you’re in the states, DeLisle makes the best switchers. FX loops and switchable attenuation supported makes their stuff better IMO. Seems KZbin hypes up KHE when really it’s ok at best compared to DeLisle or Ampete.

Welp, I must give many thanks to Bea for absolutely blowing my freakin' mind just then. Ha! I've been tracking guitar "in the box" for far too long in my flat (apartment). I really miss that sweet spot low "ghost" harmonic feeling that only a pushed 50-100 watt tube head into a cab does. Sold my proper amps during Covid out of desperation. I picked up a Katana 50MkII later on. Actually impressed using it as a powered cab. Huge Question my dude! The Victory Kraken V4 preamp? It's been in my cart for weeks. My thoughts? Using it straight into my Focusrite with TwoNotes Wall of Sound, or into the "power amp in" of the Katana like a preamp? In theory? Both should be wicked. Although, I really have no proper evidence to substantiate that hypothesis. 😬 Thanks in advance for any advice! Cheers!

I did the opposite thing, switched from using a boss katana to a pre-amp/speaker cab zero-watt amp (the humboldt simplifier) and it sounded and responded a lot better! It didn't take me long after that to invest in a real tube amp and have not looked at my katana since.

I still don´t really know what essentials I need for recording guitar and practicing, while using Plugins at home. I have a mac book air and I would like to record / practice while using that. So i would need an Audio interface, like an 1000€ Apollo? Or can I buy a scarlett for 120 Bucks. What about an amp. Should I use only Plugins, or do you need an Amp Head into an OX or a Boss Tube expander.. ? Its really hard for me to switch from my simple solid state amp to digital recording so i hope this is not to much to answere. Thank you for your Videos!
@simonk8332 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, you can absolutely buy a scarlett and that would be totally fine. You also don't need an amp if you want to keep things cheap. Plugins have come a LOOOONG way. As it's Black Friday now's a good time to pick some up, and Neural DSP have 50% off at the moment which are arguably some of the best amp sim plugins you can buy (they have a free trial too so you can test a few out). So with a Scarlett and a single plugin you'll be good to go (and then you can join the rest of us and get carried away and buy way too many other plugins).
@mrcoatsworth4292 жыл бұрын
You absolutely do not need a 1000 Euro interface. I recommend looking at what's currently out there and reading some reviews etc. I don't know the scarlett interfaces, but I've been recording with an Audient id4 for two years or so with no issues. As for plugins, there is good free stuff to start with. However, right now there are lots of deals because of black friday. But you don't need a real amp to record.
