I am totally with you…I’ll turn 50 years old this year…I’ve trained with grenade launchers, M4’s, SMG’s, etc. but I keep finding myself with a 50-70 or 45-70 or 45 Colt when I’m by myself…I gravitate forwards the 18th century flintlock & 19th century cartridge rifles in my natural state 😏 yet I always carry a high quality .45 ACP 1911 on a daily basis no matter what.

Dang Right! The Dark side is the only way to go with these guns! It's what they were designed for and countless Buffalo are gone because they worked so well! I have a theory about why drop tubes work. I think the fine, flour like powder floats down last towards the bullet end, changing the burn rate from flash end to bullet end. The drop tubed rounds even sound different than those that are not drop tubed. More consistent FPS and more accurate too! If that is not the reason, I have no idea what else it could be.

I agree, not sure why but the drop tube dos make a difference, and thy do sound different, I think it is also because you can compress the powder more in the case with the press than can be done with the ramrod

I always enjoy watching you work Dave.

Using a spoon for tapping on the shell instead of using a drop tube does the job just as well.

I was able to fill in 62gr of FF black powder in my 45-70 case and seated it with a 405gr powdercoated lead bullet. I didn’t add a shot card nor use a drop tube. Just wanted to load 1 BP cartridge as a proof of concept. I heard a little crunch when seating the bullet so I guess it’s compressed? Am I going to die if I fire it? Kidding, not kidding.

Thant what a black powder load in 45-70 should be. Drop tube is recommended but for consistency not safety. No guts no glory ehh?
@oldrabidus22303 жыл бұрын
@@BuckskinDave I did some further reading and it seems compression like you said is for consistency not safety. I remember 45-70 loads in cavalry guns were of lower charges. If it was more dangerous then of course they wouldn’t have loaded up lower charges.

Have you any crono specs on your bullet and powder loads..I've the option to buy one but could be restricted to range use depending on what powder and bullet i would be using..some ranges i use have restrictions..
@oldrabidus22302 жыл бұрын
@@cgdeery Never did sorry. It’s still loaded up. Next time the 45-70 goes out, I’ll shoot that BP load.

Hello, what is your thoughts on Pyrodex RS instead of black powder? Would you do the same functions? Drop tube powder plug? I'm trying to load some 45-120's. Mag primer? Any help would be great.
@BuckskinDave3 жыл бұрын
Never did Pyrodex in big cartridges. I would start with whatever primers you can get then try some mags. Would definitely be worth experimenting with if you can take the ribbing from the black powder purists.

I just reloaded 45-90 with Triple 7 ffg which Dave had said he'd never used. I got great results from 75 grains by volume with it and cleanup was super easy. I used a drop tube.

Im going to stick with smokeless. I can buy it locally and shoot 40 rounds and my gun is still clean. Using 4198.
@BuckskinDave7 ай бұрын
4198 is a great smokeless for bpcr, it is one of the early powders. Thanks for stopping in
@cgdeery2 жыл бұрын
Can you use less b/powder and filler to take up the rest of the volume??

I often do if I want to slow the bullet down a bit. Some rifles shoot better slow. Thanks for stopping by
