Coming from someone who never got into Deftones, I think the album is almost perfect. Definitely AOTY for me. Despite all the comparisons made to other bands, you can’t deny how impressive it is. It’s a lot more easier to appreciate if you listen without pause. What really makes this album is how much of a “journey” it is to listen from beginning to end with all the amazing transitions. It really sinks you in and immerses you in it

All I'll say about Deftones... If you liked this, "Koi No Yokan" is a great album that shares a lot of the sounds you hear in this album... Maybe a bit less aggressive, but I'd go as far as saying that that exact album i named potentially inspired Loathes mellow/melodic sound.

@@Ennui. what’s funny is that the album cover to this almost seems inspired by Koi No Yokan with the sprites and stuff, and if you watch the “Broken Vision Rythym” video by Loathe, at one point they make the EXACT look of the Koi No Yokan album. Feel like i’ve been the only one to notice it lol

I liked this album a lot upon my first listen, but as I began to understand it more I fell completely in love. Stylistically the album is all over the place, but I think that's a vehicle to help the concept and the general sonic journey of the album develop. From my understanding it seems like a downward spiral, but from a plethora of different perspectives that eventually converge. In the beginning, there are a healthy mesh of melodic and heavy moments, but such moments aren't as oppressive or noisy as they are on the latter half of the record. Red Room is sonically around where I think the album stops developing the "world" it's built and focuses on the downward progression. Screaming and Is It Really You? create the illusion of recovery and seem to serve as a deceiving gradual upward progression after the severe mental drop of Red Room. Then instability comes back. Gored and Heavy Is The Head bring you back to the Red Room mentality, but from a place of insanity rather one of anger or shock. Then A Sad Cartoon comes, and it's similar to Is It Really You? or Two-Way Mirror stylistically but implies a completely different feeling. It's bittersweet. It's the acceptance of something horrible. And though there's beauty in that clarity, there's dread too. And that's where I Let It In comes in at the end, the title track. Whatever "it" is, it's loomed in the distance and affected the inhabitants of the album's world in different ways... but it's also had its gradual effect on everyone involved. By the end, it took everything, from everyone. It's like a continuation of the clarity from A Sad Cartoon, but less bittersweet and more overthought and ruminated. It's had time to sink in and become isolating bleakness and grief. I see, you are; there's no meaning anymore.
@thewaxbiscuit3 жыл бұрын
I guess I need to dig into the lyrics to see what the progression looks like. But musically I'm not sold so much on the journey of the album even if you explain it well. Either way though, it's hard to balance these disparate sonics on the same album so while I may have done it a bit differently, there's always going to be pros and cons to any track order I think.
@paulbladder23 жыл бұрын
@@thewaxbiscuit To be honest I've listened to the album an unhealthy amount of times, so I could also be projecting a bit of my own meaning onto it lol. I think the smooth transitions between songs definitely helped with the night and day stylistic switches, but it is still a valid criticism. I'm excited to see how they mesh these styles together more fluidly!

I can totally understand how you guys felt about the album as a whole, for the first few listens it’s incredibly emotionally exhausting almost to the point of un-enjoyment. It happened to me around my 6th or 7th listen I shut my phone off, laid on the floor and stared blankly at my ceiling while listening and I understood and appreciated it more. This album is truly a journey for me, emotionally exhausting? Yes, however it’s that way in the best way. My album of 2020 for sure. I cannot wait for my next listen and I can’t wait till they release more albums. Great review guys!!!

This is my AOTY, been listening to them since the cold sun days. Their themes and sound is pushing boundaries and this is the band I use for newer metal listeners as a gateway like two way mirror but the thing is they encompass everything so they give a sound that everyone can like and pick out but. The album run from beginning to end is a journey especially when your high, lol. But their older stuff is also good like east of Eden and it’s yours, I look forward to seeing what these guys do in the future because they are so new and they are already shaking the scene up. Cheers from California, USA.

For Is It Really You? I broke down the chords between this song and Pink Maggit. Both are superficially similar in chord progressions. They share 1 or 2 notes but both are set in different keys. personally this album took me a bit. the shoegaze influence was actually somewhat uncomfortable to listen to at times since the distortion was so prominent in the mix. some riffs felt like they didn't hit, and overall I was disappointed, but everyone was telling me it was good so I gave it another shot. it wasn't until my second listen that I really started to enjoy the cleaner tracks, and finally after listening to a few more tracks like new faces in the dark and gored, I began to appreciate the heaviness. this isn't the first band that has taken a few more listens to like (mastodon was definitely the first) but it probably won't be the last. the album is now one of my favorites
