My tip: Be honest about what you can handle when it comes to maintenance. Retightenings are daunting. I always loved the look of people who have 400-500 locs and that's what I wanted. But I don't have anyone to help me with my hair where I live (no salons, locticians, nothing). I knew I would probably struggle with the maintenance. I gave myself just under 300 locs and am SUPER glad I did. That first retightening proved me right.

My tip: Trust the process. Your locs will go through awkward stages and it might not be what you expected but you really have to trust the process and let the locs do their thang. I guarantee you’ll fall in love with your locs regardless.

Hey TyKara! You and your locs are absolutely lovely and gorgeous, also you have such a bright and positive personality! Sorry my comment will be very long lmao but I wanted to explain why I appreciate your channel very much! You are the first person who got me thinking about getting locs. I'm French (of Congolese descent) but I went to live in Belgium in September 2019 in order to get my master's degree in public and international law (which I obtained last week yay 🥳🥳!). Anyway I wanted to thank you because I never really and seriously saw myself getting locs before because all I was unconsciously projecting in my head were traditional locs, which I love on others people. But having really tight curls (4a) but not a lot of density I wanted volume and did not think getting traditional locs would do it for me. But discovering your channel not long after moving in Brussels and looking at your updates and evolution really blew my mind. I never knew it was possible to have locs that thin. The idea of getting locs grew in me over the past 2 years but since the beginning of the year I thought about it a lot. Also I've been natural since 2015 and I really need a new hair journey, now more than ever I feel like I've done all I wanted with my unloc'd hair, I'm in a new phase of my life and I'm tired of the long wash days and I just need something new. I've been doing a lot of research the past month in order to understand what kind of locs exists, which ones I want, the do/don't, what are the techniques, the maintenance routine etc. Your channel helped a lot! I first wanted to get sisterlocks but then I discovered that it could only be professionally done and I had a hard time finding a loctician specialized in sisterlocks in Paris or Brussels. After documenting myself I'm happy that I found the confidence to install my microlocks myself with 2 strand twists before the end of the summer 😁😁. I'm so happy I can't wait to finally do it! So... all of that to say THANK YOU for being one of my greatest inspirations for this journey ❤️❤️

Great tips. I’m 2 years loc’d. I have DIY microlocs. I did the 4 point rotation interlocking method. My Tips: 1) TAKE YOUR TIME!!!(I had really stressed myself out by trying to complete them in one day. Once I relaxed and only worked for a couple of hours at a time, it was a lot easier and better) 2) blowing out hair or straightening it is pointless because it’s going to shrink anyway 3) Expect shrinkage. (I really thought my hair was going to be the same length as when it was loose. Hair has to shrink to lock) 4) check out all the locking methods and chose what’s best for your hair type and the look you want your locs to have ( I have very dense 4 B and 4 C hair. I knew my locs would be thick looking. So I chose the 4 point method and did small micro locs. My locs are nice a full looking)

Great tips. I did my own as well & have 415ish a few baby locs. I retie every 5wks (with an inch of growth) it took me a wk & I took my time. I'm now 16mths loc'd & loving it

Hey gal, great to see you again. Honestly, if one would like to stretch/straighten their hair before they start, its ok...just do it lightly though esp if you're starting by braids. Otherwise, just watch out for buildup, unravelling, slippage, thinning, over-manipulation and u'll be ok. Plus watch lots of loced youtubers, you can't miss a tip.

Did you have much slippage when you started with two strand lock or do you think starting microlocs with 2 strand twist slip more than interlocking and what did you do to avoid slippage?
