A group of friends has rescued 18 people trapped in trees and from the rooftop of a pub in Rossville, south of Cooktown in Far North Queensland.
Local hero Gavin Dear says it was 'easy' to be a local hero and pays tribute to other locals who were involved an 'unbelievable' rescue effort.
The disaster response is continuing in flood-stricken Far North Queensland despite conditions easing in some areas.
Incredible stories of survival have emerged from locals swamped by floodwaters.
