This was a straight up epic fight!!! Excellent for actually fighting the fish like that! Respect! Seriously this was a once in a lifetime fight this was just epic i wanted to do a backflip when you finally got it! lol It actually reminded me of Hemingway's "The old man and the sea" lol You guys are making me so homesick all these saltwater fishing vids! Im a native southwest floridian and i used to go diving and fishing in the keys every year its one of the most beautiful places in the world and its my favorite place in america. Theres no light pollution in the keys due to the fact that the islands branch hundreds of miles off the mainland and the islands simply dont throw much light so the stars hang right above your head by the millions and dip down and touch the water on the horizon! Waters crystal clear turqoise with a hundred ft visibility. Its so beautiful. See right now im landlocked in the mountains like 500 miles from the nearest ocean. I cant live long away from the sea. Yall have the best jobs in the world period who wants to be so imprisoned making money such a slave to making money that they only see the ocean once a year?! Never let money enslave you! True freedom is worth more than all the money on earth. Excellent video epic fight! Nice nice fish! Im a bit jealous about this one i cant help it this was awesome. Such a beautiful swordfish from my home waters! Im afraid i wouldve had to let it go though if i could. If i could save it i would. Because its like the incarnation of the spirit of my home. That fish is like the ocean incarnate. Thats a wonder of God seriously what a beauty...

Consider using a deep drop light next time, or a small glow stick at your crimp, helps to orient the fish at night. Also, kill the deck lights and use an underwater light and you wont be working against yourselves not being able to see

#1 on the bucket list is to land a sword. I see so many guys in ft.lauderdale catching them all the time its just such a technical type of fishing if you don't have someone to teach you then the learning curve is massive so so so much time you have to put in .you can do it for years and still learn something every single time you do it.

It's probably the most technical fishery but the payoff is awesome.

You can catch them at night way higher up too. Here in Hawaii we handline at night for tuna. Deepest bait is only 20 fathom. Youd be suprised how many swords you catch at night burning light
@LocalKnowledge5 жыл бұрын
Yes sir! That was the only way until about 12 years ago. The Florida sword gurus tell us they switched to daytime because you get more bites and you get to sleep at night. But you're right, they will bite at under 400' at night.
@strikemaster996 жыл бұрын
At 7:02 I believe he cut the line on the face of the reel by accident. Sometimes there are imperfections or fine rough edges left over from the machining process; sometimes unnoticeable and maybe even more common than we think. Pulling a line upward in this fashion during a fight towards the housing can create abrasion on the line therefore a heartbreak could be underway. Lots of guys make this mistake while an angler is fighting a big fish to get an idea of fish size, feel, etc. which is why I put a piece of black electrical tape on the inside upper lip of my reel. Hope this tip helps someone! Happy Fishing!
@LocalKnowledge6 жыл бұрын
You are 100% correct and we had no idea that was even possible. It was pointed out later on and we now put tape on the reel cross bar!

What's the easiest way to tell difference between a swordfish and a marlin? Do marlin have thinner bills than swordfish? And do swordfish jump when they're hooked?
@LocalKnowledge5 жыл бұрын
The easiest way is look at the dorsal fin. The swordfish dorsal is rigid and ends abruptly. A marlin will have a dorsal that runs all the way down it's back toward the tail. Also, a sword bill is shape like a sword. A marlins bill is more round. Thanks for watching.
@mattgosling26575 жыл бұрын

@chadbentley16027 жыл бұрын
awesome show I really enjoy watching all your shows. But ya like carl said the line broke cause of you two pulling the line up against the support bar of the reel. Some of the reels have really sharp edges on the undersides of those cross bars and they can slice through braid super easy. An easy fix is to put a piece of electrical tape over that edge and that will stop the reel from being able to cut into the braid.

Hey Rush, 1st) Awesome video! and 2nd) Why did you back off the drag when you got him near the boat?
@AliHussainy8 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed. We usually back the drag off a little with any big fish next to the boat. You leader is short which doesn't provide much stretch in case of a sudden big run or jerk. Also, it takes a little pressure off the angler in case they need to make a quick move around the boat or motors.
@MrGb4ever8 жыл бұрын
Ali Hussainy I see and thanks for the feedback! Back in the day of Zane Grey or Lou Maron you would be lucky to hook a Swordfish once in your lifetime let alone land one but now in this time Swordfish are plentiful and guys are catching them during the day...But back then anyone that was lucky enugh to go to battle with a swod would keep a light drag because of the soft mouth...They may have one shot at it so even if it took hours it was worth.....So the Tuna fisherman claim they are a better fighter because you can`t stick it to a Sword the way you can a Tuna...But today because Swords are so plentiful guys do lock down their drags to 45 lbs on these fish and they still ended up fighting 500 to 600 lbs Swords for 7 to up to 11 hours on 80 lb tackle..And on top of that sometimes there is two guys taking turns on the rod applying maximum pressure throughout the whole fight...So the fact that it took you guys as long as it did to subdue that fish was not really uncommon...Great job!

Ali, I`ve done countless hours and years studying both of these fish as a fisherman myself...You and many others like Nick Stanczyk believe the Broadbill has greater stamina lb for lb than a Bluefin Tuna or any other fish that swims which is surely based on fight times but the guys that disagree claim it`s not based on fair terms...They make a pretty valid point when they say you can`t fight a Sword as hard as you can a Tuna due to their soft mouths..I noticed there are a lot of guys fighting Swords with light drags in the 15 to 25 lb range and in all fairness how long of a fight would you end up being in with a 500 lb Tuna with that light a drag?...Many of the Tuna guys are using 130 lb main line and fighting them throughout the whole fight locked down with at least 50 lbs of drag....I watched Brendan Wing sitting in the fight chair for over 7 hours with 600 lb plus Bluefin using a Tiagra 130W reel and rod combo with 130 lb braid and was up to over 70 lbs of drag....So you have to wonder how much of a difference this would make and I have to ask what are your thoughts about this?...Based on your experience and what you`ve learned about these two fish do you think that would change your opinion which one has greater endurance?@@LocalKnowledge

@@MrGb4ever I totally get where you are coming from, but I still can't agree with you. The swordfish is the stamina king of the ocean. NOTHING I have seen can match their their strength once things settle in and it's an up and down game. The fish I caught with Rush started at 22# of drag and was up over 40# six hours later. I prefer to fish everything with heavier drag. If you're gonna pull a hook, do it early and get it over with. You also have to keep drag #'s in perspective. When we talk drag, I'm talking on scale with a bent rod. Most people guess at drag pressure and never even put a scale to it. It's probably the biggest fallacy in fishing next to fish weights. Another thing to remember is swordfish don't have a soft mouth where the hook goes. The roof of there mouth is crazy soft but the hinge of the jaw is heavy duty. I had to cut the hook out of the fish in this video. Bluefin are a bad ass animal for sure. The only true giants I have caught have been in PEI so they kind of don't count in that shallow water. I will tell you the ones we have been catching here in CA deep water don't even come close. To go further, a 250# pacific BFT is ZERO match for a same size YFT. Our average fight time on a Bluefin that size is 45 min. A Yellowfin would take 1.5 hours. Same anglers, same captains, same gear. Just look at the tails. The YFT has a HUGE motor compared. We have caught dozens of both and there is just no contest. This is no argument. I'm a fishing geek to my core and I love each and every one of the aforementioned species and this reflects my experiences.

First of all I can`t tell you how much appreciate your time and all your feedback...Your detailed information certainly explains a lot...Having the experience and the knowledge you have I was just curious if that ever crossed your mind when it came to comparing the battle with these two fish....And in regards to your battles with Yellowfin and Bluefin in the 250 lb range that doesn`t surprise me one bit...You do realize that`s not really a fair comparison?...Yellowfin Tuna at that weight class are in the prime of their life and possibly at their very strongest weight when a BFT is still very young and has lots growing to do...Tommy Gifford once wrote in Marlin Magazine back in the 80s that each fish is different like people...He wrote that a 600 lb BFT is a lot like comparing it to a 30 year old man...Both in the prime of their life and probably at their strongest...I`ve noticed that to be very true with the Broadbill...It doesn`t seem like Swords less than 100lbs really put up much of a fight all...As a matter of fact, I watched Carter Andrews on the Booby trap catch a 30 to 40 lber on a Stella using 30 lb braid and he landed the fish without hardly any fight at all and truthfully any 30 lb Tuna would have runned circles around it...But you know yourself that once the Swordfish starts to mature and gets a little older look out! Lol...I think Tom Watson said it the best from the Ultimate fishing show, "They are freaks"...Thanks again for all your help..You guys are doing an awesome job and keep up the great work!@@LocalKnowledge

Rush, if you look up a video on here by RJ Boyle he demonstrates what happened on the braid breaking when the first sword was on. The bodies of certain bridged reels have a sharp edge on the inside of the bridge. when you checked the drag pressure you cut the line. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGKzmpSXabukbqM
