Loved the video, often fished the Quarry at Bonawe when I was a young boy, was surprised to see you drive into Kenmore Cottages for the night. Even more gobsmacked when you went into number 12, this was my Aunt`s, Uncle`s and Cousin`s home, my Uncle also worked at the Quarry. Bonawe may have deep cold waters and outstanding views of Cruichan, but I have heart warming family memories of this magical location.

Wow, not only fishing at the Craig but Staying in my old Aunties house where the McLaren Family lived from 1952 to 2014. I was first in this house when I was to weeks old. In September 1962. Any holidays from school we where in 12 Kenmure Cottages, Bonawe. Me, Mum and Dad and three brothers. 6 kids and 4 adults in that house. Not to mention all the other kids in the village who where in and out all day. So, I have known the house, the Loch and the surrounding hills all my life. I had no idea in was a holiday let. Need to go back and stay in the most welcoming Home I have ever been. Great people, friends and families of The Village. Great to see inside again and that view from the fence. The McLarens where the first family to move into Kenmure Cottages and had the choice of which house. No contest. No. 12. Have you guys used the bothy yet, Cadderlie. I met the family who lived there one NewYear after the bells. Most of the men from the village would get into there Small boats and head up the Loch to first foot the settlements around the Loch. No life jackets just booze, coal and a very warm heart. I was when 8 years old I first did this. Wonderful memories of a very special place. Love the video.

I fished a Mark near to the church 8 or 9 years ago with two pals. We were targeting Spurdog and Thornbacks. I caught a 17lb Spurdog that had been tagged. I know how the tagging system works as I used to tag and release Sailfish when I was working in Oman some 20+ years ago. So I took the Tag number and web address to report the catch. A few days later I was by contacted by phone by the Scottish Shark tagging folk who told me congratulations on the catch, however, they then told me that the initial Tag report had not submitted as they had no record of the Tag number. So they logged me as the Initial catcher of this Spur, and the follow up catch... I was quite pleased with that, as the odds for actually re-catching a species that you’ve previously have caught and tag my be very high.. I’m hoping to go again by myself for a few days next year... Great video.... keep on showing us your fishing trips...
@fishingintheukgarywood4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Michael, 17lb that's a decent size spurdog. Do they still tag them? It would be great to catch a taged one.
@mrm90524 жыл бұрын
@@fishingintheukgarywood To be honest I don’t know if they are still tagged, I didn’t even know that there was a tagging programme running when I caught this. One thing it did qualify me for, and that was my shark catch badge from Sea Angler magazine... on that day I also caught a 5lb 12oz Thornback so I managed two qualifiers in one outing! If you do catch a tagged fish, you’ll find a special number for the tag and also contact details for the report. I first learnt about tagging fish, ideally Sailfish back in the 80’s when I had the opportunity to go fishing on a few days off whilst in Kenya, when I was serving in the British Army... great experience. When I was in Oman, thanks to the aid of the Billfish Foundation, I initiated a tagging programme that we used in big competitions... ironically, on the first day, I caught and tagged a 120lb Sailfish on 30lb tackle... tagged and released that and we also had a good Yellowfin of 167lbs, also tagged and released. My boat was only 20ft, and majority of the other boats were 35ft+... but we, my fiancé and me, won first prize in the catch and release section. Won near equivalent of £1500.. . Just proves the case, it’s not what you’ve got, it’s knowledge and experience.... mind you, I never skimp on rods, reels and lures! I swear by the Penn International II Reels, I’ve got 1 x12lb class, 3x 20lb class, 1 x 30lb class and 2 x 50lb class set up, all to IGFA regulations. Reputable and proven lures from the US and Australia and we had some great catches out in Oman, my boat which was called ‘SHAKAS’ which is Arabic for ‘Outsider’.... which it definitely wasn’t had a good reputation... and twenty odd years on I still miss my boat... It served me really well. One of the best for fun to catch out there was a Dorado, or Mahi Mahi... my biggest was a 56lb caught on 20lb tackle.... exceptionally fast and hard hitting fish, and they take off like crazy... they give you a really good fight on light tackle.... really good fun, and superb to eat... one of the very best.... They were a good fishing days to remember, but I’ll be perfectly honest, some days we really struggled to catch anything.. Carol used to get really p.....d off when it was ‘dead’... it would matter what you did... ... it really was a great 6 years fishing experiences.... tight lines..

Great video as always Gary I have a long weekend off work and I am heading to Loch Etive for the first time on Saturday for my first session of the year I have heard a lot of good things about the loch but with it being such a large body of water I wouldn’t know where to start could you recommend anywhere to set up camp for the night preferably at the southern end of the loch as I will be pushed for time as it is !? Also that little stove you had for the kettle looks quality could u tell me where I could get myself one cheers Daryl
@fishingintheukgarywood6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Daryl, we have only camped at a couple of places on the loch. The first place was opposite Ardchattan Church, the second place was the slipway just before Bonawe Quarry to get there you follow the road all the way along to the quarry turn right just before the quarry, follow the road then turn left between the houses follow the road down towards the lock and you should come to the slip way. You could also continue through the quarry and follow the road along keeping an eye out for tracks down to the loch. Have a look on google maps you should be able to spot the places on there. You can get the little solid fuel camping stoves off ebay or amazon amzn.to/2RgmVux. Good luck.
