@@johnspence8141 It's an underground game and they weren't playing table stakes, it was house rules so whatever the gangster wants. At around the time this movie was made I believe there were taxes on gambling winnings and there a lot of ties between gaming and organized crime, so it might've been the only place you could get a real high stakes game off the books. Plus the film is somewhat of a homage to older east end gangster films from the 70s/80s, so it does come across more old fashioned, but this is all wild speculation. At any rate, it's a movie, so pretty much they can make up whatever story they want as long as its somewhat plausible. Someone want to explain me how it was 500,000 grand? It implies Eddie never had a dime in the pot!? Second of all... It went from 100,000 to 250,000.. as far as I am concerned the max Eddie should have in the pot to "see" would be 250 grand, the other coming from Hatchet Harry. As far as I know, Eddie would have to raise it from 250,000 to 500,000 to get that high This never made sense to me at all... Guess why I don't gamble...

everyone there knows that harry is the mob boss, it's his game at his location, and he could destroy them if they said a peep. he could have named any number. they saw he was trapping eddie and kept quiet

500k was the approximate value of the bar eddie's father owns. harry is after the bar

How in the hell do you play 3 card brag?
@Barbarous_Wretch4 жыл бұрын
With your cards close to your chest.
@peterwhitaker713 жыл бұрын
There’s variations but in general, each player gets 3 cards and 3 cards are laid in the middle (sometimes 1 of the community cards is face down). You take turns swapping 1 of your cards for 1 of the community cards to try to make the best hand (having 3 3’s is unbeatable). Then some geezer takes all yer fackin’ money, loans you more and threatens to chop off your Jacobs if you don’t pay what you owe.

is a middle pair such a monster in 3 card brag? youd think there be one raise and call at most??

Man, I haven't seen this in ages. I've seen it so many times but it's been years. I still have it on DVD. Gonna have to dust it off and watch it again.

Not only is this a brilliant scene its also the only female dialog in the film (except for when she says "alright Ed" earlier on Edit: technically the stoned woman also says “BOO!” I don’t know if it counts or not but the Reddit users will happily call me out on it

Going in this movie blind was the greatest move I ever made. I was about to watch a documentary on Guy Ritchie's movies and this movie was mentioned. It looked great but I realised I never saw it. I dropped the documentary and watch the movie instead. Guy as such a way with his cinematography and camera work.

What i never got with this was the maths. Eddie brought 100k. The betting got up to 500 with the original 100 included. So in effect he'd already paid the 1st 100k by buying in, so why did he owe Harry 5? Muggin him right off

Knowing the rules of the game this makes you feel way more anger knowing how he cheated.. cos he didn't beat him by much, just ONE point above.. 7 beats 6 and that's it. However knowing how this movie ends...

Why on earth would Ed agree to borrow money from Harry and call his 500k bet? By this point he knows he only has a pair of 6s and this gangster boss aint gonna risk that much money on a weak hand. If he just folded then he would just walk away empty handed but with huge dangerous bet above his head
