You asked - in my opinion the answer is: Socialist selective prosecution/persecution. If you are in a "priviledged" class, e.g., homeowner, or oppressive race category, then the oppressed who need to take your stuff and home are just squatting - even if years haven't gone by, one weekend is good enough for blue lenient socialist prosecutors. Hope all remember that. And doom for people who live in large blue urban hellholes with corrupt election systems, homeowners in those cities aren't even allowed to vote for change... instead tens of thousands of legal fees and months and months of waiting for a court order... someone caught invading a home after a few weeks even still isn't a "squatter" - historically it took months or years - not someone who moved in while you were away on vacation for 2 weeks, etc.

Criminals now have more rights than law-abiding citizens. I'm in IL way too close to Chicago. It took almost two hours for police to talk a mentally ill homeless woman off of my property Saturday because they are no longer permitted to physically remove or arrest trespassers. She was back by midnight claiming my house was hers, another two plus hours, five officers, paramedics, her ranting the whole time...all of this could have been handled in ten minutes the first time if officers were allowed to do their jobs.

Finally, REAL PROGRESS somewhere on this issue. Squatters need to be removed immediately, forcibly if necessary. By the time the owner has found out, tried to get the police to remove them, court dates - the damage has already been done, and it cost the homeowner tens of thousands of dollars. Fixing damage, utility bills, property insurance, and property taxes on top of legal fees that they'll NEVER be able to recover.

Alabama needs to get with the program, right now this is what google says about Squatters in Alabama.. "In Alabama, a property owner must initiate an eviction process through the court by serving an eviction notice. If squatters do not leave voluntarily, the owner may need to file a lawsuit for eviction, and eventually law enforcement can remove the squatters upon a court order." NY law been around a while. Was supposed to protect renters from shady landlords. But people figured out they can use this law to stay in the apartment. If someone doesnt catch them in 30 days the law says they have the right to keep staying there and the landlord or homeowner can't come in or change the locks. They have to go through a eviction process that takes months. Theres also other things a squatter can do to legally take over the property in NY. I live in ohio and a landlord can have you evicted within 7 days.

Home owners should not have to bare the cost of removing squatters, it should be as simple as showing proof of ownership and the bulbs get arrested for trespassing, burglary and any damage to the property.
