Fun Fact: the reason Gon and Killua had darker skin during the Hunterpedia was because this episode aired during back to school time for children so the creators colored them with sun tans

A fun little fact is that some japanese people can get really, REALLY tanned. Like, my grandma from the japanese side of the family actually has darker skin than some of my black friends purely because she lives on the coast and likes to go fishing a lot. The problem with this episode of Hunterpedia (as well as that one episode of My Dress-up Darling) is that Japanese audiences see that and they instantly think "oh, they sunbathed a lot this summer", while western audiences immediately think of black face actors (because we have this horrid little background, particularly in the Americas). It is not malice, just a different set of concerns because the manga and anime industry still think of Japan as their primary market. Think of it as the same as western media nonchalant use of skull imagery (even with cartoony depictions) that is taboo for some other cultures. It just goes over our heads and become a problem when we try to market abroad.

I do think there's a cultural thing where, even in Europe, when people who mostly see white people see darker skin tones, they just think, oh, slightly tanned. Which in the summer, it often is. There are loads of people who it just wouldn't occur to me might be black, unless they happen to say it. Though their tan is quite extreme.
@rafaelcalmon28587 ай бұрын
Thanks for bringing this stuff up 😁 It's important to clarify this kind of thing because a lot of cancel stuff we see end up being people mistaking cultural differences for other things. For example, black face is a concept nobody here in Brazil has, except for those who are knowledgeable about american culture. So around here the average reaction would likely be more similar to the japanese audience. And in the end a nation's culture isn't gonna change to adapt to another nation's culture, whether it's western to eastern or vice versa. So I believe it falls to us who want to experience things from that culture to learn more about them as we enjoy their content 😁 And hopefully no more of Brock's Jelly Filled Donuts 😂
@cristianotsurudaprocopio87577 ай бұрын
@@rafaelcalmon2858 Oh, I am also brazilian, and as far as I know black face is very much chunned over here too (and probably is in every country with a native black population that came here from the atlantic slave trade). Though not as extensive and well documented as USA's, we do have a history with black face in theater and TV and it is not pretty. I believe we can and should point out and educate on these issues if possible. For example, a lot of brazilian characters nowadays veer much closer to reality and are better researched than what we had way back in the day, and that is the result of information being easier to find and authors consulting with knowgeable people. And I much rather things stay that way than to return to 70s and 80s era of "jungle everywhere, lambada, samba and football Brazil". We stan our Blanka nowadays, but it kinda stung that he was our only rep back in Street Fighter 2. tl;dr: If Togashi painted the kids black to pass as black characters, it would be fucked up, even if he had no ill will. But no, it was just the anime making them tan because of the end of summer vacation, when this episode aired.

Fun fact about the subs: While they keep it pretty PG with "Chain User", in japanese they use "Kuusari Yaroo" with Kuusari meaning "Chain" and Yaroo being a dispregiative that can be translated to "bastard" or "son of a bitch", so they are literally call Kurapika "Chain bastard"

Yeah fun fact they’re not black they’re tan. Japan has the weird tendency to show characters that are supposed to be east asian as being lily white so when they depict the pretty common occurrence of Japanese people tanning and being really dark they go from being PASTY to DARK. Definitely a culture shock moment for western audiences.

The guy who played Dalzollene (Dio's voice actor) is Takehito Koyasu and also voiced characters in YuYuHakusho and Level E which where both created by the same creator as Hunter X Hunter. He is also in a ton of other series and movies from more serious series like Initial D to fanservice series like Highschool DxD.

When you see how people approach nen fights in the later parts of the show it really makes the shadow beasts look like a bunch of amateurs/idiots who just stumbled on a job opportunity and tried to fake till you make it. Or maybe they never had to fight anyone with a strong nen so they got pretentious. You never see them trying to figure out what their targets can do, they just go all in and throw their ability like it's league of legends. It's really not a surprise that they got bodied off screen. They're a bunch of losers.
