A teenager discovers her friends' group chat.
LOCKER ROOM is used with permission from Greta Nash. Learn more at gretanash.com.
A teen student named Carla discovers a secret chat group that her male friends have -- a chat where they share nude or titillating photos and videos of unconsenting girls among themselves, and rate them in a particularly degrading way.
Presented with a moral and social quandary, Carla knows what she has to do. But doing it may mean losing her friendships with the boys she calls her friends.
Writer-director Greta Nash's short, searing drama tackles a very current issue, but from a unique perspective: rather than looking at it from the POV of a perpetrator or a survivor, the story looks at sexual harassment and discrimination from the role of the bystander.
But with its taut, focused yet emotionally complex script and beautifully sensitive camerawork, Nash's film looks at this hot-button topic with great intelligence and subtlety. Carla is a fully realized character, who feels a clear rapport with her male friends. Among these friends, she feels she belongs and is respected, although that dynamic may be changing, especially as they get deeper into adolescence and the hormones begin to kick in.
But when she discovers the secret chat, she realizes that whatever egalitarianism and acceptance she may feel could be an illusion -- and her gender may indeed exclude her in both subtle and powerful ways in the future, especially as boys become men and girls become women, complete with social roles and expectations. She begins to wonder why the boys don't sexualize her, but she also feels uneasy and "gross," as she says, about what's happening. The performances of the young cast, especially by lead performer Bridie Noonan, are sensitively rendered and well done, and take care not to demonize or idealize any position.
How Carla navigates her discovery poses powerful questions about how gender and power work in the most emotional and intimate ways -- not just in the realm of romance, but in our search for belonging, connection and finding a place in the world where we feel respected, seen, heard and understood. Carla carries a heavy burden -- she knows what the right thing to do was, but she risks ostracization from the group of friends she values most. The film doesn't at all flatten her concerns, and makes clear the costs of what choice Carla eventually makes.
LOCKER ROOM is powerful, thought-provoking and memorable because, in some sense, we are all bystanders in this era of awareness -- and often must weigh the costs of speaking up vs. staying silent. Through the lens of one character's journey, we understand the small and insidious ways that oppression and domination work, especially in the realm of everyday life and emotion. In the end, the conclusion of the film is both deeply sad, subtly dark but also quietly hopeful -- much like a lot of discussion that surrounds the film's issues in general.

It is sad because boys in my school are also like this and my father was abusive as well.. & now my hate for boys is just increasing day by day and I'm not able to help it. edit: To the people who are saying "i won't be able to find a king" let me tell you I'm not into men anyways. Edit (1 year later): Alright so I've worked on this internalised hate towards men and now i don't think necessarily all men are bad people. There are just some bad men and women out there, there are gonna be bad PEOPLE out there, it's not a gender thing. Genuinely great men exist. Just felt like sharing it:)

It was implying that they drugged her and then were assaulting her when she was out of it. They didn't just lift her skirt, they were starting to touch her inappropriately and then the guy walked in. We don't have to see it acted out to know what the implication was. Then they were also filming, uploading, and laughing about the assault on the girl.

Absolutely, this is the exact sense in which we differ from animals. Adolescence doesn't give one any excuse and/or reason to commit such atrocities. My best guy friends were the “social rejects” in school and even at church because they wore black clothes and metal jewelry, constantly making mischief and generally had issues with authority - the EXACT opposite of who I was, which puzzled adults and peers constantly. These same guys also held a very strong code of ethics and morals, especially towards women. I was always protected, never put into any awkward situation, and they never laid a finger on me even when we argued. The “normal” guys, however, the high-achieving social princes, kept trying to sleep their way through the student body and one even tried to sneak into my hotel room on a class trip - but was blocked by one of my friends before I even found out. Years later one of my “troubled” friends married my best friend and they have an amazing marriage with two beautiful daughters. Finding out how horrible most guys can be made me eternally grateful for my friends!!

I agree. It's bad to generalize, but the popular boys (particularly on sports teams) tend to experience more male-to-male, homogeneous comradery that acts as an echo-chamber for their worst ideals. Less popular kids who don't tend to hang out in hordes and focus a bit more on character to unite them than athletic ability or caste tend to be forced to see more diverse viewpoints, in addition to the missing "popularity net" that allows others room in disrespect. Specifically the kids who don't participate in party culture AND aren't socially popular or are considered troubled tend to have strong senses of justice.

Please dont use the word 'most'. I do thank you for not generalizing all men, but theres easily more good men than bad men in the world. And sadly, the good deeds of the good men are never revealed anywhere, while the bad deeds are spread everywhere. Every news station is eager to catch the bad deeds done by men. This unfortunately causes every man to be generalized, with the bad deeds far out shadowing the good deeds.

I had an experience like hers, my male friends had a group on instagram when one of them logged on my phone, I was curious if they talked about me there, and i found lots of my closest male friends saying horrible things about their female friends intimate parts (mine too), and how they kept looking at our bodies during classes. I told my friends cause I wanted them to not trust in them, not be comfortable around them, because they had second intentions for our hole friendship. We stopped talking to them, but as time passes they were returning to be friends with them. I’m still worried for them but I can’t do much about it. I’m no longer friends with them, and I do not wish to be ever again. That’s my story! (Sorry for the bad english)

@@itsvale6371being afraid of men is not sexist. It would be sexist to think they’re lesser than or deserve less rights than women, which clearly nobody does, because men as a group have always had more opportunities and rights than women, even today. I am afraid of men, I carry a knife with me because of it, and it’s saved my life. I would never want men to be subjugated or to not have the same rights as everyone else, but I don’t want them around me and will avoid them as much as possible. Self preservation isn’t hate. I will always be polite and kind to anyone in public, I just never seek out anything from men if I don’t need to. Well, have you tried looking from another perspective of those situations? If it's every single time, then maybe the boy isn't the 100% problem every time( not saying that the boy wasn't the problem or that they didn't cause any issues or anything, I don't know what you experienced ). There are too many factors that go into conflicts, they are never as one dimensional as a movie film like this. It's possible that you have a sort of mentality when going into your friendships with guys that influence guys to act whatever ways they do, I'll never know and you'll never know unless you go and try to look at the situations from another perspective.

My sister had to go through the same experience in high school, except she was the friend and the target. She even dated one of the guys that did this to her because he had the same bahavior than Finn in the video (the one that's the closest to carla), saying he did not take part in it and all while not stopping his friends... My sister was so grossed out when she found out, she didn't even want to tell me at the time because she wanted to preserve me from this all. She told the school which said they "couldn't do anything" and they graduated as if nothing had happened. Her ex got her hospitalized because of how bad he treated her and how toxic he was. Her hospitalization was one of the scariest thing i've had to experience and i never would wish such bad treatment to anyone. If you’re a young girl and don’t understand why your parents are so protective of you more than a boy/brother, this is why. Now I’m not saying all boys are like this but your parents just don’t want you to have that risk. Boy teenagers are lesser mature than girls at that stage in life, and sometimes they’re very desperate. You’re a strong, independent and intelligent, don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise.

Yeah but at the same time parents encourage it and let them do whatever they want. Boys should have limits too not just be "a lost case" and let him go around doing whatever.

Sadly relatable, I overheard some guy friends talk disgusting stuff about some of their female friends once. I didn't hear them talk about me (not that it matters, still disgusting to talk about any friends like that) but I couldn't get that idea out of my head after that and our friendship died off because I realized they didn't respect women at all

Whats the deal with rating women? I do it all the time. Nothing bad about that except that I myself is like a soft 3 on a good day, classified as certified "ugly" and all the girls are at least up there in the "cute" range so Ill really have to find a desperate girl lol. Jk, I never numerically rate girls but they are all cute.

Comments say ending should have been better. I say that's a perfect ending like how life is. No one helps in fighting our battles. You are actually left all alone in the field of life how she was left alone. Facing our own battles alone. Just a friend to hug that's all. Thats reality. Good one Omeleto.

There are more guys that do this sort of thing than there are guys who don't. It's so sad. No matter how a boy is raised he can still fall in with a group who does these sorts of harmful acts. I did my best with my son. He did get bullied & picked on because he stood up for what was just decent. It got so bad that I had to home school him. Just because he wouldn't be a pig, the way the other guys were.

You're a great mother and you have such a wonderful son who stuck with his morality as long as he could endure the pressure, I hope both of you are doing well. I'm not a mother so I can only try to imagine the stress you are put under to make sure your children are raised right in a world where so much of it is nasty.

My husband and I have discussed at length how to raise our children to respect everyone and either distance themselves from or put a stop to poisonous behavior of their classmates. We must have some very uncomfortable conversations with our children to turn them into decent human beings.

@@juliamyrie6881 what's false about it? Are you just in denial? Cyberbullying rates have been rising for years, and studies show that almost every single teenager has been bullied or harassed online in some way. As well as this, once a video has been posted online, nobody owns it. That video could lurk for years, messing up that person's reputation and chance at a good life.
