I’ve got a Centre diff locker and a full time traction control in my Prado 120 series. The moment i’ve realised front and rear diff lockers are better than traction control was when my wheel speed sensors got clogged with a mud in the last hard mud drive. The advantage of lockers is that they are not rely on electronics so their function isn’t affected by a mud contamination.

I did a short film of my disco 2, TC vs front and TC vs rear. I got heaps of criticism from the land rover community saying I needed to drive it better. what I have learned since having the lockers and driving several cars is that all TC systems are not equal. not even close, and my personal opinion is that a single locker with TC in a older car should be enough for anything expect hard core wheeling. the newer TC modes in jeeps (grand jeep) and land rovers is really impressive. I'm not even sure you could run a traditional locker in those newer cars anyways.

I have never needed a front locker except for rock crawling. I tried the computerized locker experiment with an LR3 and discovered it was fantastic for moderate wheeling but there’s no replacement for the brute force traction of a locker. The computer will often times simply take way too long to figure things out which caused you to lose momentum and get stuck. I think the ideal is to have both systems if possible.
@BenMitro
@BenMitro 5 жыл бұрын
The computer does take too long, so that means one has to modify ones driving style, with TC you have to be patient and hope the track isn't screwed too much while the TC wipes its bum.

Good video with a great example. My FSJ Cherokee has aftermarket selectable lockers on both axles. It's the best setup but more expensive. Also has a twin stick TC that allows me to select which axles get power, even in low range. Lots of shifters and switches but the flexibility is worth it. Your advice about spinning the tires is spot on. I have seen more broken axle shafts from wheels spinning and then grabbing than any other scenario.

Ok speaking from experience here, it's not the same. I have an N80 hilux (current model) that comes with a rear locker and traction control and I 4x4 a fair bit. I recently got a Harrop E-locker for the front diff and I can tell you it's a completely different beast. Much more capable now. I find traction control is good in H4 if you have a long steep incline that you can get some momentum on. Also, traction control automatically switches off in L4 (and you have to be in L4 to engage the rear diff).

Agree nothing beats lockers but a GOOD tc system can work great. Look at the landcruisers. Even within Mitsubishi’s range, the Pajero has a much better tc than the triton. No idea why though. The Pajero just grabs the spinning wheel right away and stops all the wheel spinning rubbish and drives on forward. Why can’t they tune the triton the same way? I mean it’s just abs and wheel speed sensors yet it can’t seem to grab the spinning wheels with enough force to stop them and send the power elsewhere. Is it a software thing or is the abs motor not stuck ing enough to brake with sufficient force? Always made me wonder. Ford ranger are the same. They sit there and spin for ages before the tc does anything.

Later models of Ford Everest, Y62 can apply traction control to front while diff locked in rear. Traction control in all cars need time to activate and this can be a problem with momentum. With just rear lock, it is possible to lift front wheel and traction control keeps this wheel quiet so that it does not cause damage while landing to cv or other drive line components. With twin locked, it is possible to use much less momentum to cross an obstacle and much less front wheel lift. Driving with more than necessary momentum with twin locked will cause damage.

Aussie's ARBLocker are the best aftermarket diff lockers! I just order a pair of Max Trax for my 5th 4runner SR5 4x4 btw. Also I'm wanting to get ARB lockers eventually although expensive :) The only advantages traction control have over diff lockers is that it won't affect steering capability. With rear AND front diff locked it is super hard to steer and turn to the direction that you are wanting to turn.

A few things, the triton has 29 inch tyres and less flex which means less wheel travel to allow the wheels to fully plant on the ground which the cruiser was going so well with bigger 31 tyres, flex from coil and leaf sprung suspension. The triton struggled with limited wheel travel especially because it's ISF. The triton can be rectified with sway bar removal and upgraded suspensions to allow full limits of traction control. I have one and currently running 33s with 2 inch lift and no sway bar and keeps up with the big boys

Their super select 4WD is pretty nifty, but, I don't understand why they have a 2H option at all? When I drove a Mitsu, last year, it was new as well, the difference in fuel economy in 2H vs 4H (open center diff) was so negligible that it seemed pointless to use it in 2H at all. Their traction control system... eh... not so sold on that. I've driven 4WD's with better, TC systems. Toyota's is very good I rate theirs highly. But, for me, I have yet to drive a vehicle that outperforms Land Rover's current generation of TC systems, the way it combines TC and locking diff's is absolutely masterful!

the way I look at this: a on road safety feature has very little to no business being off road.. your video illustrates this very well.. the Idea of traction control is to stop wheel slip under aquaplane condition.. the only off road a traction control should go on is a maintained unsealed road, as the above video illustrates you are taking a on road only vehicle and trying to do off road applications with it and all but fail....

Traction control is only as good as how smart the software is, how fast it picks up wheel spin and applies the brakes, if it runs a PID loop etc, and of course only as good as how much force the brakes can apply, stock brakes can only apply so much force, on a steep incline that’s angled to the side you might have a lot of force on the wheel with traction and the brakes not able to equalise that force on the opposing wheel
@sukant08

I have to disagree though, 4runner's ATRAC system grabs the free spinning wheel in similar situation and it has already proven to be more effective than open diff 80 series LC. Although i understand that true locks are superior brake assisted limited slip systems have its place when it works. I am not sure whether this car has it on rear or not.

Again that is your opinion and cannot argue with the effectiveness of true lock. However, ATRAC saved my ass few times in real life situations including mud, snow and steep hill with diagonal holes on the road where open diff would only dream about. This has been true to me on my 4runner 07 can't comment on other cars.

I find the Traction Control in my Triton totally useless in sand. Especially being manual how it saps your acceleration therefore you loose momentum and stall it or/and now your stuck. Would be good if it applied brake to the wheel but didn't throttle cut. You probably wouldn't notice it too much in the auto with the torque converter but in a manual for sand you always want it off. That's the only time I've thought lockers would be better than the Mitsu TC.
