Kitty didn't LEAVE the X-Men. She was injured in a battle with the Marauders, along with Nightcrawler. She was dissipating quickly and couldn't un-phase. Moira helped her regain control, and at that time, the X-Men seemingly died (they actually were resurrected by Roma and set up base in Japan). Kitty, along with Rachel Summers, Nightcrawler, Captain Britain, Meggan and a few others formed Excalibur.
