If we could get full equipped f-35 and all needed for maintenance, we would also need at least 90 of them because many is always in maintenance. If that can be get with 10bn€. I would totally back this plane for Finland next fighter plane.

They're not always in mx. Current production F-35As generate very high FMC rates even compared to legacy fighters. They're in the 70-92% FMC rate in USAF service, including conditions ranging from Alaska to Qatar in the Middle East.

@@heikkisallinen9012 Gripen was the first design the Finnish Defense Minister said wouldn't work back in 2014. Saab updated as much of the Gripen as they could with a limited budget and made the Gripen E (still in development as we speak). It falls so short that Saab is offering a Gripen/Global Eye AWACS combo to compensate for the lack of SA. F-35 network automatically provides AWACS capabilities that exceed dedicated AWACS platforms, with none of their vulnerabilities. Because JSF are closer to the fight, they have better angular resolution in RF and IR spectrums with the most advanced AESA and IR sensors currently deployed. An AWACS can see 4 TGTs off in the distance at hundreds of km. F-35 net sees 3 Su-27s and an Su-35, their exact altitudes, their vectors, sensor emission profiles, and even multispectral imagery of the aircraft with their external stores. The F-35 net does this acting like ghosts in the air with no detectable signature at range. It also will be coordinated and networked with Royal Norwegian Air Force F-35As covering the North, and more of the Baltic with Poland's F-35s to the South. That would give Finland unprecedented early warning of any approaching Russian threat air and sea assets from the North, East, and South covering all of Scandinavia and Baltics, without Finland needing to join NATO. Gripen E and Global Eye would be limited to less capable data links that have questionable interoperability with Norway and Poland, and wrong strategic direction (West) interface with Sweden. F-35 is plug-and-play with a North Continental Early Warning coverage that exceeds the imagination. The Israelis first saw this with their F-35s when they climbed past 1700m altitude, where they could see ships in the Mediterranean, airlines in their corridors, Russian fighters over Syria, Turkish F-16s, Jordanian F-16s, Saudis, Iranian missile batteries in Syria, Syrian radar stations and SAM sites, all with appropriate symbology with neutral/friendly/threat colors and shapes. You don't get anywhere near that level of strategic awareness and interoperability with Global Eye/Gripen E. Gripen E is extremely vulnerable to Su-35S and Su-57, and will only get more vulnerable as Su-57 production trickles into the Russian VVS.

As for interoperability, both Sweden and Finland are NATO partners and have multilateral defense co-operation also between all Nordic airforces. So I don't think coordinating and sharing information will be too much of a problem even with Gripen with countries like Poland and especially Norway. However compared to Gripen, F-35 is very maintenance heavy. According to Finnish war war time doctrine, fighters will be dispersed to roadbases, which have no hangars. How do you think prolonged operations from such condition will affect the performance of F-35 ?

Cooperation on paper does not equate to interoperability as an actual NATO member, where radios, comms, logistics, and contingencies are all agreed upon. Finnish wartime doctrine has changed dramatically as well, recognizing the developments over the past 20 years. F-35 partnership bypasses NATO membership with a direct technical plug-in without having to join NATO as a member state, which has always been a hot national political topic in Finland that would escalate Russia's defense posture against Finland. Russia sees Finnish membership in NATO as an offensive move strategically, placing Saint Petersburg within strike distance of long range fires, while allowing deployment of TBM and ICBM defense systems potentially. Gripen E will be able to share its limited sensor data via lower-grade data link networks, but doesn't provide anywhere near the level of networked SA the JSF does and isn't survivable against even S-300, let alone S-400. Then add in Su-35 and Su-57, and Finnish Air Force would suffer unacceptable attrition within 24hr, opening the door for dedicated strike and bomber aircraft to do whatever they wanted to. One of the main requirements discussed in the FDF HX program is an A2A overmatch where the kill ratios must be extremely high in Finland's favor. Gripen E is the least capable platform of them all in this regard due to it being 4th Gen RCS/IR sig, with extremely limited A2A payload and limited ability to fight in the interceptor flight levels for BVR. It has limited persistence and a turn-tail profile that invites even older Sukhois to run it down. Wheezing at FL350-FL450 doesn't maximize the Meteor WEZ profile, so the Rafale and Typhoon easily outclass the Gripen in that upper altitude band realm. F-35 even with older AIM-120C exceeds the WEZ profile of the Eurocanards with Meteor because it does VLO intercepts and higher fidelity networked midcourse guidance, delaying the activation of Russian RWR systems once the active seeker goes hot. Prolonged operation from disbursed road bases will slowly erode the FMC rates of any fighter, including the Gripen. Prolonged use from road bases assumes that a campaign will last long. Either way, F-35As and F-35Bs have been operating from austere basing for years now. The more complex F-35B enjoyed twice the readiness rates as the AV-8B flying off an even more difficult and harsher environment from LHDs in combat over 6 months in CENTCOM. If you read the FDF HX open source documents, they recognize that every single entrant will require significant basing costs that are a significant percentage of the program budget. A big mistake people make when looking at F-35 maintenance is total JSF program numbers lumped together, or total service fleet numbers that include the early Lot birds. A current production F-35A is a different airplane compared to Lots 1-7. A lot of the improvements were retrofitted to some of the earlier aircraft, and those costs have been thrown in as mx costs, even though they will never be done to production birds over the past several years that were made with the improvements out of the gate. The main thing maintainers are complaining about right now is spares, which is common to every fighter program during the first several years of higher rate production. There are guys who came from F-16 that complain they don't get their hands dirty anymore chasing wiring harnesses, because the F-35 is mostly fiber-optic and maintains itself for the most part. The main mx demand is VLO systems at certain mx intervals that require opening the top central fuselage panels. The RAM application has been even more ruggedized and is CNC-applied at the factory now. The main concern for extended austere operation would be some degradation in RF VLO, but what threat air assets would be generating after 24hr of F-35A slaughter? If you ever get a chance to look at the Russian VVS military districts in the regional proximity to Finland, they are very lacking and austere, limited/no hardened shelters, exposed permitter defense radars, extremely vulnerable to a JSF force. They only have a certain number of fighters they can allocate to Saint Petersburg regional, since Russia has the largest ADZ patrol demand of any nation on earth. Reinforcements would just be deploying to another slaughter. The attrition would be so high, it wouldn't make sense for them to ever launch air attacks, which is the whole point of deterrence. Gripen wouldn't really deter them since it fails to even compare well in the older kinematic metrics that matter when you limit yourself to a high RCS/IR signature. It has the 2nd worst climb rate of all the candidates (Super Hornet is the worst by far at 45,000ft/min), the smallest payload in both fuel and weapons, and one of the lowest T/W ratios. There are a lot of claims about its ability to operate from austere environments with quick turnaround, but it has no operational experience from which to make this claim. Modern campaigns with long-range surface-to-surface missiles, ISR drones, satellites, sub-launched cruise missiles, networked IADS, LO/VLO switch-role fighters, and cyber-attacks need decisive combat systems to eliminate as many of the threats within compressed time schedules. Gripen E would weaken the Finnish defense posture across these domains because it is a comparative low performer in air combat with no real cross-domain capabilities to enhance the total force like the JSF does. If you compare it to 1980s-1990s capabilities, it would offer a poor nation something great, but most systems have undergone major changes since then with net-centric warfare, multi-mission/omnirole fighters, multi-spectral IADS with more layers, UCAVs, ISR drones, etc. Only the JSF is structured to deal with these kinds of threats and the natural developments of emerging threats into the future.

As the commander of the Finnish air force quite honestly stated: many harder performers (kovempia rasseja)was left ashore. In my opinion also Rafale would have been no 1 alternative as fighter jet with military performance. Probably It and Eurofighter were politically dropped before the 3 finalists. I have a feeling that all finns wish peaceful times to prevail, so also the politicians who made this decision. They know more than us of the political factors. We, the ordinary public on the other hand may sometimesa even understand military performance matters better than military itself. At least I would prefer friendly but independent relations with Russia. I like thei art and food but not their political incination after they get together. Also I do not like their language. As a natuion now that this decision has been made we need to stand behind it and support it whether it was to our personal liking or not. Also Pohjanmaa 4 new minifrigates design was not very satisfactory naval militarily except we got in oversized hulls a little of everything and notjing relally performing except the israeli Gabriel V surface skimming naval and even land attack missiles. The evolved sparrows fly absolutely too low vertically to believable defense. We would have needed something like Aster 30. Tha main gun. Bofors 57 mm is just ridiculous for a war ship. Most much smaller !"gun boats" use 76 mm rapid fire gun. We need to live ion wishes that navy and state rectifies those initial saving mistakes and constructs cheaper singularly more effective fast missile or even torpedo boats that can hide in the archipelago and easily construxted naturally radear reflecting visible surfaces. I write these facts only because they are facts but otherwise support the military and government as long as their main aim is to guarantee our independence and democracy among the free nations like European nations. Su-57's N036-1-01 has 1552 TRMs. Su-57 is LO, not VLO, but carries weapons internally and therefore has a smaller frontal RCS than a combat-equipped Rafale, Typhoon, or Gripen E. It has the next largest AESA after the F-35, so its likelihood of a first-look/first-shoot against any of the Eurocanards is to be expected and planned for. It also has more RF and IR sensors distributed around the airframe like an F-35, with side-looking AESA radars in the nose in addition to the main AESA under the radome. The more I look at the Su-57, it seems to be geared towards out-classing any of the Eurocanards, while trying to meet F-22 kinematics. With the current motors, they are unable to meet F-22 supercruise or climb rate, but that airframe and the older motor outclass the EF and Rafale already. Gripen E isn't even a contender in that space. On top of all this, the Rafale unit costs and basing costs are the highest. Unit costs are the highest of them all, unless the Typhoon with CAPTOR-E AESA exceeds that. Both are well over 100 million euros and have significant basing/logistics up-front costs. F-35A 2020 unit cost in Lot 14 is 65.6 million Euros ($77.9 million US). Unit cost for 2025 deliveries should be down even more, but up-front basing/logistics facility costs will likely be the highest with the F-35A. The Rafale and Typhoon also have very high initial basic/logistics costs. The F-35A deal will provide the most airframes with the most capability, with the most long-term growth potential, with the best lethality and survivability against threats in the region. It's also the easiest fighter to convert to in training, with the easiest landing and handling characteristics for safety. The Gripen E is the least stable version with higher incidence of crash during landings.
