So my question--say I just bought this lock, and now want to harden it, would a good first pass be to change up the springs (to alter the tension), use longer driver pins, and switch out the key pins so they don't have the dual bevel, and have some security features (spool/serrations)? I have a similar lock from Yale, but with no actual keyway (the "backup" is to hold a 9 volt to the bottom of the lock, or go in through a different entrance) I'm curious if mine has any low skill exploits with magnets or anything, or if the only way to open it without a combination or phone app is by destructive means, and if so, how resistant it is to such means. I'm at relatively low risk of anyone trying break in, but I would feel safer knowing the thing wont just fall apart as soon as someone takes a hammer to it
@snowblood824 жыл бұрын
Strong magnet does nothing? I strongly feel like application of magnets on actuator locks should pull another latch in place that jams operation, and more importantly flag for attempted bypassing.
@johndododoe14114 жыл бұрын
Think of legit users carrying magnets for legit reasons and just checking if the door is properly locked, because it's also their job to lock it. So don't raise alarms for magnets that won't bypass that lock anyway.
@TimNorris20014 жыл бұрын
@@johndododoe1411 I don't think he is saying alarms, just flags. So it wouldn't be annoying someone got near the lock with a magnet, but just a chirp when opening, a counter rotation, or the like to reset if someone had gotten near enough with one. That way when the owner got that he would know to be a vigilant.
@lemster1014 жыл бұрын
This has a stepper motor rotating the lock I think, not an actuator.
@johndododoe14114 жыл бұрын
@@TimNorris2001 Such flags tend to evolve into easily misunderstood lines in security system event logs. Such lines tend to make security personnel check CCTV tapes and confront the innocent with accusations that go on their employment record, resulting in greater risk of later loosing their livelihood. Hence my warning against lock designers starting down that slippery slope.
@TimNorris20014 жыл бұрын
@@johndododoe1411 I can understand your point here, but let's be honest if you were using this lock in the business for something secure, are you not planning on getting it stolen? This is a consumer grade lock, offers no master keying in default and only needed 3 of 5 pins to be picked, the pins were poorly machined, and double tapered. If you bought this for a home, like it was designed, then it wouldn't be able to cost someone a job, and the homeowner would have a bit more security for attempted break-ins. Don't get me wrong, if that homeowner tied it to an alarm then the function would need to be disabled.

I know very little about locks and I didn't really understand the problem or how having a longer pin would solve it. Would appreciate an explanation if you know
@NirateGoel4 жыл бұрын
A longer pin would mean that the pin is positioned between the core on the outer cylinder stopping the core from turning. When a key is put in the top pin should be driven into the outer cylinder allowing the lock to turn, but on that lock it wasn't nesceay.
@williamjones44834 жыл бұрын
@@limiv5272 The so called shear line is the space between the rotating lock cylinder and the stationary housing. Each part contains a number of pins. In order to secure the rotating part from turning except with the proper key, the pins must extend above the shear line into the stationary housing. The pins are made to such a length that when a key is inserted into the lock cylinder they will create their own shear line and let the cylinder rotate to unlock. Here is a video that shows a training lock and how they work. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2OufGCrf7OVo7s

Yale does make a version of this lock that does not have a keyway at all. It's the Yale Real Living T1L series. Without a keyway at all, the lock is therefore not pickable physically. They make them with Z-Wave compatible wireless if you want, but if you want no wireless at all, you can easily remove the Z-Wave module, and then the lock only works with the keypad. Backup opening capability for dead batteries is provided by two contacts on the bottom of the outside of the lock. You can hold a 9V battery up to the contacts to power up the lock, then enter your code to unlock it. I have used these on my home for 5 years now and they work remarkably well. I recommend multiple sets of rechargable AA batteries, as the locks will go through them rather quickly.

How is the bidding chosen for these mass produced locks? This might happen a lot and nobody knows?

All a company has to do is meet the agreed upon specifications. If a specification is met, the machining not looking good doesn't matter.

Wow! Any videos coming on the Lockly Secure Plus? I'd like to see how easy that one is, the fingerprint and coding looks great, but I have doubts about the key lock.

Geez, you picked that faster than my Yale Assure lock opens when I've entered the code. Fortunately, mine does not have a keyed backup (it provides a place to charge it with a 9 volt if the batteries die).

Wow, that's a huge error. Great videos as always, LPL, and take care.

Don't like how that key looks identical to the one on my Yale lock... time to visit the hardware store!

LPL sounds like he's wearing a mask. Even though the lock doesn't even show much lol

I have the keyless variant of these I would be curious on your thoughts on those?

We all can guess the amount of security once he said smart lock
@IncertusetNescio4 жыл бұрын
I swear the the amount of circuitry a lock has inversely correlates to the security strength of the physical lock. The more there is, the weaker the lock hardware.
@karlashley86804 жыл бұрын
Really, that holds true with most systems - the more complicated the electronics, especially electronics talking to each other, the less secure it is. Like with a computer, only real way to keep its data secure is to keep it unplugged inside a secure location.
@tortex14 жыл бұрын
@@karlashley8680 Maybe, but this wasn't a "the electronics are really easy to bypass/manipulate" case, but a "the physical lock is crap, 'good job' yale" case. Which is just sad, but not surprising.

And if not that, when he said Kwikset keyway

Somehow I have got the impression that "smart lock" means "no need to damage the door"
@ImGumbyDangit4 жыл бұрын
I was really surprised to hear you say it had a kwikset keyway. Then only needing to pick three pins. YIKES.
@khloeprower60874 жыл бұрын
I'm curious as to why a Kwikset keyway was in a Yale lock to begin with? Most of their cylinders can be popped open with a strongly worded prayer.

Locks on home doors are just for looks anyway! A slight hip check to most front doors will open them right up.. unless you have strengthened the door frame where it makes contact. I've always thought what a joke door frames are for security!

Once I saw your first video show up in my feed, I have been going back through your past videos. Is a cheap banggood set still considered the way to start learning or ? Thanks.

I started with the Banggood set of picks. It's perfect to begin with. However don't buy the disc detainer pick from them

Wow you are very good. It would be nice if you could recommend a good lock. Maybe do a locks review. Well done
@Bobaganusche724 жыл бұрын
Does he ever recommend door locks that are hard to pick, or just show off ones with design flaws?
@kennethhicks21134 жыл бұрын
A couple times but check his vid's as he's just about picked every lock in existence.
