Definitely some good tips here that I think boil down to figuring out which features of the keyway are the prominent/important ones and which ones are common to several choices. I'd argue some of the hardest to ID are some of the mulitplexed Corbin, Russwin, and Corbin Russwin keyways. Like, good luck with the 8 somehow-not-identical keyways in the H-Class! A tip I'd add if you don't have the cylinder at your counter (or even if you do): Take a couple of really clear photos that you can zoom in on, and use that to really look at those little wards and grooves as you compare to the book or image. Otherwise, a jeweler's loupe and good lighting will help with the smaller details. For instance, I just had to ID one of Russwin's N-class keyways. There are 28 choices, with 14 of them obverse and the other 14 the reverse of those. They all have the same basic configuration of wards and grooves (unlike Best that can be categorized into the three categories of this video). Once I worked out that it was one of the reversed variety (so 15-28), what finally got me to the answer was the two tiniest wards (one on either side) at the mid-point. From keyway to keyway their location relative to each other and the direction they "point" up or down changes. I did end up having to take photos and zoom despite the cylinder being in my hand so I could make out which way those wards "pointed". (it was N17, btw.)

Got a chart for padlocks? I'm just a hobbyist who is fascinated by mechanisms, and I'm trying to work out the keyways in my small collection, mainly to order Lishi tools. I was most disappointed when I bought the M1/M2 one and discovered it only fits Master No. 3 keyways, which don't exactly need it. None of my other Master locks have M1/M2 keyways, not to mention the other brands.

I have an old Corbin lock that looks like it should take a CO7 bu t it doesn't. The key fits in a C07 lock but it is higher up the tree. The key is marked 101EN. It's an Osco key. I have studied the Crorbin manual and know that the key system is a bit like mastering, where one key can fit all other key ways. Wish to heck I could identify the blank. I'm probably going to figure out how to replace the cylinder so I can make dupes.
