I learned something new today. I'm at that point in life where unknown and underrated engines are become more intersting and fascinating. That little 2-4-0 tender engine is one my favorites list. Thank for you for the history Jim. Keep up the great work.

Great little video Jim, really happy to have helped you with this, and especially on what is my favorite class of engine from the Great Eastern Railway.

Here's a bit more information about No. 490. She was painted in GER Blue, seeing as she was a passenger engine as well as a goods engine and was fitted with air and vacuum brakes. GER Black was reserved for goods engines, which were not fitted with air or vacuum brakes until the T77 Class (LNER J19 Class) 0-6-0s of 1916. The main exception to this was the Y14 Class (LNER J15 Class), of which some were fitted with steam and vacuum brakes. The surviving member of this class, No. 564, which was built at Stratford in March 1912, is one of those engines. Also, when my partner and I last went to Bressingham, we found out that Stratford Works did a very good job when it came to restoring not just 490 but also S56 (LNER J69 Class) 0-6-0 Tank No. 87. Both locomotives were restored at the same time following their withdrawals. Out of the entire collection at Bressingham, Nos. 87 and 490 could possibly be restored to operational condition if the National Collection would put in the time and effort. In addition, they would be perfect for the standard-gauge demonstration line.

One of her last stamping grounds was the Colchester - Sudbury line when she wasn't running the mini rail tours. A few of her sisterhood were sent north to haul the cross Pennine trains from Northallerton to Penrith, specifically as pilot engines, by the LNER, but 490 never was.

Good news: 3985 and 5511, along with 6936 and other pieces of Heritage equipment, are being donated to the RRHMA. This means 3985 will get another chance!

I saw the news a few hours ago.

@@Jimboliah3985 same, *I was shocked hearing that 3985 would run again and supposedly 5511 would also be restored to operation AFTER 3985* 5511 will be the only steam locomotive running with young valve gear
@davidng23362 жыл бұрын
@@tylergreen4843 that news is even bigger. Finally, 5511 will get to run after collecting dust for so long in the Cheyenne Roundhouse! Now, I wonder what will happen to 838, CNW 401, and any other equipment in Cheyenne that isn’t used anymore.
@chesapeakedproductions30092 жыл бұрын
@@davidng2336 I wouldn't expect another FEF to return to operation. I think 844 is enough, so I don't see 838 going anywhere. Plus that engine is just giving 844 parts. CNW 401 however, now that's different. We haven't seen a CNW engine in operation since 1385, and her restoration here in my home state of Wisconsin is moving slow as snails. We need more Chicago North Western steam locomotives in operation
@davidng23362 жыл бұрын
@@chesapeakedproductions3009 all of 838’s parts are gone at this point. I expect it to be removed and sent for scrap at some point once the time comes, unless someone is willing to do a big miracle. And yes, the more CNW locomotives, the better!

As far as preserved british 2-4-0 tender engines go I'm more of a MR 158A fan but I can still appreciate one from my personal favorite pre LNER constituent railway
@candycrushhater58282 жыл бұрын
You should do a Loco Profiling episode on GWR 4920, LSWR 53, and LMS 8624. Sorry for the recommendations, but I just love your British steam engine episodes.

Gotta admit Jim, great April fools joke. And as an American, I can't stand Poppet valve gear either for the same reason you don't like it either. It's an absolute clusterfuck to service and maintain and finicky as an overly complicated masterpiece transformer. My personal favorite is Baker valve gear with Walschaerts coming in at a close second. Anyway, great video chap, hope to see another in the not too distant future. And I hope the bullshit you've been dealing with gets better too.
@Jimboliah39852 жыл бұрын
Oh, Type B Poppet valve gear is actually really good, just a simple yet successful rotary camshaft on the outside. And thanks for enjoying.
@ChargerusPrime2 жыл бұрын
@@Jimboliah3985 oh, well my bad then lol. Ooh so that makes it more like the rotary cam valve gear that they're putting on one of the LNER P2 mikados then right? Coolness!

I have much something to say about 490 it's streamlined design is kinda ugly and as for the Great Eastern 490 it's a great but kinda small 2-4-0

I actually like the 490 (probably because it's the only surviving streamlined Hudson, although there were several better examples that could've been preserved.) But yes the poppet valves are godawful
