I really like that you emphasize that making smaller steps at first is better than doing nothing! The one Zero Waste person I spoke with made it seem like since I wasn't doing enough, I might as well not be doing anything at all. She was super intense and her attitude seemed counter productive. I just waned to tell her be happy people are trying...? We're all not wealthy or privileged enough to commit to Zero Waste.

Zoey Mills Yes! Also the idea that you must buy more products is counterintuitive! It's important to use up what we have before making switches otherwise you are just throwing a bunch of useful stuff away. This also applies to clothing in that thrifting even from fast fashion brands is better than nothing cause it gives clothes a second life and avoids throwing it away.

I forget that teabags are often individually wrapped elsewhere in europe, because they're frequently all bundled together in the UK. I think the vast majority of the tea we drink comes in compostable bags, which is cool! We're definitely encouraged to put them in the food/organic waste bins :)

Keeva McQuarry It's pretty gross heating up a plastic tea bag that isn't bpa free and then consuming it though. I still have tea bags kicking around but I just think to myself I'm basically just drinking hot plastic juice.

Hey Lucy, I just wanted to take a bit time out of my day to say you are just such a lovely person! I met you once in real life (we happened to ride the same bus) and I just want to take a moment to let you know you are one of the few beauty bloggers I still actually watch and you are just such a lovely and relatable person both online and real life. I love that you encourage spending less and being conscious of what you consume and the waste it might produce, whereas many other vloggers/bloggers always made me feel like I needed more more more. That and the fact that you really stick to your 'mini series' (e.g. beauty beacons, the pin curl diaries, moving/cleaning vlogs...). Just lovely. Your videos always add a happy little moment to my day, which is just SO appreciated. Keep up the good work! Lots of love from Utrecht!

Single use plastic bags are banned here in California, too. My family uses disposable plastic water bottles, but we recycle them. We're thinking about getting a water filter and using reusable bottles, though . About getting glass Tupperware, I don't know about the Netherlands, but most glass kitchen items in the U.S. aren't shatter resistant, which I think is a major factor for some people in choosing plastic. No one wants shards of glass on the floor.

I was finally able to watch this video! I love how many things you have done, small changes make greater impact in the long run. One thing I've learned about zero waste is that replacing everything that is made of plastic for things made of glass or steel isn't the right mindset, and we would keep consuming just because. As you said, we should use the lunchboxes until they are no longer useful for carrying food (and afterwards, we can rethink their purpose by putting other items in them). Why should we throw away all food containers just because they are made of plastic? We have demonized plastic and to an extent, it is really bad (specially single use!), but if we can reuse those plastic items for almost a lifetime, isn't it the same as using things made of glass and stainless steel that are supposedly made to last? For example, I use my plastic containers from home to buy groceries in bulk stores because they are light weight. I use public transport and busting my back with heavy glass jars isn't the smartest idea, hahaha. On the other hand some tips that might be helpful: if you buy leafy greens, you can wrap those in a clean damp cloth and they will keep fresh for a few more days than if you put them in plastic bags (which release toxins). You can also use orange, lemon and grapefruit peels to make your own house cleaning products: put them in a jar with a vinegar of choice, let them soak for a few weeks and then remove them, it'll make the smell of vinegar a lot better and they provide with extra antibacterial properties. Then, you can mix part of that vinegar with water and some drops of essential oils in a spray bottle and tah-dah! you have a multipurpose cleaner. The left-over peels can be put to dehydrate in the sun and then thrown into the compost heap (citrus peels then to alter pH levels in the compost bin, but you can chop them in small pieces, dehydrate them and then put them in the bin little by little). There are so many other tips and tricks I've learned over the past few years, but writing space is limited, hahaha. Anyways, thank you for this video and for sharing your experiences!

Though I would be interested in giving it a try.

Amazing list, I am a menstrual cup user for a few years now and agree I love them unconditionally! It can be a little bit of a search to find your "best" cup, mainly I think the biggest difference makers are size, hardness, and the biggest one for me is the type of stem I really really like the ones with rings or balls at the end the best way easier to grab imo. I would recommend MeLuna to anyone really best cups, tho I have had issues before with their customer service reps but that's a one off weird story. Also I had no idea to even look for reuseable cling wrap, going to go get some tomorrow thanks!

I loved this video, very informative. I'm working as an au pair in Germany and people here use pretty much all you mentioned in this video, in contrast to my home country, Spain, in which we're all a bit lazier about zero waste. So I'm definitely soaking up all this and carrying it home with me :) Also, to remove makeup, I find it pretty primitive to be wasting cotton pads still! I use a cotton cloth as well, the cheap ones they sell on Primark (they're also very economic!), and I wash them thrice a week. I got a pair of those around a year ago and they're still in perfect state, and I do wear makeup everyday. Thanks to your video about menstrual cups I got myself one as well, and for a period of time I was using it, but somehow I grew uncomfortable about them. I need to try again. Overall, great tips Lucy!

For makeup removal I use oil and Muslin cloth . I wash it daily and once a week a use a bar soap and that removes all the mascara and make up stains(this should work on your reusable cotton pads and beauty blender sponges) Regarding microfiber I know when you wash it gives off plastic into the drains which go into oceans and is bad for fish ... bad for ppl eating the fish . There is a special washing bag you can buy that does not allow that plastic into the drain . Great video and yes all about baby steps

I just moved house and my family and I were freaked out with all the waste and garbage we had. We had a lifetime supply of plastic bags that we divided into recyclable and non recyclable and took them to the centre ourselves, for we didn't know for sure if our old landlords would. Now we've decided to get a few more reusable canvas bags for our groceries and refill bottles of shampoo, hand soap or body wash (my mum and brother are somehow allergic to bar soap 🤷🏻♀️) with the special package thingies that are less waste and usually easier to recycle. I'd love to get a reusable straw but I cannot stand the taste of steel straws and haven't found a good bamboo one, I'm still on the look. Great tips Lucy, you're such an inspiration!

Clair B. The first time you insert it it allways the hardest, don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t get it right the first time. Make sure also that you have the correct size, one is for people who have had kids and the other for people who have not. And honestly it looks big but once it’s properly situated inside you can’t feel it which I think it kind of cool. You just need to keep working with it, don’t give up/ make it your bitch, follow the directions line by line, and eventually it’ll all work out. Ps don’t worry too much about rotating it on the first couple attempts, that just complicates things way to much at the start. I’ve had the cup now for a few months and I love it. I pop it in the morning, go about my day with no leaks or worrying if it’s going to overflow, and then 12hrs later I pull it out and clean it and then pop it back in there. I love not having to worry about when I should change my tampon or if I have enough tampons or buying tampons. You got this girl.
@anna-michellethivierge60046 жыл бұрын
Clair B. Pps don’t freak out if you’re having trouble removing it, that only makes you tense up more. Just take a deep breath, try to break the seal, and clench your lower muscles like your life depends on it. Eventually it’ll move down low enough where you can grab the lover portion.

If you live in the US and don't have your electricity coming from a renewable source, try looking up on your electric company's website or contact them asking about it. I was really excited to find out that I could opt into a wind program for my electricity. Besides the work of finding the sign up we get charged a couple extra dollars a month here but I find it is really really worth it. Also not all prepackaged tea bags are full of plastic. Some are compostable and say so on the box. I love tea and buy a good amount of loose leaf but because I have issues with caffeine I can only have small amounts of a lot of kinds. I tried using little filter buddies in my cups but cleaning them out got too time consuming and I wasn't using them so I still buy single packaged tea.

Lotte Ritude you can make liquid soap by melting bar soap . Tons of videos on KZbin. I am super hygienic and prefer things in pumps

All of which pose risk to our health as well! so we kind of fall into a marketing trap, yes it might be better bc it doesn't have that specific bishpenol in there (BPA) but there could be tons of alternatives in there! so watch out :)

Couple of questions! If you or anyone ever sees this? 1. Why is microfiber bad? 2. What do you use to remove nail polish and other things that would ruin fabric? I have many more...this seems like enough typing for now! Thank you! Adore this topic!
@Loepsie6 жыл бұрын
1. Whenever you wash or use microfiber, tiny plastic particles fall off. They're too small to be filtered out in the water system so they end up in the ocean where animals ingest them, thus getting plastic into the food cycle. It's bad for everybody. TLDR: they contribute to plastic soup in a nasty way. 2. For nailpolish I'll use regular single use cotton rounds.

Lauren Fry I don't understand that in my country there usually isn't a glass recyling bin around. Just plastic together with metal, and paper separetly. But I think glass waste is the less worrysome, because it is kind of natural. It is like a stone. So obviously animals wouldn't eat it, and it wouldn't disolve in water, so I think glass is better either way than plastic.

I really wish the whole word would adapt these concepts. It is unbelievable how muh waste we get in our kitchen...mostly because everything we buy foodwise comes with plastic packaging...it is making me sad...

About drinking the tap water I am sceptic, do you know it is the water from the kitchen but also from the toilets and bathroom that you are drinking? It has been "filtered" but there are still medicines in it, so......

Do you dribk out of the toilet bowl or something?

All the water from every houses is being filtered after it has been used, and then re-used...

+Noisy Silence I live in Madrid. Here the water comes from the Canal de Isabel II. It is pretty clean and does not have too much chlorine in it. It tastes good. Better than bottled water even. Everybody drinks it. It is not really recycled after that, it tends to be filtered and dumped somewhere. Or used on fields, etc. But I suppose some places have really terrible tap water. It is drinkable (is that even a word or have I invented it) in most of western Europe though (...I think).

Well I live in France and the tap water in the places where I lived has always been terrible, the bottled water is a lot better indeed ;-) I can tell you that the water that we are using is coming back to us after being "filtered"...

I can confirm that. I am part French and have family there. I have only had good French tap water in the Alps.

Also, don't know about the Netherlands but we have this thing here where you pay 25ct more on pretty much every drink you buy, so you return them to the store when they're empty to get the bottles/cans recycled. You get your money back if you do so. I saw a thing about people from other countries who didn't know about it being a thing and I'm just sitting here, wondering why. Didn't even know why we do or have that but now that I do I won't stop annoying my boyfriend about throwing his bottles away.
@Loepsie6 жыл бұрын
We have that in the Netherlands as well, but only on some glass bottles (beer, wine etc.) and 1+ liter soda bottles. Small bottles and cans can't be returned in that way :(

only few US states do that too and when I'm traveling I always feel SO WEIRD when they're aren't recycling bins (I guess if there's no incentive, not a lot of people put bins out) so we end up hoarding bottles in the car to bring home to recycle lol

I decided to try some bamboo toothbrushes about 2-3 months ago and they didn't work for me personally. I'm really scared of getting splinters, but y'know I have to get more comfy with wood stuff anyways so I got over that pretty quickly. My gums got "infected" (not sure what word to use), my "inner lips" (again, dont know the word) would kinda tear open everytime I brushed my teeth and my teeth even started shaking a bit. They're fine now, but I had to go back to normal toothbrushes. I still have 3 unused ones left, I'll definitely give them to somebody even though I couldn't find anyone who wants them yet :'D They were fine, honestly, just not for me. The things I mostly have a hard time with is shampoos and conditioners. I couldn't afford any of the bars from lush yet, and when I could I never found one I could actually use (allergies and stuff) so I'm just gonna keep looking. There's a lot of hairsoaps and stuff on amazon but I feel like that would kinda defeat the purpose if I had to get something shipped.

I bought a biodegradable plastic toothbrush a few weeks back! Found it in my local organic food store, the brand is Berlin Biobrush. Not sure if you'll be able to get your hands on that specific brand where you live but this exists, might be a good alternative for you :D

You can get bamboo ones that have nylon bristles and so when you're done you snap off the head of the brush and compost the handle. So a smaller amount of waste without splintering your gums. Apparently you should run the bamboo brushes under hot water to soften the bristles the first few times too :) (but I use an electric t/b so I have no real world experience with them).

Another thing I'm interested in is waste "free" makeup. Everything comes in plastic and I'd love to know an alternative or some natural ways to make stuff yourself, but I couldn't find anything good yet. I'm gonna stop spamming now, so sorry.
