Your historical hair tutorials are amazing. I particularly love the 18th and 19th century tutorials.

so exiting that you chose this as a topic! i went to school next to Schloss nymphenburg where the gallery of beauty is, and our art teacher always let us draw these ladies in a modern style and told us about their individual stories. The most famous one was Helene Sedlmair, as she was the only one not being from a noble family & Lola Montez, who made everyone believe she was spanish and was quite scandelous. greetings & love from Munich x

As a child I lived near Munich and we went to the Nymphenburg Castle gardens a lot to have a walk there. However, I never was inside the castle and unfortunately never saw the gallery of beauties myself. Munich is definitely worth a visit (not neccessarily because of the "OKtoberfest" - far too crowded for my taste) - so many great art museums and galleries and beautiful churches and castles to be seen there! I believe it is one of the best cities to go and see in Germany.

Very cool idea! And a great authentic look. You're right about the makeup. In the early 19th century women did indeed wear makeup, but it was meant to be very natural as opposed to the obvious over the top makeup of the 18th century. A light flush of rouge on the cheeks was not considered at all improper. It wasn't until the latter half of the 19th century that there was a total disdain for makeup in general (Victorian era morals) but even then most women still tried to stain their lips and cheeks very lightly.

Hi Lucy, just wanted to give a suggestion for your next giveaways, should you hold any. Instead of leaving it completely up to chance, why don't you turn them into a contest and select the winners yourself? The reason I say this is because I entered the Jord watches giveaway, and all I was required to do was follow them on instagram, which made me feel like I didn't even have a chance to prove how much i wanted to win! It would have felt nicer if it was competition of some sort with you as the final judge!

Women and girls have always had a driving instinct to enhance their features to attract men and also to make themselves look more beautiful in general. Back then, Women wore makeup discretely as it was socially unacceptable to be obviously painted, as opposed to today, the painted face is a corporate industry with commercial and ad images everywhere. Corporations rule our society today and dictate what is socially acceptable in the “developed” world. Since the beginning of time, women used whatever was available to enhance themselves. To name a few homemade makeup examples, they are numerous but here are a few examples: Flour for face powder. White Candle wax dripped on teeth to hide the decay on front teeth. Wax layers on face to smooth the appearance of acne scars and pores (southern belles of the US) Fireplace ash, shaved silk and velvet, and dirt, for eye enhancement. Berry and vegetables (beets) for cheek rouge and lip color. Thousands more. Women are creative. Makeup is as old as time.
