Oh Lucy, I am delighted for you. After the unending noise and lack of space, which you bore so gracefully, it is lovely to finally see you and your sewing have such a beautiful, allocated studio. And the safety rail is up!

Lucy, your studio is so beautiful. It looks like a calming and tranquil room. I think your idea of lace curtains will look so charming. I have shear white curtains on the 2 windows in my guest room and when the weather permits, I open the windows and absolutely lovely watching the shears blow when a breeze comes by. You, Robbert and all of your friends that have been helping you with your home have worked so hard and it shows. You have taste and style. Love you loads.

One of my best decisions has been to take over the room above our garage as my studio. I am a multi-crafter so I needed a big table and a lot of storage for a variety of materials. I’m not much of a sewer, but I sew simple things. Never garments. I have a lot of room, but it’s confined by the roof angles. I knew I wanted a slightly silly, colourful, organised chaos, mismatched feel and I wanted the room itself to always be a changing craft project. I LOVE my room! In our kitchen ongoing renovations we repurposed the doors to my studio and they’re the coolest thing ever now.

The studio looks so cosy! Worth the wait and the work, I think! Also, I have two antique singers and I love them! That's all I use now. I'd love to get a working treadle at some point (I had also bought a table, not realising half the treadle was missing....and I cannot find parts...) but I'm happy enough with the hand crank. I've used them since the summer of 2020, and started out on themaking our masks, a couple clothing items, started some quilts, mended jeans (a 66/99 is great with denim, and can even sew leather, BTW!) and made a few different bags. The only downside is you need to get used to controlling the fabric with 1 hand and you need to stop sewing to remove pins/clips when using them, and they obviously don't have a back stitch, so you either need to spin your fabric around to "back stitch" or just skip it, and I usually skip it with no problem, but I find it's a very soothing kind of machine sewing. Medatative, methodical, purposeful sewing. They're so quiet compared to an electric machine, so great to use in the evenings when you want some peaceful sewing time. Also, the bobbin winders are so fun to use! I love how they're crafted! Just oil everything and clean out any fabric dust bunnies/old oil inside and I'm sure it will work fine.

It's just so beautiful! If I had designed it myself, I would have ended up with the same room. It's perfect. My sewing room is in our basement. As you said, it's a luxury to even have a dedicated space, and I'm so, so grateful. But our basement is not finished, and my room has no natural light. I have had to be very creative to make a space that is functional and also pleasing to the eye. But I truly long for the day when I can have a space with an open window, regular walls and nice flooring. Oh, and fewer spiders. 🙂

Congratulations. The studio is amazing. Well done, you. You are going to absolutely fall in love with your hand-crank. During Covid time I got a 1915 hand crank Singer 99K - the level of precision in those machines is mind boggling. Fair warning - the pressure feet is a very deep rabbit hole to fall into (but worth the time - etsy for research, ebay for purchasing). - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi

Seconded. I have a singer 15 treadle reverse feed. I’ve not had my electric machine out since I got it. Sews beautifully. And you can get so close to the edges, I love it. Was very lucky mine is cosmetically challenged but mechanically sound, so I just look after it but don’t baby it. Going by thread meterage I’m in multiple kilometres sewn and I’ve only had it since summer.

I’m wondering if it is just second nature for Czechs to be naturally creative? I have several pieces that my great grandmother embroidered along with numerous tattings that my my grandmother did, along with some of her quilts. They were Moravian. My grandfather was Bohemian, and they were both quite amazing yet strong folk. I am an artist (graphic design by trade), but I also dabble in jewelry making and sewing. It has always been the one thing I am best at… creativity.

Congratulations for making this beautiful space, I'm excited to see your next sewing videos in there ! I have a question which is not a judgement, I hope it won't sound like it. In previous videos, you have often expressed your care for sustainability and interest in sustainable lifestyle : with this in mind, why do you choose to shop at Ikea, which is the furniture equivalent of fast fashion (in terms of mass-production, uniformisation of style worldwide, and quality/durability of items), rather than second-hand or sustainable brands ?
@Loepsie2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The answer is manifold, haha :) The first reason is simply that the interior of my home is deeply important to me and Ikea sells the exact style of furniture that makes me (and my husband) comfortable and content. I really love their style of modern classic furniture, and whenever I've tried to find similar styles secondhand or in other stores it's been very difficult. To put it bluntly, my priorities shift when it comes to interior vs. something more fleeting like fashion or household products, and looks and accessibility become more important. The second reason is that we don't have a car/van available to us that's large enough to transport secondhand furniture, which usually needs to be picked up. We did buy some pieces second hand and getting them home was a challenge (and costly), not something we'd have been able to do for all our furniture. Third reason is I think Ikea sells really good stuff at affordable prices. They have furniture & organization solutions for everything. Sustainably, locally made furniture is unfortunately above our budget at the moment, but as far as "fast furniture" goes, imo Ikea is doing really well in regards to sustainability goals and the materials they use. Lastly, when I buy a piece of furniture, I intend to keep it basically forever, lol. I think I've only ever replaced one piece of furniture (a bed) in my entire adult life, and we still have the wood in our garage to re-use. The biggest problem with any fast consumerism industry is the turnover and how quickly people replace their items with something new, using lots of resources and creating mounds of waste. Keeping my Ikea furniture for 20+ years will ultimately be more sustainable than purchasing a new interior, even from sustainable sources, every time a new trend comes around. Of course keeping sustainably made furniture for 20+ years would be best, but that's simply not something I can afford right now. Hope that makes sense! 😁

Hii, I'm also looking to furniturize a sewing room, and I saw the high black table you got for cutting fabric. Is that also from IKEA? I'm really looking for something similar or with high legs like that but it's definitely hard to find something relatively cheap. I've recently been to IKEA and looked out for something like that, but no luck thusfar. ( I DID see that arts/crafts table with the readjustable legs you got, but they don't go high enough for a cutting table) I figured I'd just ask you where you got your cutting table. I'm also from the Netherlands, btw and a new subscriber :)
