I have a wood splitter identical to this one, It needs the same repairs and engine swap out. My dad bought it sometime in the 80s to split elm.

Looks a lot like are 1980s mtd 20T splitter. I like the protected engine and bigger hyd oil tank. The one we have is about half the size as the engine is mounted up there by the hyd filter. The original b/s engine was a flat head and ran at 3,200ish rpm The replacement runs at the more common 3,600 and heats the oil far faster. But as a trade-off it's a little faster piston speed. A round trip is mabe 2sec faster. . We went to propane, as no ethanol fuel has gone sky high in price.

I have a 40 year old Mini-Split flywheel driven splitter with coil spring return...at least twice as fast as the hydraulics. One horse electric motor and I haven't found anything it wouldn't split. DR now has one almost identical...they must have bought the patent. Their short video of its operation is well worth watching. Congrats on one year. Thanks for the great videos.

I put one of the import 6.5 HP 212cc engines on my edger. Only $99 on sale. It replaced a B&S 3 HP engine that was original. To say it has plenty of power is an understatement. I have the baddest edger in the neighborhood. Been on there for about 4 years now and runs great. Great video!

That's very kind of you to fix the splitter for your neighbor, what a guy! Good thinking on the union for the splitter and having it bearing onto the wedge itself than on the bolt, and I'm certain you would have designed it that way originally if you'd drawn the plans. All around great video, thanks for sharing...Aloha, Chuck

Hi Randy My neighbor had a duerr log splitter just like yours, I had borrowed it and it worked great. I had set it up with the beam in the vertical position and when I went to lay it back down my finger got pinched between the beam and the bracket it sets in when laying down. Just thought I would warn you so it does not happen to you as well. I was lucky because I had on gloves so I did not loose my finger. They changed the design on the newer ones I believe to prevent the problem. I bought the newer version and I added a shelf I made that mounts under the beam and sets level with the top of the beam. When I split a good size piece in half I can roll 1/2 onto the shelf while I am splitting the other half. It saves your back not having to bend over to pick it up again. John F

imystery man Thank you John for watching. It is a good log splitter, it is my neighbors and he has had it for over 30 yrs. It just needed a bit of care. He uses it in the vert. position. On Hortz. splitter the shelf works great, have used several like that. my splitter attaches to my tractor on the 3 point and uses the hyd. of the tractor and is vert. Great splitter. Thanks, Randy

I saw you yank the handle to start the powerhouse engine. But earlier I saw an electric starter on the back side of the engine. Am I right? I did not see a battery anywhere, but I did see a set of keys. Thanks for a response. Nice Job on the change-out and upgrade. Even the street L change, was a good one.

@@RRINTHESHOP okay you explained it is Electric start and controls at 4:28. You state all you gotta do is add a battery. That is amazing. I am rebuilding old chainsaws I own and weed eaters, it's incredible how cheap one can get the Chinese aftermarket parts and even complete engines. You said this was from NorthernTool. On my log splitter is a WEN aftermarket MTD machine, but it is a 212cc 6.5 hp recoil start Honda Clone. HF sells them for 99$.

My vertical 7hp ohv Briggs went out on my 27 ton Troy Bilt. Can I put a more affordable new horizontal shaft engine on to replace? What would I need to do, match up the shaft size and make sure the pump hoses reach? Thanks, Dave.

Randy, nice repair. I love to keep good old machinery working. Bought a Northern 30T splitter last fall and split several cords of eucaliptus that the park service was removing as non-native. Haven't had much opertunity to burn it as it's been unusually warm the last few winters here in the Santa Monica Mountains. I noticed that the older splitters and the latest ones have a filter on the return line. Mine does not. Any thoughts on adding one? Should be an easy job. Randy D
@RRINTHESHOP
@RRINTHESHOP 9 жыл бұрын
R G DEGREGORI Thank you. The return filter and the suction strainer are both to protect the pump from dirt. The return filter helps catch the dirt before it gets to the reservoir and pump. The return filter is also a much finer 10 micron usually. Where the pump strainer is quite a bit larger and is in the reservoir, much more difficult to get to. If you use a replaceable return filter you will probably never have to clean the suction strainer. I am a pro return filters. It does not take much dirt to wear out a pump. Thanks Randy

If you want electric start, your neighbor get a one yo. used engine for $150 and you get the new one.... Now probably too late. :-( For a price those imports are great replacement alternatives, just that blue don't go great with red. About the bolt on the ram, it would be easy to make a hardened and tempered bushing with let's say 1045 and get the bolt true it, no stress on the bolt... ;-) Pierre

What size engine is a good size ?i have one an don't know why I have problems at times splitting logs with knots in them please help .
@RRINTHESHOP
@RRINTHESHOP 8 жыл бұрын
Engine size depends on the the HP requirements of the hydraulic pump. This one was 6 hp. Knots are tough for splitting. When splitting tough pieces do not engage the entire wedge into the wood. This will increase the splitting force on the wood.
