As someone who's only heard one other song from this play , I think it's kind of funny the fact that poseidon's not Pissed off at the fact his son was hurt. But the fact that his son wasn't killed, or at least that's what the words implied to me
@arynoob139211 ай бұрын
he's pissed cause he gave mercy to poseidons son but still blinded him. and then he gave the son his name, adress and credintials so posiedon could go track him so posiedons pissed that because of his actions he has put all these peoples lives in danger
@Lena-fc9ce11 ай бұрын
its kind of worse that odysseus left polyphemus alive. by maiming him he has made him (in the eyes of the ancient greeks) a defenseless laughingstock among the cyclopes. it also kind of implies polyphemus is not enough of a threat to warrant being killed, and should instead live with the shame of having been bested by some mortal. had odysseus just killed him it would be a fairly simple case of self defense, two warriors "nobly" duking it out until one of them loses. and like arynoob1392 said, odysseus even left his details with polyphemus, basically forcing poseidon's hand: poseidon knows exactly who hurt, but refused to kill, his son, so honour *demands* he kill odysseus, and his men for good measure. in greek mythology honour and certain social conventions matter a lot, which can seem really weird to our modern sense of ethics but made sense to the culture these stories came from.
@Morylo-swk11 ай бұрын
No, not at all - Poseidon absolutely WASN'T angry because Odysseus didn't killed his son. But I see that people have already explained it in the comments
@chelseagibson-douglas562811 ай бұрын
It was actually cruler to blind(severally hurt) the cyclops also odysseus didn't actually apologise he just gave his own justification about hurting polyphemus (probably spelt wrong)
@Julia-zv8tv11 ай бұрын
I find it interesting how the composer modernized some parts of the story to match modern sensibilities, but not others, and I think this is one of those situations. By ancient Greek standards, what Odysseus did to Polyphemus really crossed a line because he went out of his way to HUMILIATE him. Killing someone who threatens to kill you is totally within the bounds of normal honorable Greek behavior, but blinding someone (thus rendering them incapable of taking care of themselves), stealing all of their things (thus further rendering them dependent on others), and then telling them your name and address to demonstrate how little you think of them and their ability to avenge themselves is just all kinds of cruel and insulting in a way that really isn't on by Greek standards. Plus, by extension, Odysseus also insulted all of Polyphemus' relatives, because the implication is that he believes none of them are ready or able to avenge him either. Which is NOT what you want to say to someone with an Olympian father. In Ancient Greek culture, especially in these heroic stories, being humiliated was considered much worse than being killed in normal violent confrontation, and Odysseus basically waved a big fat middle finger at Poseidon with his actions.

OH MY GODS This sounds like the Sea Nymphs are singing a homage to their king. Apollo approved!
@Sorain19 ай бұрын
I'm picturing this being a performance by the Nymphs years later, possibly as a subtle warning to guests of Poseidon to not anger him.
@RavenSutcliffe11 ай бұрын
I LOVE how you go super delicate and melodic in your upper range with "the cyclops you made blind... Is mine" because it both encapsulates the love Poseidon has for the son in question and gives off a huge "calm before the storm" vibe, like "let me show you how pretty I can make things before I make them REALLY UGLY for you" The enunciation in "but noooo" too, that almost mean girl-esque bitchiness to emphasize how Poseidon's just toying with Odysseus like a cat toys with its food. There's so many little details and I 100% love this!! This is my favorite song in the whole saga and one of my top 3 favorites in all of Epic and you definitely did it justice ETA: omggg and that whispered "die" and going back to the melodic mocking with "43 left under your command"??? Speechless
@LoganneDigmaVO11 ай бұрын
Hey!! Oh my gosh thank you so much for commenting on all of those smaller details! It seriously means a lot that someone noticed them and took the time to mention it! Switching up the octave on those parts was meant to be exactly as you described-a sense of mocking + calm before the storm! Also a sense of nonchalant-ness with the final “43 left under your command”!!! Thank you so much for the kind words!

@selonianth6 ай бұрын
@@juliaboskamp9666 not really. Not on Poseidon's part anyway. Zeus has I think done some shit when he's told no... aside from potentially forcing the matter. Poseidon? Nah, he is actually roughly in the middle of the temperment spectrum of the Olympians. One end being shit like Hera and the other being Hades. He's definitely piss-offable, he's had a few incidents but aside from like the contest of Athens which was either understandable frustration unleashed... less than kindly or petty frustration (depending on which version of the story we're talking about, the saltwater spring is more common but there's others where he created the Horse *for* Athens)... they're all like... valid things to be pissed about. This story, one of his lovers is murdered by her father I think and he goes ham on that, there's the minotaur but he honestly doesn't do enough there for me to feel like he was pissed off, more just... teaching the guy a lesson. He *is* mostly chill... but he's just like the sea itself, ignore the warning signs at your own peril.

I always found it funny in this song that Poseidon isn't mad that his son wasn't killed, but instead of the fact his son wasn't killed. In Greek Mythology, it's kinda the "Norm" to Kill someone after beating them in a battle, leaving them crippled and alive is considered humiliation. Now funnily enough, if Odysseus never revealed his name, Poseidon wouldn't have gone for him simply because he wouldn't know who to track down. Odysseus could of easily escaped this fade if he kept he mouth shut. Not only is sparing the cyclops a form of humiliation, but this is disrespect towards Poseidon himself. You got the power to kill a Baby, but not the Cyclops that wanted y'all squadron dead?

for anyone curious about the likes of "what have you done?" and "only 43 men left" for context Odysseus had 12 ships with roughly 50 people on each. until Poseidon came in that is. he distoried 11 of his 12 ships and killed on the LOW end of 500 men. and in this song i intererate this is Posidon specifically sparing Odysseus's ship to give him a idea of how reuthlessness is a mercy on ourselves. being how if he had killed the cyclops posidon would never have found out but maybe also to say : you blinded my son for the rest of his days. it would have been a mercy had you killed him like me killing you now to spare you the guilt of all there lives where on your hands"
