Logic Pro X - Exploring Retro Synth

Retro Synth can sound GREAT, if you work at it a bit. TBH it has an extremely authentic VA section, quite a bit better IMO than many softsynths I’ve payed well over $150 for.

Hope anyone can help me to understand this: In the OSCILLATOR part of the Retro Synth there is the "shape modulation" knob. I understand that this knob controls the amount of LFO modulation that we want. So, If we have this knob to control the LFO amount, why do we have another one in the filter section?

Pedrenso The LFO in the oscillator section is to modulate the frequency of the oscillator. The LFO in the filter section will modulate the filter cutoff - they are two different LFOs. Hope that helps!

I'm really new to this and I'm not sure how to make any sounds with these synths. Do I need an MIDI controller/keyboard of some sort? Is that how people play sounds with synths? :(

Couple options: If you're using Logic Pro X you can just show the piano roll (tap "E" on your keyboard) and use your cursor to click each key. Or there's a "musical keyboard" (tap command + "K") you can use, but that's a little awkward. Other than that, yeah, getting a midi controller is a great idea. Makes the process of testing sounds much quicker. I use an old M-Audio O-Zone (USB midi colntroller that interfaces with Logic Pro), but you can get something similar for under $100 (link this one amzn.com/B002VYJDYW) on Amazon. Best of luck!
