You explained the steps well, but for those, including myself, still foggy on what is happening, you never said the word "bass" very much when you explained what was being affected (the compression's effect on the bass is pretty subtle here.) Correct me if I'm wrong: two things are being reduced, but only the bass gain reduction is audible. The high-end side-chain triggering power of the drums on the bass was being reduced by the low-pass filtering (leaving mostly just the kick to trigger), not the high-end sound of the drums themselves.
